THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPIRITUAL GIFTS, TALENTS, AND TRAINING
There is a relationship between spiritual gifts, talents, and training for leadership. It is imperative to know what each one means and that will give one a better understanding of how the 3 relate to each other. Leadership is very demanding and many leaders have not been properly trained for the position they occupy. Because Christians have been put into a position without training, many people lead others without having any hands-on knowledge. The best type of leadership is servant leadership.

On the other hand, in the book, Spiritual Leadership, Oswald Sanders talks about Christians having reservation to aspire to leadership. Many Christians are not convinced that it is biblical sound to desire a leadership role in the church. They questioned whether their ambitions are noble or honorable. An ambition that is centered on God is noble but those that uplift one’s own desire should be questioned. Although Sanders talks about ambition, he describes the shortage of leader in the church. He speaks about Christian’s talents and how it is imperative for them to glorify God with their talents. Spiritual leaders are regarded as gifted/talented people; however, the talents do not make them leaders. The talents may accent their leadership but God is the one that makes spiritual leaders. God is the focal point for spiritual gifts, talents, and training for leadership. The disciples were trained by Jesus. He did not take disciples into a classroom but He taught by examples.9 Many times the disciples were put in situations by Jesus to help them learn on-the-job. The Church as a whole debates many concepts that are in the Bible, in both theology and in practice. One of these debates surrounds the gifts that are spoken of in the Bible. In one corner are those who believe that charismatic gifts are alive and well in the church today. The Continuationist view believes that the gifts have continued on through Biblical times and are still relevant for today. In the other corner are those who believe that particular gifts have ceased to be used in the modern church and that they were only given for a particular reason in Biblical times. This view is called the Cessationist. Today each view, and other views in between, and the practice of the gifts in the current culture will be examined for truth, validity, and application by searching through each view and holding fast to the scripture as the final word of authority.

In all the general aspects of this particular term one would conclude that, “Leadership” embodies different characteristics, goals, rules, and standards for different positions in society. In the text, Great Leader, Great Teacher: Recovering the Biblical Vision for Leaders, author Gary Bredfeldt states, “The nature of leadership differs from situation to situation. What is required of a leader on the battlefield is quite different from what is required on the ball field or mission field. Leadership is not a one-size-fits-all formula.” This bold statement makes minds take a deeper look at the general definition of leadership and how each individual can theoretically determine what that is for their lives. In addition, from a Christian Worldview perspective what attributes in which the Scripture provides on servitude can be applicable and relevant to becoming a successful leader.

In my opinion Christian and secular leadership vary greatly. Although they share the same basic principles of what a leader should be, Christian leaders take leadership a step further. First off, Christian leaders are called to lead by Him. This means He has chosen these individuals as His people to take on the responsibility of leading in a Christian manner. Christian leaders lead in a way that exemplifies Christ. They are caring, passionate, and invested in the organization in a way that differs from a secular leader. Some companies or organizations treat there employees poorly and only value them for what they can do for the company. On the other hand an organization lead by a Christian cares about the individual
