The patient is a 27 year old male who came in the hospital with pain and swelling in his left ankle. He had said he jumped off a porch and landed on a root. A three view ankle x-ray was ordered. The doctor found that there was an oblique spiral fracture of the distal one third diaphysis of the tibia. There is approximately 1 centimeter of lateral displacement of the distal fracture fragment with respect to the proximal fragment. Spiral fracture is caused by a twisting force. The result is a spiral-shaped fracture line above the bone, like a staircase. Depending on how much force causes the fracture, spiral fractures can be displaced or stable. A displaced fracture is when the broken ends of the bone are separated. Stable fractures happen when
The Hillside Strangler was the name given to two killers who strangled and killed their victims, dumping their bodies in the hills of Los Angeles. These killings took place during October 1977 and February 1978 involving ten young women ranging from ages 12 to 28. With over one hundred law enforcement task force members working tirelessly to solve this case, the fear with in the community was still undeniable. It wasn’t long before the clues would come in one by one, to help detectives solve this heinous crime. Once two sets of DNA was revele on the crime scenes, police realized they had not just one but two killers. These two killers were cousins Kenneth Alessio Bianchi and Angelo Anthony Buono.
Ankle sprains have three degrees of injury ranging from 1-3. The level of the ankle sprain is determined by the amount that the ligament is torn or stretched. A grade one sprain is categorized as a slight stretching and damage to the fibers of the ligament. A grade 2 sprain is characterized as partial tearing of the ligament and abnormal laxity of the ankle. A grade 3 sprain is characterized by complete tear of the ligament if it can be pushed or pulled in certain movements there is gross instability. The movements of the ankle are abduction, adduction, plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, and inversion, eversion. The ligaments of the ankle hold the ankle bones and joint into position. These ligaments protect the ankle joint from abnormal movements such as twisting, turning, and rolling of the foot.
Intra articular fractures of calcaneus occurs following eccentric loading of the talus on the calcaneus.(fig 5.1) The severity, type and location of fracture are determined by the position of the foot, the direction and magnitude of applied force and quality of bone 49.
The anatomy of the knee contains the femur, tibia and the patella. There are four main ligaments within the knee. Those ligaments are called medial collateral (mcl), lateral collateral (lcl), anterior cruciate (acl) and posterior cruciate (pcl). The anterior cruciate ligament (acl) is in the middle of the knee and prevents the shin from sliding. An anterior cruciate ligament tear is the most common harmed ligament, undergoing an estimate of 200,000 happenings yearly. Typically individuals who play sports such as football, basketball, skiing or soccer experience this injury.

In the CNN article “Shazier injury, dirty hits cast dark shadow over steelers MNF win vs Bengals” Sean Tomlinson explains how Ryan Shazier’s injury and JuJu Smith-Schuster’s hit impacted the monday night football game between the Bengals and the Steelers. Shazier was injured on a pass play he was carted off by the medical team and did not play the rest of the game. Late into the game JuJu Smith-Schuster made a crackback block on Vontaze Burfict which some sports analysts viewed as a dirty hit.
The patients chart was reviewed and a history of fractures was brought to the attention of the physician. Her fracture list includes her right clavicle, right humorous, three ribs, multiple finger and toe fractures, the left femur, and her right distal fibula. Many different diagnoses have included accident trauma, child abuse, and many bone disorders including OI. This disease effects on average one child in every 20,000 to 60,000 births each year. Suspected abuse where there is none present can lead to some damaging outcomes for all included and involved. Children with OI and their families can be protected in situations like these, and they are offered the best available
A stress fracture may be one of the most provoking injuries a runner can develop. Runners just always want to improve their personal best time and challenge themselves on how far they can run. But runners never pay attention to what they can do to their feet in the long term. This fracture usually occurs after a sudden increase in activity, and result from overuse. As a runner’s distance increases or intensity of the run, adjustment of the muscles may occur rapidly than bones. The human foot has five metatarsal bones. The big toe is labeled number one; the little toe is number five. Metatarsal stress fractures happen typically in numbers two, three, and four bones enduring the greatest shock when the foot strikes the ground. This becomes imbalance and accommodated when the exercise routine is advance gradually. When muscular contractions are rapid in can overcome the re-modeling bony architecture, and the bone cannot take any more stress, the crack occurs and metatarsal stress fracture develops.
Stable fracture. This includes a single fracture line through one bone, with no injury to ankle ligaments. A fracture of the talus that does not have any movement of the bone on either side of the fracture line (displacement)
Sweat. Blood. Tears. Fruit punch Gatorade. Many people all around the world play sports whether it is Football, Baseball, Tennis, Swimming, Wrestling or Track. People have come together and played sports since the begging of time; the Olympics unites people all over the world. However, once in a while shocking and sometimes fatal injuries can occur. Although sports teams prior to sports medicine have employed team physicians for numerous years, the field of sports medicine did not arise until about the 20th century. The first textbook on the subject of sports medicine was published in 1910 to help athletes avoid fatal injuries. Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness, treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. There is danger in almost any sport and athlete participated in; sports have caused many life altering injuries and sometimes even death. Due to sports medicine becoming a new and growing health care profession, many injures have went undocumented. The common athletic trainer may deal with minor cuts and bruises, muscle cramps, ACL sprains, ankle sprains, shin splints and maybe even a broken bone; but once in a while they can experience extreme injures. There has been various outrageous and gruesome injuries throughout sports medicine history.
Fibular fractures may be complete or incomplete fractures. Fibula fractures may occur anywhere along the bone. The fracture we are trying to fixate is a complete fracture. Fractures occur when a force is placed on the bone that is greater than it can withstand, and when a fracture does occur in the fibula, it’s usually at the same time as the tibia. When only the fibula fractures, it is usually because of a direct blow to the side of the leg or an extreme sideways bend at the ankle or knee. Some other common causes of fibular fracture include, direct hit from doing contact sports such as hockey or lacrosse, stress fracture; weakening of the bone from repeated stress, or indirect injury, caused by twisting, turning quickly, or violent muscle contraction. Tripping, falling or impact during an accident are also major causes of fibular
Spinal fusion stabilizes the spinal vertebra by fusing the disk spaces between the vertebra. The purpose of Lumbar fusion surgery is designed to help create solid bone between the adjoining vertebra. Classically Autograft bone has been used for fusion. This case study demonstrates the successful use of a synthetic bone graft called Signafuse. Signafuse is a moldable bone graft comprising a proprietary combination of patented bioactive glass particles and biphasic mineral granules suspended in a patented resorbable polymer carrier.
The nerves are raging, mainly in his stomach as the butterflies flutter till no end. "Is everything ok? Will everything go as planned?" He couldn't stop thinking about what might happen. Images were racing wild as he thought about his teammates going to battle without him. He couldn't comprehend why he had to let them handle it on their own. He has played with them since they were in eighth grade, and when they need him the most, all he can do is sit and cheer. He hates this feeling of helplessness, but at the same time he knows he has to do what little he can do, well.
At the beginning of my sophomore year, I was experiencing pain in my right ankle, and the pain was caused from dance. The doctor found an extra bone in my foot and diagnosed me with ankle impingement. Ankle impingement is defined as “when either soft or bony tissues are compressed within the ankle joint at the extreme end of a motion, such as pointing the foot sharply downward” (APTA), and the compression is caused from the extra bone. The extra bone is usually caused from a small part of a bone chipping off the actual bone because of a previous injury, such as twisting or rolling an ankle. Ankle impingement is more common in dancers because we are constantly pointing our foot sharply downward. I also experienced and still do experience pain
I choose the above mentioned physical therapy treatment diagnosis due to patient presenting with muscle weakness with manual muscle testing, reported pain during the evaluation on VAS (visual analog scale) numerical pain scale , impaired static and dynamic standing balance measured with functional balance grades (O’Sullivan, & Schmitz, 2007, p. 254). Medical diagnosis of displaced trimalleolar fracture of right lower leg, subsequent encounter for closed fracture with routine healing (S82.851D) was picked from hospital medical records and added to the evaluation. Finally, after the evaluation was completed it was time to set the goals. The patient, herself expressed during the evaluation that she should be at least able to get around in the house in the wheelchair and with front wheeled walker, to be independent with basic functional mobility as she will be NWB for almost 8 weeks.
