Prejudice is a word that is used to describe people who categorize others into groups based on their skin color, race, or religion. I am reading a book in my English class. In this book, there are many misunderstandings and stereotypes, but one of the things in it is prejudice. There are many examples of prejudice in the book that relate to how people use it in our society. Prejudice is something that everyone has and can never get rid of it. In the book called, To Kill A Mockingbird, which is the book I am reading, prejudice is all around and you have to deal with it or just not be prejudiced to anyone so they won’t say anything to you. No matter what you do, there will always be someone who is prejudice and won’t stop. The book also shows …show more content…
it through a child’s point-of-view to show that a child can also understand what prejudice is and how to use it. It also shows how much of it, a child can see during their childhood. To really get a good look at how prejudice is spread throughout the world, we must see it in action in a fictional/realistic world. In this case, we will be using the novel in order to see that prejudice is in fact a bad thing that people have. The quote from the novel to explain this is, “ ‘Did you pay a bushel of potatoes for him?’ I asked, but Atticus shook his head at me.This is prejudice, but you can also say that it falls under the category of stereotype. This is because the main character/narrator, Scout, was listening to a conversation with Walter Cunningham, a poor farm boy who helps his family on the farm, and her father, a lawyer, were having about crops. Since Walter’s family was poor, they couldn’t repay what was given to them in cash so they repaid them in any way they could like giving them carrots or in this case, potatoes. The quote represented prejudice because Scout had categorized him under the section of people who are poor and can’t pay anything back. Although it was a joke she had said, it was a rude joke that presented prejudice. This is very familiar to the real world because this can actually happen. When someone is too poor or owes someone else, they can’t repay you as fast as you would want them to or they would pay you in something else like a sandwich or in this case, potatoes. There are other ways to tell if someone is being prejudice. One quote is, ”Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop.” Scout had beat up or pushed Walter’s face in the dirt because he was poor. Now him being poor was not the real reason Scout had beat him up. It was mainly because she had to explain to her teacher that he was poor and could not pay back a quarter she was going to loan him. The teacher got mad and made Scout stand in the corner at the back of the class. This meant that because she stood up for someone who is poor, she got punished for it and blamed Walter. Walter had no choice in this. It was not his fault he’s poor. In real life this happens as well. Some people get mad at others because they are poor or they were close to the situation and they get punished for it. Some ways of finding prejudice are easier than others.
Another quote from the book is, “but they were Haverfords, in Maycomb County a name synonymous with jackass.” This shows prejudice because the rest of their family were jerks so people just assumed they were jerks as well. With the fact that they stole a horse and were sent to court, they might have been known to be jerks, but the whole County already knew they would be jerks. Just because their last name is a name from a generation of jerks, doesn’t mean they would turn out to be that way. This happens in real life as well. If you have a specific last name, people would treat you depending on what it is. For example, if you were a relative of King Louis XVI, a king famous for not knowing how to rule and making France bankrupt, you would not be trusted with anything like money or food. It would be a sad time for you and your future/present family. There are other ways that this can happen. Although you might be a very nice or smart person, that doesn’t mean people are going to take you the right way. You could go to high school for the very first time and you have to sit in the front next to the teacher's desk while everyone else gets to pick their own seats. Now you might be really nice and smart, but since your older brother or sister went to that same school and class and the same teacher and they were a trouble maker or they never did their work, the teacher automatically thinks you will be bad as
well. So all in all, the Haverfords were called jerks because of their last name, Scout beat Walter because he is poor, and Scout made a joke about Walter not being able to repay debts. Many people are showing prejudice, even if they don’t know they are showing it. The fact that it shows it in the book is a type of resemblance to how it is shown in real life. No one knows why people do it, but many do. In real life, you see people all the time saying things to black people and to Asians. Mexicans and Americans also get comments that are very rude. Prejudice is a virus that has infected everyone, it can be treated to the lower temptation of making fun of others, but can never be cured.
Prejudice is an issue that cannot be easily avoided in today's society. It has and always will have a huge impact on the discrimination that some people face based on religion, appearance, background, mental/physical disabilities and etc.
Prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or feeling, formed beforehand (e.g., before even meeting a person) based on non-personal characteristics (e.g., skin color, religious, gender). One form of prejudice is racism. Racism is negative attitudes and values held by people about other people based on their race. It is this attitude which causes one to discriminate against another. Discrimination is treating people unfavorably on the basis of race, color or sex. Prejudice and discrimination were prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s. This era was a time of hatred, a time of violence, a time when black people were colonized by the white colonizer, and it was a time of white-on-black racial violence. Because of this hatred, the whites discriminated against the blacks.
Prejudice is where you judge someone without knowing who the person is, or what they are like. In Maycomb some people were prejudiced especially towards black people who were called niggas, negroes. Maycomb was prejudiced against Boo Radley because he was different. He never went outside during the day, but people knew he went out at night. Bob Ewell was prejudiced against Atticus because he was defending a negro, also because Atticus had power and Bob Ewell didn’t.
In the book West Side Story by Arthur Laurents there were many prejudices. Prejudice is a favoring or dislike of something without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge. There were prejudices in West Side Story that had to do with the types of people, their races and sex. Sometimes prejudice can be in small doses and can be meaningless, other times prejudice can be very serious and cause death.
Jonathan Rauch’s essay “In Defense of Prejudice” essay immediately stood out to me for a few reasons. As a black Muslim woman living in America, I’ve dealt with my fair share of prejudice and for that I’ve always had a negative view towards it. Also, I found the title to be striking and unconventional which automatically drew me towards it. In “In Defense of Prejudice”, Rauch makes it clear that while he is not in favor of prejudice, he is in favor of allowing people to express their prejudice as openly and freely as they choose to. He takes a somewhat controversial stance with his belief that banning hate speech actually goes against freedom of speech and that eradicating prejudice should not be the goal of Americans, but to use prejudice
Growing up in a prejudiced environment can cause individuals to develop biased views in regard to both gender and class. This is true in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, where such prejudices are prevalent in the way of life of 1930s Maycomb, Alabama. The novel is centered around the trial of a black man who is accused of raping a white woman. The narrator, a young girl named Scout, is able to get a close up view of the trial because her father is defending Tom Robinson, the defendant. The aura of the town divided by the trial reveals certain people's’ prejudices to Scout, giving her a better perspective of her world. Throughout the story, Aunt Alexandra’s behaviors indirectly teach Scout that prejudice is a disease with deep and far reaching roots.
Prejudice meaning pre-judging someone and having an unwarranted bias occurs often in today’s society and has been around since the beginning of time. Prejudice can effect people’s decisions and have an unfair impact on society. The text ‘To kill a mocking-bird’ written by Harper Lee and the movie ‘Philadelphia’ directed by Jonathon Demme explore this idea thoroughly.
The word prejudice is derived from the Latin word " praejudicium" and refers to prejudging without any factual evidence. Being prejudiced usually means having preconceived beliefs about groups of people or cultural practices. Discrimination is the "differential and unequal treatment of other groups of people, usually along racial, religious or ethnic lines." The distinction is that prejudice then refers to people's attitudes and beliefs, and discrimination to their overt behavior directed at another group. (Parrillo 76)
Two Ways to Reduce Prejudice Two ways in which prejudice can be reduced are Equal status contact and the pursuit of common goals. Deutsch and Collins (1951) carried out an early study of equal status contact. They compared two kinds of housing projects, one of which was thoroughly integrated with blacks and whites who were assigned houses regardless of their race, and the other was segregated. The residents of both housing projects were intensively interviewed and it was found that both casual and neighbourly contact were greater in the integrated housing with less prejudice among whites towards blacks.
While prejudice and discrimination are closely related, the terms are not interchangeable. Prejudice is a negative attitude, feelings, thoughts or beliefs toward an entire category of people. There are two important factors that are present in the definition of prejudice, and they are attitude and entire category (Schaefer 35).
Prejudice is a biased thinking, it refers to thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and feelings that someone holds about a group of people. Prejudice is a prejudgment that is not based from actual experience. Racism is a type of prejudice that is used to justify that one race is superior to other races. There are three levels of prejudice that exist, cognitive, emotional and action orientation. Cognitive level of...
From the reading I learned prejudice is when a person attaches negative emotion to a certain group of people that is not based on facts. Prejudice has two levels cognitive or affective where the cognitive is thinking and feeling prejudice while affecting is actually doing prejudice actions. Discrimination is also discussed in chapter one. Discrimination is unequal behavior or treatment of a person based on them being a member of a group. An example of discrimination would be not getting selected for a job because you are African
Prejudice and discrimination have both been prevalent throughout human history. Prejudice deals with the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions that are held by others of one group against those of another. Discrimination on the other hand refers to the behaviors directed against another group. Prejudiced individuals have preconceived beliefs about groups of people or cultural practices. There are both positive and negative forms of prejudice, however, the negative form of prejudice leads to discrimination. Individuals that practice discrimination do so to protect opportunities for themselves, by denying access to those whom they believe do not deserve the same treatment as everyone else. An example of discrimination based on prejudice involves the Jews. “Biased sentiments and negative stereotypes of Jews have been a part of Western tradition for centuries and, in fact, have been stronger and more vicious in Europe than in the United States. For nearly two millennia, European Jews have been chastised and persecuted as the “killers of Christ” and stereotyped as materialistic moneylenders and crafty business owners (Healey, p.65). The prejudice against these groups led to the discrimination against them.
Ignorance is a huge problem, it is one of the biggest factors responsible for issues such as racism and sexism. Luckily, ignorance, generally speaking, is a relatively easy issue to fix. The obvious answer here would be more education, but this is not necessarily the case. In order to eliminate much of the racism, sexism, and other forms of prejudice that arise due to ignorance, it is necessary to look at education from another perspective: one that encourages togetherness and development alongside people of all races and genders. One quote by Grace Boggs book The Next American Revolution summarizes the issue perfectly. “Just imagine what our neighborhoods would be like if, instead of keeping our children isolated in classrooms for twelve years and more, we engaged them in community-building activities with the same audacity with which the civil rights movement engaged them in desegregation activities fifty years ago! ...Our children will be absorbing naturally and normally the values of social responsibility and cooperation at the same time that they are being inspired to learn the skills and acquire the information necessary to solve real problems” (Boggs 158). So, the main point here is that prejudice, against all sexes, genders, and creeds, can be eliminated via education that encourages cooperation with the largest variety of people. In order to understand this concept, it is necessary to look at it from a few different perspectives to analyze its viability in modern society.
Prejudice can be defined as the judgement of a group or an individual based mainly on group association. Prejudice is not necessarily negative. Ethnocentrism is an example of positive prejudice towards one’s in-group. Discrimination can be defined as the negative or positive behaviours towards individuals based on their group association. Discrimination may be obvious or subtle, either way both can be damaging. Although discrimination and prejudice often go hand in hand, there is a difference between the two. Prejudice is just the negative or positive view of others, whereas discrimination is putting prejudice into action. An example of prejudice would be that of ordinary racist remarks whilst an example of discrimination would be the execution of the caste system in India. This question assumes that prejudice is common in this world, and that this problem needs to be solved.
