Prejudice is where you judge someone without knowing who the person is, or what they are like. In Maycomb some people were prejudiced especially towards black people who were called niggas, negroes. Maycomb was prejudiced against Boo Radley because he was different. He never went outside during the day but people knew he went out at night. Bob Ewell was prejudiced against Atticus because he was defending a negro also because Atticus had power and Bob Ewell didn’t. Mrs Dubois was prejudiced towards children. She was very nasty to children especially to Jem. The only people we know who were not prejudiced were Boo Radley, Atticus Finch and maybe Calpurnia. The Ewell family were particularly prejudiced and Bob Ewell was very bad. For example Bob
Harper Lee wrote, “when Atticus turned away from Mayella he looked like his stomach hurt.” during the trial. (chapter 18) People tried to force their way into prison and kill Tom Robinson. A group of white men including Mr Cunningham really wanted him killed as the town believed the white family’. They chose the Ewells over Tom Robinson because he is black. There were two churches in Maycomb, one for the blacks and one for the whites. This is another example of racism. They also had separate seating arrangements in the courthouse for white and black
They had seating arrangements too where the white sat downstairs and the black people sat upstairs which was not as nice, which makes the courtroom prejudiced.
Before the trial started the Jury and the Judge presumed that Tom Robinson was guilty.
Atticus had enough evidence to prove to the Jury that Tom’s right arm did not work and that would mean that Tom could not have pulled Mayella to the ground and bruised her as the policeman described. The crowd was surprised but the Jury and the Judge did not believe Atticus’s evidence. They were prejudiced and if Atticus came up with the best possible explanation the Judge still believed the Ewell family and they did not come up with a reasonable explanation about Tom. “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash” (Atticus) chapter 23. Prejudice hurts people who are black and people who were different and young
