In his influential and informative speech “How to Speak So That People Want to Listen”, Julian Treasure describes how to speak powerfully so that other people can be attentive to the speaker. In his speech, Julian points out 7 habits which can negatively impact any speech. These 7 habits are mentioned below:
Gossip – Gossiping is “Speaking ill of somebody who's not present.” Talking unnecessarily about people can damage the credibility of the speaker.
Judging – Judging is forming an opinion about a person. If a person is cautious about being judged, he cannot concentrate to listen to others.
Negativity – Negativity refers to pessimism. A pessimist cannot have an effective and enthusiastic listener.

L – Love – becoming well-wisher of people.
Additionally, the speaker suggests to maximize the use of the vocal cords. The first is register, which is to associate depth with power and the authority with the voice. The second is timbre, which is to associate warmth in your tone. Next is the association of pattern of stress and intonation in voice – which is known as prosody. The fourth is pace, which is the adjustment of the speed of speech according to the situation. For example, excitement can be expressed by speaking quickly and speaking slow means to emphasize the speech. Silence is also necessary while speaking. Next is pitch which is the degree of lowness and highness of a tone. For example, high pitch refers anger and quickness. Whereas, low pitch refers softness. Last is volume which the loudness of a sound.
Moreover, he shows six vocal warm-up exercises to be done before any important speech. These are deep breathing, changing pitch, moving lips and tongue. Wright is an article that focuses on the idea of promoting English Language Learners (ELL) oral-language skills in the classroom instruction time to improve their literacy and academic achievement. Too often are an ELL’s speaking and listening skills overlooked and not given enough attention to, even though it is one of the most important parts of communication. Wright encourages teachers working with ELL students to allow time for the student to adjust, not to pressure them into their language development, respect their various stages, bring them into whole class and small group discussions, correct simple language errors in speaking that impeded comprehension, and have them interact and communicate in the classroom for meaningful purposes.

Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a story written in the first person about a young girl named Melinda Sordino. The title of the book, Speak, is ironically based on the fact that Melinda chooses not to speak. The book is written in the form of a monologue in the mind of Melinda, a teenage introvert. This story depicts the story of a very miserable freshman year of high school. Although there are several people in her high school, Melinda secludes herself from them all. There are several people in her school that used to be her friend in middle school, but not anymore. Not after what she did over the summer. What she did was call the cops on an end of summer party on of her friends was throwing. Although all her classmates think there was no reason to call, only Melinda knows the real reason. Even if they cared to know the real reason, there is no way she could tell them. A personal rape story is not something that flows freely off the tongue. Throughout the story Melinda describes the pain she is going through every day as a result of her rape. The rape of a teenage girl often leads to depression. Melinda is convinced that nobody understands her, nor would they even if they knew what happened that summer. Once a happy girl, Melinda is now depressed and withdrawn from the world. She hardly ever speaks, nor does she do well in school. She bites her lips and her nails until they bleed. Her parents seem to think she is just going through a faze, but little do they know, their daughter has undergone a life changing trauma that will affect her life forever.

She developed the five elements framework, an opportunity to step into our full voices. Mostly she created the framework “by listening to patterns in people’s voices and noticing how they reflected their qualities as a person.” All this means that she exercise the vocal range by using 5 aspects of the voice, presenting an exaggeration of each one. She urges the readers or practitioners to pay attention to their own “brain rats” biases triggered by any of the voices. The voice is our primary mean of communication and expression. We rarely last more than a few minutes without its use whether it is talking to someone else or humming quietly to ourselves. We can use the voice artistically in many ways. For example, singing carries the rhythm and melody of speech. It creates patterns of pitch, loudness, and duration that tie together syllables, phrases and sentences. We use the voice for survival, emotion, expression, and to reflect our personality. The loss of the voice is a severe curtailment to many professions. It is affected by general body condition which is why we need to consider the location of the larynx and how that organ produces voice. “Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising” (Mark Twain). Advertising, the very business of claiming attention. Through many successes and twice as many failures, advertising has always been a competitive field to be a part of. New techniques are constantly being shouted out or thought of to try and get a head in the game. Propaganda, obnoxiously large print headlines, and lavish pictures are few of outrageous techniques to get the message out there. However the need to bluff, or over exaggerate products and brands is no longer needed, when you can simply emphasize with a simple tool. Sound, the very tool humans use to associate language, can be the tool used to associate advertising endorsements. With the emotional effects sound can create, it has been shown to create emotions to certain adverts and companies. Despite which emotion is trying to be perceived, sound proves to be more useful as an influencer than visuals in marketing. Either used as the main source of an advert, or the backdrop, sound creates an environment or advertising persona. Truly, sound is the key to successful advertising in society. With the rapid decline in print media and up rise of technology, sound is more of an important factor to advertising media masses today. While sound is found more intrusive than visuals, it has also found to have more impact on consumers. Due to its booming qualities, sound can create both positive and negative attitude towards advertisements and brands. However the echoic impact is still stronger than iconic, and shows in fact why sound should be more widely used.
Opera comes from the Italian word for “musical works”. It achieves the Baroque goal of combining all of the arts. Music and drama along with costume design and staging help to make opera an art to be both seen and heard. The history of opera has imitated the “current trends” of music and drama during the era it was composed. New developments in architecture and painting have been seen in set designs and opera houses throughout Europe. “A feature unique to opera, however, is the power of music, particularly that written for the several registers of the human singing voice.”(www.metmuseum.org) The actor’s voice range portrays the character’s emotion. For example, if the character is afraid or excited their voice tone goes up. If they are serious or authoritative their voice goes down to a lower pitch.

One of the main aspects in communicating is listening. An effective listener is one who, not only comprehends how the speaker feels but, also understands what they are stating. Building a strong connection between the speaker and the listener is one of the first steps to become a good listener. By building this connection speakers should first be in an environment with open minded listeners, it makes them feel more comfortable to state their opinions, feelings and ideas. The way we communicate can be very important in representing ourselves in our community. In the beginning, of the semester, we watched a movie regarding a royal member whom was looked down upon because of his verbal pauses. However, throughout the movie he learns to work with his speaking style. He may have not completely eliminated the flaw but, he did learn how to overcome and adjust with it is style of public speaking. Public speaking is very power it as the authority to make an audience shock, upset, surprised, disbelief, and even to become inspired. By using structure in a speech and applying ethos, pathos, and logos can create a deeper connection to the audience. Therefore, the most impactful part of a speech is its introduction. Such that if the speaker implies a power attention getter they are able to deliver their message successfully. In my class presentation, the times I won speaker of the day I noticed that within my speech the only reason why I was selected was because I provided a strong attention getter and because my voice was very loud and it had minimal of verbal pauses. I have learned that any speech can be delivered successfully when the elements of structure and practiced are present.
