Parents should not spank their children because the parental spanking of children can be harmful to the development of children. Parental spanking of children is a violent disciplinary technique where a parent hits a child’s bottom with an open hand and or object in order to deter the child from practicing behavior the parent may see as negative. I grew up in a home where my parents spanked me and my three younger brothers, and I have seen the parental spanking of children in practice first hand in my life, my brothers, and in the research I have read I have found that parental spanking of children does not work like many people thinks it does. One opinion I have heard is that parents that spank their children are helping build children's character. Another opinion I have heard is that parental spanking of children works because parents spanked their own children and they are fine. Even my friends and peers I respect believe that parents should spank their children because spanking children is the only way children will learn right from wrong. Lastly, I have heard the opinion of close friends that they would not be who they are today if they were not spanked by their parents as children. When I was in preschool-kindergarten my parents told me once not to kiss anyone till I was married, so I did as they said and waited… till I was 22 when I found out it was a joke they told me. Many children, like me, can be very impressionable when they are young, so it’s important that parents are honest, boundaries that are consistent and don't create a relationship rooted in violence. In one study, “80% of mothers reported that the kindergarten children had been spanked at some point” (Lansford 234). Parental spanking of children is so ingrained in society many parents like mine do not even think about how parental spanking of children can affect their relationship with their children. Researchers have found that mothers who spank their children and/or use harsher forms of discipline tend to misinterpret their children's behavior and tend to have a negative bias (Maguire-Jack 1974).
