Can spanking your child be considered as abuse? Although some may see physical punishment as a quick and effective way to stop their kids from causing trouble, others consider it as a serious offense and inhumane. It is important to understand both sides of “good” and “bad” before claiming a side on whether spanking should be acceptable.
Using violence to stop a bad situation may only cause more issues. It is often stated that violence can only cause more violence. Many people believe that hitting your children can only cause an image that encourages violence. We believe that spanking will gain your child’s respect, but it only causes fear. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Sometimes, spanking can cause the situation to get out of hand, leading to more violence. By law, you can be charged if there are any marks on your child that you have inflicted. Tulane University has researched 2,500 three year olds who were spanked while growing up. Evidence proved that the more frequent the spanking, the higher percentage that the child would show aggression by five years old . Hitting is frowned upon for a reason. Sparking fear in a child doesn’t even teach them what they shouldn’t do, without an explanation. Parents should lead by example by explaining the issue, rather than escalating it. Research even shows that spanking can cause children to become more antisocial, rather than more behaving. In many cases, children who were spanked often kept their feelings to themselves and found it harder to get along with others.
