Death has been the consequent for the main characters in each of the first four novels read for the course. The protagonist in each of the first four novels; Werther, Rafael, Ivan Ilyich, and K., respectively; met their demise on the final page of their respective novels. All four directly or indirectly were the cause of their painful demise. Werther chose suicide over conforming to the ways of adulthood, and moving further away from nature. Rafael chose to live a life of possessions, and in turn, his inner-self dwindled. Ivan Ilyich alienated himself from those around him, and hid behind the aristocratic social mask. Finally, Joseph K. causes his won demise by being a puppet of society, conforming to all rules, and to his own sense of guilt. Ivan Ilyich was the only character to somewhat remedy the situation before slipping into the darkness of death. In all cases, the actions of the lives of all four protagonists very clearly displayed their weaknesses as characters.
In Goethe's novel, Werther died a very slow, excruciatingly painful death. He refused to conform to life as it was; refused to move further away from the nature he so cherished. By doing so, Werther was in denial of adulthood. Werther saw suicide as the only escape from adulthood, and his only chance at eternal happiness. will not refuse the bitterest medicines, in order to restore the health he longs for."(July 1) Werther uses this analogy to prove his point that a person will go far to rid themselves of unpleasantness. "He merely turned his head, which was still free to move, and gazed around him."(228) K. had a chance to take control of his own destiny, but instead he chose to conform. His final words were "I'm like a Dog."(229) K feels that he was guilty all along, and now this is the punishment for him.
All four protagonists died at the end of their stories, and all were guilty in their own right. Life was commonplace for Werther, Rafael Valentine, Ivan Ilyich, and Joseph K. until their lives began to change. Each character was ill equipped for such changes, and therefore suffered greatly because of them. If only they were able to transcend themselves, they could have averted the impending disaster of death that was about to be bestowed upon them.

Due to his brother’s death while fighting alongside him in the war, Michael becomes emotionally devastated, and as a result, experiences survivor’s guilt, leading to his suicide. Although this letter is not from Death’s perspective, it still highlights an example of how physical destruction caused by humans can lead to emotional devastation for other humans. Death himself becomes emotionally devastated when Rudy Steiner, Liesel’s best friend, dies from the bomb on Himmel Street. He confesses, “Oh crucified Christ, Rudy … He lay in bed with one of his sisters. She must have kicked him or muscled her way into the majority of the bed space because he was on the very edge with his arm around her … Where was Rudy’s comfort? Where was someone to alleviate this robbery of his life? … He does something to me, that boy. Every time. It’s his only detriment. He steps on my heart. He makes me cry.” (531) This quote shows that Death is emotionally affected by the aftermath of the bomb, because he loses someone that he admires. As a result, Death feels like crying, and leads readers to believe that humanity is destructive. ...ing identity to the point where it no longer exists. This identity can be lost through extreme devotion, new experience, and immense tragedy. Relationships with the most meaningful companions impact both main characters, Elie and Frederic. Due to the events they must encounter alongside loved ones, Elie and Frederic change completely, losing the identity that once existed. The most impactful events of any life are those that involve struggle and tragedy. Any tragic event that one encounters can significantly alter the purpose of life forever. Tragic events such as taking away what one may hold dearest, such as a loved one in the cases of Elie and Frederic. This type of loss can create a saddened, purposeless life in all humans.
At the conclusion the reader is left with a vision of destruction of human life both literal and figurative that is absurd rather than tragic because the victims are not heroic figures reduced to misfortune, They are ordinary characters who meet a grotesque fate.
The sources of Werther’s sorrows are similar to the sources of the creature’s suffering in Frankenstein. This is because, both the Creature and Werther were rejected by the people they love. They all wanted to be apart of the people’s lives and day to day activities but fate did not allow it. Werther was left alone when the girl she loved got married to al elder man. Comparably, the creature in Frankenstein was abandoned by his creator and left all alone in a world whereby he does not even know how to speak and relate with the people around him. Werther had wished to spend his entire life with the girl she loved and when it turned out impossible, he took away his life by committing suicide so as to escape the pain he was going through....
Anyone who reads The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe instantly feels the emotional intensity portrayed by Werther, the protagonist. His speculations about life are indeed unique, especially in modern times when life often goes by quickly without notice. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why his immense emotion strikes a chord with readers as coming from someone crazy or dangerous. Werther’s mental state seems incredibly alive at some times while seemingly lifeless at others. This lifeless state of mind is similar to another sorrowful character in Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five. In his story of Billy Pilgrim, a similar wonder engulfs the reader, causing us to question the cause of both his mindset and of our own. These books bring a couple of interesting questions to mind… How much emotion is too much? How little is too little? These characters struggle with powerful emotion in many ways, and are therefore judged as mad. The two protagonists engage in totally different journeys, but each of them leads the reader to discover the limits of human emotion. These limits are reached by Werther and Billy, therefore leading to both characters’ demise.
It is widely considered that media was forever changed with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in 1450. The printing press made it easier for people to convey their thoughts and ideas while simultaneously reaching the maximum amount of people possible. Within the last century, the evolution of media has been staggering. We can now read the news online from halfway around the world or watch stories on television as they happen. All of these innovations have not come without their problems. In 1774, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote the book The Sorrows of Young Werther, a book that by all accounts was The Catcher in the Rye of its generation. It was banned because it was said to have influenced thousands across Europe to commit a form of copy-cat suicide. Copy-cat suicide is when one person commits a form of suicide that they learned from either local knowledge or accounts of the suicide in the news and other forms of media. This paper will analyze Goethe's influence on what we now know as “The Werther Effect” and its prevalence in other forms of modern media. It is clear in the novel that Werther is a young, educated middle-class German. In understanding this characterization of Werther, it should be noted that at the time when this novel takes place, the middle-class was generally divided between the educated middle-class and the entrepreneurial middle-class. Werther's education played an integral part in the development of his character. The most immediate sign of this was that the novel is written as letters to different individuals indicating that Werther was both intelligent and literate.
The relationship between death and freedom is a common thread throughout Sorrows of a Young Werther by Goethe and Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. The relationship illustrated in both works is that one cannot achieve true freedom until they are dead. Until death, Werther and Raskolnikov will always feel the restrictions that society places upon them. Werther feels restricted due to the unrequited love of Lotte and Raskolnikov feels restricted by the moral code that society establishes. In Sorrows of a Young Werther by Goethe and Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky both characters’ exhibit their freedom through death.

Due to the interdependent relationship between the individual and society, societal values can greatly influence the individual. It can be said that Goethe’s characterisation of Lotte and Werther clearly depict this notion in varying outcomes. It is the option of the reader to decide whether a text contains an inherent meaning or the inability to find meaning at all. The Novella, Balthazar’s Marvelous Afternoon, allows the reader to determine meaning and to distinguish whether Balthazar’s generous approach possesses an underlying meaning. This concept is relevant to Barthes’s work, which criticizes the author’s intentions versus the interpreted context. The Death of the Author, discusses the theory of how an author enters his own death as the act of writing is taking place. This theory no longer allows the author to have definitive authority over the reader. To prevent “interpretive tyranny,” the reader must be able to separate a work from the inventor and conclude one’s own viewpoint.
