People these days often believe everything on the Internet or television without knowing the truth behind it. One of those is sororities and fraternities. People often think them as a party club or social club instead of a club that helps raise money for causes. Sororities and fraternities in college have strict rules, close relationship with one’s another, and their philanthropies that raise money for certain causes. First of all, just like schools and other clubs on campus, sororities also have rules and expectations for their members. Sorority members need to meet a certain GPA to be in it. Sisterhood is one of the things sorority members loves about and that is what makes a sorority. College is such a big environment for all students. Moving from high school to college is a big step in life. Because college is so big that it is impossible to know all the people. It is even harder to have a close friendship with someone because they might not have the same class with next semester. And everyone has a different schedule that it’s difficult to find time to hang out with each other. It is definitely more difficult to the students who have no friends that go to the same college as them. It makes them feel lonely among everybody else. Joining a sorority helps to create a close relationship with other girls in that chapter and the Greek community. A sorority especially also helps students to feel like home when they are away. I often have this question before I joined and when I first joined sorority is what “What is sisterhood?” and “Are they just the same as friendship”. People make fun of how we cherish our sisterhood. They say why I pay to be friends with someone. Sorority women are “connected by their rituals, their philanthropic causes their values and sometimes their living arrangements” (Delta Zeta Website). However, this is not true. Yes, sorority members come to the house every week but because they have meetings every week not just social. It is usually only members are at the meeting without other people. When people say sororities throw party every week, it is not truth. Most of sororities only have two parties per semester and it usually goes to their philanthropy. For example, Delta Zeta throws a party on Halloween. People only look at the outside and think “see sorority only parties and nothing else”. But they don’t look at what is behind that party. Delta Zeta has a party for people to celebrate Halloween but all the profits will go to children with no hearing and help kids with speech. The internet only says sorority has party but it doesn’t say the reason for having one. Joining a sorority does take a lot of time. New members have to go through the process of new members program to make sure the new members actually want to be in it. New members usually get a calendar in the beginning of the year that tells them which events are mandatory and which events are optional. There are usually only two or three events are mandatory. While reading Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, I learned more about the inner workings of Greek Life. I learned that the odds of me finding a sorority are so slim due to my independent and different personality. When rushing and pledging a fraternity you meet brothers from that fraternity and maybe even brothers and pledges from other fraternities. Your social skills greatly improve by actively communicating with brothers from the fraternity and socials, which are events planned with other sororities such as ice skating, bowling, etc. A fraternity pushes you academically, for example, pledges have grade checks before they are initiated as official brothers. For Sigma Chi, a pledge needs above a 3.0 grade point average in order to be initiated. If below, the chances of being dropped from the fraternity is very high.
Greek organizations, such as, fraternities and sororities have been a part of the college experience for centuries. We pride ourselves in brotherly and sisterly love, academic success, and helping others. There are countless stereotypes and myths that surround the “Greek life” name. Just some myths include: all Greeks haze their members, they only care about physical looks not personalities, and they go to college just to party and get drunk. Kappa Delta Sorority upholds none of these stereotypes. We have a strong no haze policy. Hazing is defined as an activity or situation that can cause emotional, mental, or physical discomfort. If a member is caught hazing or if a new member is caught allowing herself to be hazed, there will be major consequences, such as, national probation or deferral of initiation. Kappa Delta also does not look at physical appearance as the only quality for possible new members. We look at personality and qualifications that can benefit our sorority; instead of having a group of women that are pretty and popular, we like to have women with strong morals, work ethic, and have the willingness to love each and every member of Kappa Delta. Kappa Delta Sorority is like no other fraternity or sorority on campus; we do not waste our time with partying and drinking. We pride ourselves in our historical background, philanthropies, and our values. I know Kappa Delta is the best sorority not only on MTSU campus but in the whole country.

Hi Kaitlyn! I am involved in Greek life as well, so I can relate to this! I agree that a huge strength within a sorority are those members who are truly dedicated to their chapter, especially the board members, they are the ones who keep the organization running smoothly (most of the time). A major weakness for a sorority could also be those members who are not as dedicate. I feel like every sorority and fraternity have those members who only care about the social status, and it seems like those are the ones that constantly break the rules and ruin their reputation and put the entire chapter in danger of being put on probation or even kicked off campus. An obvious opportunity for any sorority is kicking out those members who do break the rules
Every sorority proudly represents an organization, for which their goal is to raise money for. My sorority’s national philanthropy is “Sigma Serves Children” which is carried out through the Robbie Page Memorial for the research of Polio. My sorority chapter sold root beer floats and we made seven hundred dollars for our organization.
Greek Life should be accessible to anybody that believes it will enhance their college success. The other reason people are hesitant to join a fraternity or sorority is that students do not want to be hazed. Hazing is humiliation during activities in which fraternities and sororities put you through to becoming a member. It is their way of seeing how prepared you are to be initiated into the group. Although this does not happen at FIU because it is forbidden, many schools throughout the United States haze associate members.
