The author/speaker’s tone is shown as sympathetic towards his brother Sonny, who has an addiction towards drugs. The speaker seems to understand Sonny’s problems and tries to help him throughout the short story.In the beginning of the short story it states “...stared at it in the swinging lights of the subway car, and in the faces and bodies of the people, and in my own face, trapped in the darkness which roared outside…” (page one). In the short story it also states, “And I didn 't write Sonny or send him anything for a long time. When I finally did, it was just after my little girl died…”(page six). These quotes help to prevail the fact that the speaker has sympathy for his younger brother. The speaker 's tone is described as sympathetic. The way he describes his surrounds shows the pain he feels for his brother. For example, he says that he feels trapped. Throughout the story, the speaker continues to feel this way. When he was teaching his algebra class, he fears that his students can end up like his brother Sonny. The speaker was constantly contemplating on whether or not to write to his brother. Eventually, the speaker writes to his brother after his daughter dies. He seems to understand what suffering feels like so this provokes him to write to his brother. They had a disagreement about what Sonny will do with his future. Sonny wants to do one thing and his brother thinks he should do something else. During the flashback, there was a conflict between Sonny and his brother. They were having a conversation about Sony’s future. It states,“ … There was a long silence. He moved from the kitchen table to the window. That 's a terrible idea...I want to join the army. Or the navy, I don 't care. If I say I 'm old enough, they 'll believe me.Then I got mad. It was because I was so scared. You must be crazy. You goddamn fool, what the hell do you want to go and join the army for?"(page eighteen).Both Sonny and his brother were in the kitchen talking after their mother 's funeral. The speaker wanted Sonny to have a bright future. They began to talk about what Sonny should do in life. Sonny wants to become a Jazz musician. The speaker thinks that he should do more in life than be a Jazz musician.The speaker thought that was a terrible idea. He wants the best for his brother. The speaker says that he should live with his sister in law until he finishes school. Sonny did not want to and was reluctant. But, the speaker said that they have a piano. The older brother, the narrator, finds himself struggling at the beginning of the story. While riding the subway, he reads in the paper that Sonny has been arrested for possession of drugs. During his day of teaching, he reflects on prior years with Sonny and their past adventures as young boys. He remembers Sonny's "wonderfully direct brown eyes, and great gentleness and privacy." The narrator sees his brother as a good boy, not "hard or evil or disrespectful." He wonders how many of his algebra students are similar to Sonny in appearance and personality along with his drug habits. This comparison allows the older brother to conclude that Sonny was probably not arrested on his initial use of drugs. It also allows the narrator is see that Sonny may be like most of the other young boys in Harlem.
Sonny’s brother feels guilty after talking to Sonny’s friend and after his daughter died he decides to write Sonny a letter, he says, “I didn't write Sonny or send him anything for a long time. When I finally did, it was just after my little girl died, and he wrote me back a letter which made me feel like a bastard”(126). From there on he would write and send things to Sonny. Sonny’s brother has been distant towards him, but recently, he has been trying to understand him and help him. Sonny decides to take his brother to a concert to see if he will understand what he is trying to convey through music. Sonny hasn’t played the piano for “over a year” and he is a little bit rusty (147). Sonny also says he isn’t on “much better terms with life” than he was a year ago (147). In a way though, he is in a much better place, because his brother is there for him.
As "Sonny's Blues" opens, the narrator tells of his discovery that his younger brother has been arrested for selling and using heroin. Both brothers grew up in Harlem, a neighborhood rife with poverty and despair. Though the narrator teaches school in Harlem, he distances himself emotionally from the people who live there and their struggles and is somewhat judgmental and superior. He loves his brother but is distanced from him as well and judgmental of his life and decisions. Though Sonny needs for his brother to understand what he is trying to communicate to him and why he makes the choices he makes, the narrator cannot or will not hear what Sonny is trying to convey. In distancing himself from the pain of upbringing and his surroundings, he has insulated himself from the ability to develop an understanding of his brother's motivations and instead, his disapproval of Sonny's choice to become a musician and his choices regarding the direction of his life in general is apparent. Before her death, his mother spoke with him regarding his responsibilities to Sonny, telling him, "You got to hold on to your brother...and don't let him fall, no matter what it looks like is happening to him and no matter how evil you get with him...you may not be able to stop nothing from happening. But you got to let him know you're there" (87) His unwillingness to really hear and understand what his brother is trying to tell him is an example of a character failing to act in good faith.
Stories having similar characteristics are very common nowadays. While reading “the Lesson” and “Sonny’s Blues” it was apparent that the story was alike in many ways. I wonder how two separate stories could be so parallel, so I did some research on the authors. While researching the author of “The Lesson”, Toni Cade Bambara, I found out she was born in Harlem just like the main character, Sylvia, in her story. Like Bambara, James Baldwin, the author of “Sonny’s Blues”, was born in Harlem as well.
The opening paragraph of the story contains a metaphorical passage: "I stared at it in the swinging light of the subway car, and in the faces and bodies of the people, and in my own face, trapped in the darkness which roared outside"(349). This reference is significant because it is a contrast to the dismal society that the narrator and his brother Sonny live in. The darkness is the portrayal of the community of Harlem that is trapped, in their surroundings by physical, economic, and social barriers. The obvious nature of darkness has overcome the occupants of the Harlem community. The narrator, an algebra teacher, observes a depressing similarity between his students and his brother, Sonny. This is true because the narrator is fearful for his students falling into a life of crime and drugs, as did his brother. The narrator notes that the cruel realities of the streets have taken away the possible light from the lives of his brother and his students. The narrator makes an insightful connection between the darkness that Sonny faced and the darkness that the young boys are presently facing. This is illustrated in the following quote:
With the narrator having a responsibility to take care of his brother, he consistently forces the fact that he wants his brother to be well off and not care about his passion in music. The older they got, the more they drove away from each other because of the fact the narrator becomes overly protective with Sonny, and uses a “tough love” strategy though it does not making any positive effect. More specifically speaking, Baldwin is assessing through the fictional story the difficulties in understanding and accepting those who do not comply with social norms. His determination to practice the piano every single day payed off by him accomplishing his goal of being a jazz pianist at the end of the story. For him to play the piano every hour of every day shows his commitment to the dream he has in life. “well, you may think it’s funny now, baby but it’s not going to be funny when you have to make your living at it., let me tell you that. I was furious because I knew he was laughing and I didn’t know why” -(pg574). This was said by the Narrator when he came home from war after his mother had died. This shows the obstacles that Sonny faces in trying to accomplish his dream because even his own brother doesn’t believe in it. He must be determined to make sure that he gets what he wants in his life. Determination is what led him to defy his brother’s opinion and to do what he wanted with his life. It’s this determination that is the light in Sonny’s life and one of the things that truly makes him
After discovering what has happened to Sonny, the narrator makes it seem as if he does not care and does not want interference in the life he has worked so hard to create. This is proven when the narrator discusses what has happened to Sonny with one of his brother’s friends. First of all, the identity of Sonny is contrasted sharply with his brother, the narrator. The most obvious difference between the two is their names. Sonny's name is prominent and part of the story's theme. Sonny's brother, on the other hand, is never given a name. Despite being the voice and the perspective of the story, the narrator does not have a distinct identity. He is known solely by his relationship with others, his status as a brother, a son, a husband and a father.
The narrator allows Sonny to move into his apartment. By allowing Sonny to live with him he has allowed to trust him again. For example, the narrator explains, “The idea of searching Sonny’s room made me still. I scarcely dared to admit to myself what I’d be searching for. I didn’t know what I’d do if I found it. Or if I didn’t” (pg. 91). This shows how the narrator had the opportunity to search his brother’s room, but had the ability not to. Tension grew among brothers while living under one roof. This starts the climax of both arguing in the apartment. The narrator doesn’t understand why his brother wants to be a musician. This argument was built of emotion both had and not yet discussed among each other. Such as the narrator expressing his anger towards his brother’s drug use and Sonny’s frustration towards the narrator not understanding his plan to become a jazz musician. For example, the narrator states, “I realized, with this mocking look, that there stood between us, forever, beyond the power of time or forgiveness, the fact that I had held silence – so long! – when he had needed human speech to help him” (pg.94). The argument with his brother made him realize that he abandon his younger brother when he needed him the most. He realized that if he would have spoken out and talk about his drug use that he wouldn’t have to go
The story “Sonny’s Blues” By James Baldwin is about a jazz musician and his brother in 1950’s Harlem. The story centers on Sonny who uses jazz music as an escape from his depression. James Baldwin captures the art of jazz during this time period. The themes in this short story are perhaps varied, but all of them revolve around some form of suffering. One theme shows how music can promote change and understanding within relationships. A second theme reveals suffering caused by guilt. Yet another theme references the results of suffering brought about by searching for ones’ identity and how that leads to misunderstanding. There are also subthemes concerning racism and poverty.
James Baldwin was an African-American writer who grew up in Harlem and was considered one of the 20th century’s greatest writers. He achieved this status through his use of racial and social issues within many of his masterpieces. His experience with discrimination, poverty, and drugs lead him to write many short stories about the struggles African-Americans faced in America. His style is considered one of the most distinctive styles in American literature. “Sonny’s Blues” was one of James Baldwin’s earlier masterpieces and is set in Harlem, New York just like many of his other literary works of art. The short story is about two estranged African-American brothers and how “that relationship has moved through phases of separation and return”
