West London-based Mumford & Sons is a folk/indie-rock band that favours atypical instrumentation, conjures up a unique sound, and appeals to a wide range of listeners. Emerging from what some in the media have labeled as the “West London Folk scene”, Mumford and Sons features four 20-something multi-instrumentalists and close friends: Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall, and Ted Dwayne. The English foursome joined forces in December 2007, bonded over a mutual appreciation of folk, rock, country, and bluegrass, and adopted the stage name of Mumford & Sons to give the band a familial connotation. Four years and several live performances later, Mumford & Sons achieved widespread, multi-platinum success with their unique brand of music. Following their performance at the Grammy Awards in February 2011 (alongside Bob Dylan, nonetheless), the band found itself topping music charts, having sold millions of copies of their debut album, Sigh No More, worldwide.
The Transcendentalist movement in 1836 showed that the people of America wanted their own identity. The same ideas from Transcendentalism are shown today in many songs, books, and movies. While there are many different parts of Transcendentalism, one of the most relevant in modern day America, is being able to be self-reliant and not having to rely on other people to tell you who you are. “Pork and Beans” by: Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer in the band Wheezer, is a perfect example of being self-reliant. In “Pork and Beans”, Rivers shows a desire to be different “Imma do the things that I wanna do/I ain't got a thing to prove to you. . .” (Lines 5-6). He shows that he will not conform to the way society thinks,
Don McLean was a famous singer/songwriter who was popular in the 1970’s. His music is mostly classified into rock-and-roll. The audience of this song can be anyone. The majority of the people listening to the song in the 1970’s were hippies, or people who had open minds. The purpose of this song is not just to entertain people with beautiful music, but to inform people about the life and death of Buddy Holly. McLean even mentions the touching songs Holly wrote when he describes Holly’s music as “a voice that came from you and me.” In this quote, McLean is saying that Holly’s music voices many strong opinions.
The Fray's hit song, 'How To Save a Life,' tells a story of a mentor, also a friend, who is trying to 'save a life' of a troubled youth. The story starts off with the teenager and this friend sitting down to have a talk about what is wrong in the teen?s life. The second line reads, 'he walks, you say sit down it's just a talk,' this showing anger and fear of what might be brought up in conversation, so he tries to run away from the problem. Although neither individual wants to have the talk, they both respect each other enough to be polite, 'He smiles politely back at you/

“Take Me To Church”, written by artist Hozier (Andrew Hozier-Bryne), is a mid-tempo indie rock-soul song that delivers a strong message to the Catholic church. “Take Me To Church” was released on September 13th, 2013 as Hozier’s hit debut single. Soon, it became popular globally, becoming the number-one hit in twelve countries. All kinds of people were listening to Hozier’s song, having no idea that there is an underlying meaning that they are singing along to. “Take Me To Church” was written as a giant dig at the Catholic church and Catholic believers. Hozier uses a gospel hymn-like style to portray putting the church on a pedestal, but in reality he was making a mockery of the Catholic religion. Hozier uses examples from The Holy
Sheff references Kurt Cobain’s suicide note saying “It’s better to burn out than to fade away.” This seems to comes to represent what seems to be Nic’s ending unless he gets the help he needs. Nic was on a path that was seeming to lead to death by overdose, in which he would “burn out” instead of being able to “fade away like an old soldier”. Kurt Cobain is referenced again when Sheff states that he “wants to scream like Kurt Cobain. I want to scream at him.” This gives insight as to how the musical stylings of Kurt Cobain seem to be a trigger for David Sheff’s memories of his addict of a son. These references illustrate the emotion that is being felt by the author while making connections to the life of a famous man who was a great influence on Sheff’s
The only rules that an artist goes by are the ones they set upon themselves. Artist’s criticize current hot topics and sometimes explore their context threw the use of their imaginations. One very fine example of this is Madonna’s Like a Prayer music video at the time that it was released it was a huge hit on the music charts. Still today “ Like a Prayer” is a very well known song. At the time of its release it was at the center of controversy with parent groups, church groups, mainstream media, and the government. Throughout the history of art this has been a reoccurring phenomenon that art can be offensive. My position within my group is I am a member of the media but I am neutral and am just interpreting the content and the implied context of the video.
The story “Nipple Jesus” is a work of contemporary British fiction by Nick Hornby. This story presents many important themes such as religion and sexuality, illusion, and intolerance. However, perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the story is the character exploration and development of the narrator, Dave.
Whether it is a happy memory or a sad memory Green Day has covered it. In the song “Time of Your Life” the memories are happier and the song is much more detailed. In the song “Wake Me up When September Ends” the memories are much sadder. The modes and moods are the two biggest differences in the two songs. While the biggest similarities are they are both about memories. Both of these songs reflect on memories in a person’s life.
My mother has been a very important influence in my life. They have given me moral support when times have been bleak and depressing. In Donald Glover’s song, “Stand Tall”, he addresses how his parents have been there for him; how they are caring when times are rough. As a sophomore in high school, I feel as if I relate to the feelings he shares in the song. Donald starts the song off by talking about his attitude towards things as a 9-year-old boy; he says “when the sun is rising over streets so barren since the evening, colors flash before my eyes”. Donald was raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia, a small city with streets that didn’t have much life to them, I feel as if the same description applies to Ashland in the sense that Ashland is a small and boring town.
1 in every 2,000 people was murdered in Baltimore in 2016. Poems and songs with similar themes, share a lot of elements. Elements like occasion, purpose and the speaker can be compared and contrasted to find out which piece is more artistic and which writer used their poetic devices more thoroughly. ”You make the Culture” by Amy King and the song “Bigger than us” by Damian Lillard. “Bigger than us” as more artistic than “You make The Culture”, because of Damian Lillard’s better use of The theme of gun violence and poetic devices.
Today we live in a society where people promote love to only be about looks, bodies and social statuses through apps, entertainment and songs. In the song “Inside Out” by The Chainsmokers featuring Charlee defies this stereotype and shows how they value personality. In “Inside Out,” The Chainsmokers and Charlee conveys the theme by demonstrating how it is important to love someone because of their personality and not just their looks through their use of word choice, metaphors and repetition throughout the song.
I have been waiting for these readings for a while. Why? Just like how the Ark of the Covenant was my favorite part to the Old Testament, Jesus’ Passion is my favorite part to the New Testament. These readings are my favorite because I am able to connect them to the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
