After the band green day released their album “dookie” in 1994 green day was near the top of their career. It was some time since their last album 10 years later they released their album American idiot to respond of their outlook of post 9/11 america political tension and threats of terrorism were at a all time high so they timed the release of their album at a perfect time when people were distrusting in the government. The main part of the album is the song “jesus of suburbia” where it tells a story of a person named jimmy the entire album is focused around this person getting caught up and bewildered from his suburban life which lead to him leaving his home. During his prolonged drug use He falls in love with a woman who is known as “whatsername” Throughout the entire album. The next two songs on the album are “shes a rebel” and “extraordinary girl” are dedicated towards jimmys love for whatsername. Jimmy becomes even more heavily depressed over the course of these songs before the song “Wake me up when september ends” Billie joe armstrong initially wrote the song about his dad passing away, but the song is also part of the story that has been created throughout this entire album. In jimmy's story it's a time of being sad and to mourn. The next song in the album is “homecoming” as his life is slowly wasting away Jimmy kills off his alter ego St.Jimmy the hero of the story when Billy joe sings “ Jimmy died today he blew his brains out into the bay in the state of mind it's my own private suicide.” Jimmy has put himself apart from his previous self and is living a life he didn't want and everyone is doing better off without him so he decides it's better just to go back home again hence the name “homecoming” the song itself is sad while merciful at the same time the album ends at the song “whatsername” to recall the parts of his life that he disregarded and wish
