Gun culture 1 in every 2,000 people was murdered in Baltimore in 2016. Poems and songs with similar themes, share a lot of elements. Elements like occasion, purpose and the speaker can be compared and contrasted to find out which piece is more artistic and which writer used their poetic devices more thoroughly. ”You make the Culture” by Amy King and the song “Bigger than us” by Damian Lillard. “Bigger than us” as more artistic than “You make The Culture”, because of Damian Lillard’s better use of The theme of gun violence and poetic devices. “You make the Culture” and “Bigger Than Us” have very similar elements in the lyrics. This verse shows what people should be doing, in “You Make The Culture” Amy King shares her emotions, but doesn’t tell the people what they should be doing. In “Bigger Than Us” Damian Alludes to many famous people, events, and books who in some way, have had an effect on him and many others. Damien Alludes to Bible verses that have had effects on him and his way of thinking. “God created us equal, so let's embrace it, when in life you run into evil you gotta face it.”(Lillard line 61/62) In this line Damian is alluding to the book of Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, Neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Jesus Christ.”,Damien’s verse takes the concept of “all people are equal” from this Bible verse. In “You Make The Culture” Amy King seems to lack alluding to real events, which should be a priority for a subject such as gun violence. Metaphors are used multiple times by Damian Lillard to compare, unlike things in a way that the listener can understand. “Emotions rolling, just know that I’ve been on that same coaster.”(Lillard line 15) In this line, Damian compares the ups and downs of life to the ups and downs of a rollercoaster.
