Gun culture 1 in every 2,000 people was murdered in Baltimore in 2016. Poems and songs with similar themes, share a lot of elements. Elements like occasion, purpose and the speaker can be compared and contrasted to find out which piece is more artistic and which writer used their poetic devices more thoroughly. ”You make the Culture” by Amy King and the song “Bigger than us” by Damian Lillard. “Bigger than us” as more artistic than “You make The Culture”, because of Damian Lillard’s better use of The theme of gun violence and poetic devices. “You make the Culture” and “Bigger Than Us” have very similar elements in the lyrics. This verse shows what people should be doing, in “You Make The Culture” Amy King shares her emotions, but doesn’t tell the people what they should be doing. In “Bigger Than Us” Damian Alludes to many famous people, events, and books who in some way, have had an effect on him and many others. Damien Alludes to Bible verses that have had effects on him and his way of thinking. “God created us equal, so let's embrace it, when in life you run into evil you gotta face it.”(Lillard line 61/62) In this line Damian is alluding to the book of Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, Neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Jesus Christ.”,Damien’s verse takes the concept of “all people are equal” from this Bible verse. In “You Make The Culture” Amy King seems to lack alluding to real events, which should be a priority for a subject such as gun violence. Metaphors are used multiple times by Damian Lillard to compare, unlike things in a way that the listener can understand. “Emotions rolling, just know that I’ve been on that same coaster.”(Lillard line 15) In this line, Damian compares the ups and downs of life to the ups and downs of a rollercoaster.     This anthology is beautifully diverse and unique. Although the poems are new, they take reader back in time through issues that are relevant to the 21st century life. Most of the poems are experimental form probably because the poets are trying to get their voices heard by doing new things, which I think work well for a majority of these poems and others, not so much. Analicia Sotelo’s “I’m Trying to Write a Poem About A Virgin and It’s Painful” is an experimental prose form, and it’s beautiful. A part of the poem reads, “Some people said I should take her out of the poem. Other people said No, take her out of the lake and put her in the bedroom” (40). The poet making the process of writing a poem the poem itself is something new for me. The contrast in this piece also works well, although I still do not understand the metaphor of the lake. Also, Damian Caudill has a beautiful form in “Tuesday Ordinary.” The form and the style seem experimental but worthwhile. The poem is written from the perspective of Trayvon Martin’s hoodie, which many, especially in the African-American community believed contributed to his murder. The depth of thought that might have gone into the penning of this poem is commendable. However, I did not think this experimental form works well for “It was a miracle route everyone had been searching for and the story caused a sensation” on page 5. The later part of the first section left me with the question, “why is this a poem, or included in a poem? And I find it hard to comprehend why these different sections are fused under one poem. Also in Kara Kai Wang’s “Idiom,” I find the footnote alienating as a reader, because of the language used. I would have preferred if the footnoted words are in another languag...

The big intro before the first verse of U2’s song helped me feel the tension in the song before the lyrics even commenced. The fact that Lum writes his poem in an aggressive tone gave me a sense that he was describing the hostility in which Caucasian Americans treat minorities in the U.S. in the active form.
