In the article “Sometimes Others Know us Better than We Know Ourselves”, by Simine Vazire and Erika N. Carlson makes the claim that other people have a better understanding and knowledge of our personality. Vazire and Carlson claim that in order to have accuracy of one’s own personality there needs to be a balance of our own knowledge and others perceptions of our personality (2) . The reason for needing others perception and insight is due to blind spots. A blind spot in personality, is defined as information that is omitted or knowledge not perceived correctly due to our own biases and motives (3). Blind spots are formed for many reasons but two basic reasons are lack of information and motivated cognitive processes (4). Lack of knowledge …show more content…
For instance, if you are a dominant person and are very assertive you may rub people the wrong way without any knowledge of doing so. Therefore a lack of knowledge in regards to our personality characteristics can have a negative impact on our relationships. The second reason is motivated cognitive processes, this refers to our motives, biases, fears and wishes. This means that we will turn a blind eye to something we do not want to believe or see. This can have a very negative impact on our perception of ourselves and our personality. Another blind spot that is not one of the main reasons but still plays a role in the formation of these blind spots are self- protective motives (13). This refers to defense mechanisms, where we are not objective and willing to see what could be there or the truth. For instance ones objectiveness to negative information, thoughts or …show more content…
By being open to feedback we will gain more information, that we can use or information that we can use to change past or negative personality characteristics we possess. Feedback can also give us positive information that we may not be aware of or do not have a good enough self-esteem to acknowledge. While it is mentioned in the article that sometimes feedback is not always the best method of understanding our own personality due to our self-defense systems put in place. Another method of establishing a better understanding of our personality is taking the perspectives of others when analyzing our own perceptions. When it says to look at how others perceive us, that means watching their social cues and interactions they have with us. This means noticing things such as them not liking the manner in which we approach certain things or say certain things. Others perceptions of ourselves is very different which is why we need to pay attention and ask for feedback in order to strengthen our personality and
I personally liked the Character Traits/Feedback assessment because I was able to determine my results without being told my character traits. It was challenging for me to select negative traits because I wanted to display myself in a positive light but I realized both positive and negative traits make me who I am....
For example, I can say that about myself, people usually think that I am a very quiet, nice person. The people that truly know me though, know that I am very loud and sometimes not generally in the nice category. In politics, it happens a lot too, let’s say Donald Trump for example, during the race for presidency, he was typically seen as a very rude, and not very smart person, but when he was saying his acceptance speech he was actually very polite and even thanked Hillary for a good run. So, Trump wasn’t who he seemed to be and neither am I just like in Kate the Great, you’ll learn that people aren’t always what they seem to
The personality is unique to individual and through good personality one can avoid the mental diseases like ego, jealousy, pride, greediness and ill ambition. Every single individual has a personality; it is the very quintessence of human existence. Personality drives our interactions with others, our desires – conscious and unconscious, our perceived needs, and to a certain extent, even our actions. Psychodynamic approaches to personality are focused on the belief that we have virtually no control over our own personality, that it is primarily controlled by unconscious powers. Social cognitive approaches to personality centers around the belief that we still have little to no control over our own personality, and that the cognitive influence, that is to say thoughts, feelings, expectations and values – along with the observation of others behavior is the primary influence on personality. These two approaches to personality are so radically different, and yet both have their own merits – they are two of many, and nobody is quite sure what the truth is.
Personality is patterns of thinking, behavior and emotional responses that make up individuality over time. Psychologist attempt to understand how personality develops and its impact on how we behave. Several theories attempt to explain personality, using different approaches. The social-cognitive and humanistic approaches are two of many theories that attempt to explain personality. This essay will identify the main concepts of social-cognitive and humanistic approach, identify perspective differences and discuss approach limitations.
I can remember sitting in class, feeling eyes burning through me, dodging inquisitive glances from all sides, and anxiously awaiting the bell to ring for lunchtime. As most people know, lunch is the most dreaded part of the first day at a new school. First day of school memories are still fairly vivid for me; my father was in the JAG corps in the Army and my family moved with biannual regularity. In fact, I even attended three different high schools. While this may seem highly undesirable to some, I learned an incredible amount about myself, the world, and other people through moving that I may never have learned otherwise. What I have learned about myself and the world will without a doubt contribute to my success in life and even law school, but what I have learned about other people is of greatest relevance to studying and practicing law.
I believe our personalities make up who we are and how others perceive us at times. Personalities are our own unique qualities, that we possess as individuals. In writing this short paper, I have found that psychologists use assessments to define an individual’s personality to determine their qualities and what makes them different from other individuals. Through the Big Five Personality test, I found it difficult to define and understand an individual personality
It may have its limitations because people do not have the same personality in every situation. For example, a teen or adolescent will talk and interact with their parents way differently than with their friends. With this in mind, a person will exhibit many different personalities throughout the day. Which one is the correct personality or corresponds with who the person truly is. Also, the test only provides answers to how the individual’s personality is at one particular time. Through the first eighteen years of life, a person will change drastically because interests, aspirations, and social situations change. Maybe future improvements of the test can incorporate predictions as to how traits and personalities will change overtime. Nevertheless, the Big Five personality test is the best test developed and is a great way of understanding what makes us
Different people describe the word ‘personality’ differently. Martin et al. (2010,p.610) describes personality as a “particular pattern of behavior and thinking that prevails across time and situations, and differentiates one person from another”. According to Mullins and Christy (2013,p.136), they explain that Personality may be perceived as “consisting of stable characteristics that explains why an individual behaves a certain way. Independence, conscientiousness, agreeableness and self-control are all examples of personality characteristics”. Mullins and Christy (2013, p.136) further explain that we can only identify and understand a person’s personality from listening, watching and observing them. For instance, an independent person may show independence characteristic by demonstrating a strong sense of self-sufficiency. It would be expected that this individual would not be dependable on other people around him and if this is established, it can support the characteristic being a consistent part of the person’s behavior. Individuals are therefore generally consistent in the way they respond to situations. At...
To a wandering mind, the Internet poses as a platform for endless opportunities of intellectual stimulation, and limitless boundaries for a curious consciousness. However, to the well-versed Matthew Thomas, he is convinced that this contemporary virtual playground masks the textual nature of literature that this world is beginning to forget. To a young, yet well-seasoned expert in the field of literature, Thomas has a multitude of experiences and life events he endured, which served as a major inspiration for his novels. Moreover, the fact that he is so bold as to contest a platform as popular as the Internet in a world where it is taking over, his methodologies and reasoning provide significant value and contrast. Lastly, his in depth
Applying the tenets of this theory to personality, Skinner felt that our environment and society shapes who we are and the personality traits that we develop. Instead of changing our internal response...
According to University of Reading (2012), “Feedback can improve a student's confidence, self-awareness and enthusiasm for learning.” Feedback is important because it helps student understand their progress whilst achieving goals. Goal can be anything for instance to pass with good grades, to learn and understand the topic etc. Feedback helps to identify your strengths and weaknesses. For example, imagine yourself learning to play basketball, you have a coach who is guiding you and providing constant feedback on your progress versus you teaching yourself; big difference in terms of monitoring and feedback isn't it?
After the self-assessment, now I feel confident about my qualities and how I need to deal with people with different personality having very differently thinking and how we can come to a common solution of any problem.
Personality is a characteristic that plays a major role in one’s individuality. “One has many parts that make up his personality” (Kramer 27). One may show these parts in different ways. There are a variety of personalities that one can have. If one wants others to see him as fun, he must have a fun and joyful personality. If one has an outgoing personality, one may have many friends and have a very social life. Many times a person can be judged by his personality. One’s personality may vary from day to day. One should always try to express the most unique personality possible.
Many different theories have been made on how a personality is made, developed and influenced. Erik Erikson believed that a personality is not affected by the human instinct installed inside all of us or the sexuality of an individual. Erikson believed that an individual’s personality is shaped much more by relationship formed between
