In the story “Some Tings Lie So Deep”by Denise Barnard, the main character is named Jewel and she tis struggling with her sense of self. Her mother has been diagnosed with cancer. Jewel is spending as much time as she can with her mother. She does not like her real name so she tells everyone at school that her name is Julie. First of all, Julie is an insecure individual. When Julie meets with her boyfriend, he says that her real name Jewel “sounds like one of those names from the soap opera my mom likes to watch. My dad says they are garbage.” This results in Julie yelling at her mom when mom calls her Jewel. Julie states that a jewel is “something you buy in a gem shop.” By questioning her own name, Julie is showing the reader how she is
It has come to my attention, as your media advisor, that you have been involved in a sex scandal of massive proportion. Due to the pictures found on your phone and the recent pregnancy of the same young woman, you must find a solution to clear your name to the public(The Associated Press). There are many options that you might be willing to look into to clear your name under these unfortunate circumstances, but in this case I would refer to the ideas of Elizabeth Kolbert for assistance. In her book "Stooping to Conquer" she claims that the best option to relieve your name of this scandal is through " comedy that makes fun of oneself". By following the ideas of Kolbert you will be
The book Fearfully and Wonderfully Made by Dr. Paul Brand & Philips Yancey gives a whole new meaning on what is studying biology. He starts by describing the very first time he saw a cell. He was amazed and from there on he learn how to be a biology student, while still having strong beliefs. He compares the human body as a community. Since each individual cell can live for itself. All cells come together to sustain the larger organism and properly function the way it should be.The analogy in 1 Corinthians 12, compares the human body to the church, where he states how god put each individual cell in its place for a reason. We all are made up of many cells but, we can not function if there are not together as a whole.
The story I chose for this analysis is “Why, you reckon?” by Langston Hughes. IN this analysis I will be focusing on how the great depression in Harlem had effect on the story, how racism played a part, and how or if the characters were justifyied in their actions. During this time period the intense racial divide combined with the economic harships that plagued the U.S. during the 1923’s makes for an interesting story that makes you think if the charaters were really justified.
Imagination is a quality that everyone has, but only some are capable of using. Maxine Hong Kingston wrote “No Name Woman” using a great deal of her imagination. She uses this imagination to give a story to a person whose name has been forgotten. A person whose entire life was erased from the family’s history. Her story was not written to amuse or entertain, but rather to share her aunts’ story, a story that no one else would ever share. The use of imagination in Kingston’s creative nonfiction is the foundation of the story. It fills the gaps of reality while creating a perfect path to show respect to Kingston’s aunt, and simultaneously explains her disagreement with the women in her culture.
influence all her life and struggles to accept her true identity. Through the story you can
Jewel, Addie's son by Whitfield, is 18 years old. Like Pearl, the product of Hester Prynne's adulterous affair in Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter, Jewel's name is a symbol of the value his mother places on him. The favoritism that Addie showed him is responsible for the antagonism between him and Darl. Jewel personifies Addie's preference for experience over words. He is always in motion. He expresses himself best through actions. When he verbalizes his love for Addie- in his single monologue- he does so with a violent fantasy about hurling down stones on outsiders. Elsewhere, he expresses his love for her through deeds, not words.

...her name, and a pink ribbon from her cap flutters down from the sky. In disbelief that even his own wife who he loves had fell to yet the same temptation everyone else in the community had, the narrator has an epiphany. Instead of reaffirming him and his wife’s Paritan beliefs and impurities, the next morning the narrator exits the woods and returns to his Christian village, and every person he passes seems evil to him. The change of heart he had in the forest left him unassured of himself as well as no longer being able to trust anyone, even his own wife. This overall leaves the protagonist in and harassed and unhappy state.
In Act II Scene II during Hamlets “O, what a rogue” soliloquy Hamlet goes on about how much he sucks and begins to question the ghost he has seen in Act I. Hamlet states, “The spirit I have seen/ May be the devil: and the devil hath power” (II.II.596-597). In this statement, Hamlet basically says, “Maybe the ghost of my Dad I saw was the devil.” If I were put in this situation I would have been more skeptical than Hamlet was, even though he was grieving. I wouldn’t take such rash actions of planning on murdering my uncle just because some ghost told me to do so. Be that as it may, I can understand why Hamlet would believe it is his father's ghost and can only imagine how sincerely mad that would make a person. I feel as if Hamlet and his Dad
The first element of irony is looks are deceiving. Mrs. Loisel wanted to look the part for the party so bad that she borrowed what she thought was the most expensive necklace her friend had. The narrator of the book wrote, “Suddenly she discovered, in a black satin case, a superb diamond necklace; her heart began to beat covetously. Her hands trembled as she lifted it. She fastened it round her neck, upon her high dress, and remained in ecstasy at sight of herself.” (Maupassant 202). Mrs. Loisel has fallen in love with the necklace when she saw it, and didn’t want any other jewelry to wear along with it. Little did she know that the necklace was a fake and she probably would have been able to buy that necklace with the little money that she had. Maybe she didn’t realize it was a fake because she never wears anything that expensive or maybe the necklace was a really good fake. Mrs. Loisel thought it was expensive though, which ma...
Furthermore, the lifestyle both women want ends up in disaster however, one ends in death while the other in hard labor. In "The Necklace", the wife ends up losing her friend’s expensive necklace which causes her to work hard to earn enough money to pay of a new one. Due to all the work she loses her beauty. In contrast, whereas in "The Jewels" the constant attendance of the opera house during the winter causes her to die of inflammation which resulted a deep sorrow towards the husband. Both wife’s lived life differently. Both tries to find the best way to fulfill their desire for the good
The song “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” by Randy Newman, pertains to the theme of friendship in Boy21. The friendship formed by Finley and Russell has an invaluable impact on Russell’s path to recovery, and demonstrates a relationship in which both friends will be there for each other. The line, “You’ve got troubles, and I’ve got ‘em too,” represents the struggles that Finley and Russell help each other through, such as Finley helping Russell get accustomed to Bellmont, or Russell helping Finley through his grief after Erin flees Bellmont. The line, “There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you,” relates to a relationship in which the two members love each other unconditionally, such as the relationship between Finley and Erin. Even when Finley
Human nature is similar to time. It changes as we continue on in life. For example, in the story “Are We Naturally Good or Bad?,” it supports how humans are good. On the other hand, in “The Midas Touch,” it explains how we are greedy. Also, in the “Myth of Human Nature,” it shows how human nature can affect us as humans. To sum up, human nature can be adjusted in time, and we each have different takes on human nature.
Debbie and Julie is a story about a pregnant girl, Julie, who ran away from home just five months earlier. The story starts with Julie leaving Debbie's apartment while she is in labour. Debbie had been taking care of Julie, but she had gone away with her boyfriend. Julie went to a shed, as she had planned out, to give birth to her baby. After giving birth, she left the baby in a telephone box, where it was found and brought to the hospital, just a short while after. Julie decided to go home after giving birth to the baby. She covered up the fact, which she had blood all over her, and was in pain when going home to her parents. Her parents were very tearful when Julie returned home, they were afraid to ask her questions about her disappearance
There was a lot that I have learned this semester from this class. Some of the stuff I learned is more important than other stuff I have learned. One of the most important things I learned from study strategies is having better communication skills. I used to never email my professors or give them a call to let them know I wasn't going to be in there class I just wouldn't show up to class and they would be really frustrated and upset with me that I wouldn't go to class and never tell them. This class has majorly helped me get in the habit of contacting them and letting them know when I wasn't going to there.
