Philosophy Is wanting to know more about what it means to be a human being, the basic nature of reality, what limits our knowledge or feeds what we know, and what is considered good and or right in society. Our beliefs are really up to our own imagination, and philosophy questions these beliefs in order to understand the reason behind them. Plato’s parable of the cave offers a good perception of human reality. If a prisoner were to be locked away in a cave with no interpretation of the outside world, and his only reality were chains and shadows cast on the cave walls, it would be difficult at first to adapt to outside reality. I believe that at first, the prisoner would have a hard time outside of the cave, and his level of comfort would be more in-tuned back in the cave where he was kept for so long. But I also think that once exposed to the real world outside the cave, it would be almost impossible for the prisoner to go back to thinking the prison is his only reality. His imagination of the outside world will always cloud his mind, and he will always wonder what exactly is true. Socrates, a Greek philosopher, question beliefs of his society. Euthyphro is an example of Socrates work. In this example, I think it aims at providing an view of morals, and how holiness and un-holiness are founded based upon these morals. Socrates uses the morals of the Gods to determine what holiness and un-holiness are. I believe the difference between the two is based from societies perception of wrong and right, which will determine if acts are just or unjust. The society usually comes to a majority concluion, or popular consensus on what is considered wrong, for example murder, and acts are taken from there to determine how you will punish som... ... middle of paper ... ...as we love our limbs. He talks bout how as adults, it is good to give to your children your knowledge and reasoning. To teach them love, happiness, kindness and good energy will further them in life. What they do with it is there own responsibility, but to teach them what you know is good. He mentions that we should not harness all of our knowledge for our children, but also for everyone amongst us. Nozick talks about his philosophy when it comes to wealthy families bequeathing inheritances to this children, and how this can be a dangerous act because it is a form of dominance and power. I completely agree with this philosophy. While money will help your child at some things, knowledge is always more pristine. The ability to have relationships, and to enhance your children’s knowledge of the world is a far better inheritance than the dissipating value of money.
What is reality? An enduring question, philosophers have struggled to identify its definition and basic concept since the beginning of time. Plato, in his provocative essay, The Cave, used symbols and images to ridicule and explain how humanity easily justifies their current reality while showing us that true wisdom and enlightenment lies outside this fabricated version of reality. If he were alive in modern times, he would find society unchanged; still uneducated and silently trapped in our own hallucination of reality with only the glimmer of educational paths available. The main concept behind Plato’s Allegory of the cave is to show how individuals perceive the world due to factors such as education. Throughout the video, Plato’s main consensus is strictly focused on the changes that an individual experiences after he or she is exposed to the philosophical reasoning behind a situation, rather than mere interpretations. This can be seen in the opening and middle portions of the video. The video starts with all three prisoners being tied up looking in a dark cave, simply seeing shadows and hearing echoes of ongoing events that are happening outside the cave. In Plato’s Allegory of The Cave, prisoners are kept since child birth in a dark cave, they are only able to see nothing but shadow figures move on the wall of the cave. They perceive that as their true reality since that is all they have known all their life. A prisoner breaks free from his shackles and is blinded by the light of the sun. He realized that his reality in the cave was not real, he sees people and understands what reality is now. The prisoner goes back to explain to the others what he has seen but they don’t believe him because they believed in their own reality.

Generally, Plato, Thoreau, and Sartre suggested that human life should be free. They differ in what that freedom is. Plato thinks it is found in the world of intellect, Thoreau thinks freedom is found in nature, and Sartre thinks freedom is found in subjectivity of individual.
In "The Allegory of the Cave," prisoners in a cave are forced to watch shadows as people behind them are forced to accept these shadows as reality -- "To them... the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images. One prisoner, however, is released, and stumbles into the real world, containing more depth and complexity than they had ever known. At first, the prisoner will be pained at the bright, piercing light, but will eventually recover. According to Plato, the freed prisoner is then obligated to return to the shadows of the cave, to inform the shackled prisoners left behind of the real world. The prisoners, however, will not believe the freed prisoner, and may even go as afra s to kill him for such "lies" contrary to their "reality." The pursuit of the truth is, therefor, a painstaking but rewarding process. According to Plato, the physical world is a world of sight, one that lacks meaning if left alone. Only those who manage to break into the sunlight from the cave will ascend to the intellectual world. The prisoners in the shadows only know of the dull physical world, while those who ascend into the sunlight learn of the spiritual world, and are exposed to the first hints of truth. The soul ascends upward into the realm of goodness and of the truth, where "... souls are ever hastening into the upper world where they desire to dwell.." The pursuit of goodness and of the truth, then, improves the soul, as the soul desires to be elevated to a higher state of knowledge and morality. Caring for the self and the soul involves freeing the shackles of the physical world and ascending to the "... world of knowledge... the universal author of all things beautiful and right... and the immediate source of reason and truth in the intellectual..." In The Euthyphro, Socrates uses his Socratic Method to disprove the Divine Command theory to his friend, Euthyphro. According to the textbook, the Socratic Method is a method that Socrates would use to get to the foundation of his students beliefs. He would ask continual questions about a student’s belief or assumption until a contradiction was raised. By doing so, Socrates would force his students to question their own beliefs and truly discern why they believed them. Socrates applied this method to Euthyphro when Socrates and Euthyphro had a conversation in regards to the definition of holiness. The “Allegory of the Cave” by Plato is showing how philosophers can be perceived and treated in society. Plato wrote this to draw attention to how small human perception can be to change and new things. The prisoners can’t turn their heads or even move at all. Then one gets free and sees the world by exploring, but he remembers the others in the cave and tries to untie them and show them the world. Despite what the prisoner has told them about the world, they don’t want to leave because they believe he has gone mad.
