What is reality? An enduring question, philosophers have struggled to identify its definition and basic concept since the beginning of time. Plato, in his provocative essay, The Cave, used symbols and images to ridicule and explain how humanity easily justifies their current reality while showing us that true wisdom and enlightenment lies outside this fabricated version of reality. If he were alive in modern times, he would find society unchanged; still uneducated and silently trapped in our own hallucination of reality with only the glimmer of educational paths available. Strictly entertainment in its finest sense, Plato would be appalled to find the number of ‘reality’ TV shows that draw millions of viewers and experience almost cult-like followings. Watching a show that depicts a glamorous lifestyle with little or no regard for rules is identical to those prisoners who were chained to observe the shadows upon the wall believing them to be real. Even the name, ‘reality’ television, is indistinguishable from the shadows viewed by the cave dwellers. “Then in every way such prisoners would deem reality to be nothing else than the shadows of the artificial objects.” (paragraph 13) There are many more offerings on television that Plato would find amusing, but nothing more laughable than a video game. Comparable to the prisoners of the cave, while engaged in a gaming activity, gamers do not move from their forward-facing view nor do their bodies turn away from the screen. Video games require a great deal of concentration, a vast amount of time and any outside interference is largely ignored. The focus of the game, like the prisoner in the cave, is strictly on the shadows of images passing in front of them. Video games are now so completely realistic, that it is hard to tell whether you are witnessing live actions or actually participating in them - the fine line between reality and fantasy has become completely indistinguishable. Countless studies have shown that participating and witnessing this behavior in games corresponds to more aggressive behavior in life and a lack of empathy for the actual suffering of humanity. Participating in video game play may seem real, but like the cave prisoners, this interaction is nothing but an illusion. Video game play is precisely graphic trickery and as Plato writes it “was all a cheat and an illusion.” (paragraph 15) Researchers, however, have found that gaming may not be completely bad for adolescents. A recent study by Paul J.C. Adachi and Teena Willoughby points out that video gaming may satisfy the same criteria for positive youth development as traditional organized activities such as sports, music or clubs. In direct contrast to this analogy, they demonstrate that there may be significant social benefits of gaming, that adolescents are motivated to play video games and that this type of play requires concentration and mental effort (Adachi and
Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” explains his beliefs on education of one’s soul and the core of the way they shape themselves. The rhetorical devices that Plato represents inside of his story explains how much freedom is worth in this world. The deeper meaning inside of what Plato describes can further be found out once a reader realizes the type of rhetorical devices are being used. For example, Plato portrays prisoners being locked inside of a cave without a way out. These prisoners never got to see the outside world, yet he mentions they “see shadows” which explains they are only able to catch a glimpse of reality from the outside. In Plato’s “The Allegory of the Cave,” he suggests that there are two different forms of vision, a “mind’s eye” and a “bodily eye.” The “bodily eye” is a metaphor for the senses. While inside the cave, the prisoners function only with this eye. The “mind’s eye” is a higher level of thinking, and is mobilized only when the prisoner is released into the outside world. This eye does not exist within the cave; it only exists in the real, perfect world.
Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" presents a vision of humans as slaves chained in front of a fire observing the shadows of things on the cave wall in front of them. The shadows are the only "reality" the slaves know. Plato argues that there is a basic flaw in how we humans mistake our limited perceptions as reality, truth and goodness. The allegory reveals how that flaw affects our education, our spirituality and our politics.
The Allegory of the Cave is Plato's explanation of the education of the soul toward enlightenment. He sees it as what happens when someone is educated to the level of philosopher. He contends that they must "go back into the cave" or return to the everyday world of politics, greed and power struggles. The Allegory also attacks people who rely upon or are slaves to their senses. The chains that bind the prisoners are the senses. The fun of the allegory is to try to put all the details of the cave into your interpretation. In other words, what are the models the guards carry? the fire? the struggle out of the cave? the sunlight? the shadows on the cave wall? Socrates, in Book VII of The Republic, just after the allegory told us that the cave was our world and the fire was our sun. He said the path of the prisoner was our soul's ascent to knowledge or enlightenment. He equated our world of sight with the intellect's world of opinion. Both were at the bottom of the ladder of knowledge. Our world of sight allows us to "see" things that are not real, such as parallel lines and perfect circles. He calls this higher understanding the world "abstract Reality" or the Intelligeble world. He equates this abstract reality with the knowledge that comes from reasoning and finally understanding. On the physical side, our world of sight, the stages of growth are first recognition of images (the shadows on the cave wall) then the recognition of objects (the models the guards carry) To understand abstract reality requires the understanding of mathematics and finally the forms or the Ideals of all things (the world outside the cave). But our understanding of the physical world is mirrored in our minds by our ways of thinking. First comes imagination (Socrates thought little of creativity), then our unfounded but real beliefs. Opinion gives way to knowledge through reasoning (learned though mathematics). Finally, the realization of the forms is mirrored by the level of Understanding in the Ways of Thinking. The key to the struggle for knowledge is the reasoning skills acquired through mathematics as they are applied to understanding ourselves. The shadows on the cave wall change continually and are of little worth, but the reality out side the cave never changes and that makes it important.
Freedom in mind, freedom in nature, and freedom in subjectivity of individual are three kinds of freedoms. However, freedom should be expressed within the limits of reason and morality. Having freedom equals having the power to think, to speak, and to act without externally imposed restrains. As a matter of fact, finding freedom in order to live free is the common idea in Plato with "The Allegory of the Cave"; Henry David Thoreau with " Where I lived and What I lived for"; and Jean Paul Sartre with " Existentialism". Generally, Plato, Thoreau, and Sartre suggested that human life should be free. They differ in what that freedom is. Plato thinks it is found in the world of intellect, Thoreau thinks freedom is found in nature, and Sartre thinks freedom is found in subjectivity of individual.
Although many forms of philosophical entries have shed light in Hollywood, Plato’s Allegory of the Cave is most vividly seen in the movie Inception. The theme of understanding reality in Inception, can be related to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. In the motion picture, the main character Dom Cobb deceives his victims by trapping them in “dreamboxes,” similar to the chains in the allegory. Along the way, these victims believe that the world they are dreaming of is reality, a parallel to the shadows that are casted by the puppeteers in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. Furthermore, signs of the truth (noumenal realm) outside the characters limited knowledge (phenomenal realm) is presented in various forms throughout the movie, however, the actors in Inception refuse to believe what these individuals have to say, quite identically to the Allegory of the Cave’s interpretation of a prisoner’s return back to the cave after experiencing what the true source of the prisoners interpretations have been all along.

Dualism is the idea of a world made up of material things, such as the physical form and immaterial things, such as the mind, but that do not necessarily depend on each other to exist. This glimpse into Plato’s teachings will include an explanation of the “Allegory of the Cave,” and some thoughts on whether dualism exists or Plato is wrong in his claim that reality is beyond the material world.
In the contemporary world , culture refers to something as vast as the distinctive way of life of an entire community. Culture is everywhere and everyone has it; it is the mass of ideas, traditions, habits, stories, beliefs, and perspectives on life passed on to us from generation to generation through literature, language, art, myth, religion, family, and various other social institutions. Plato had many different ideas when it comes to human behavior and philosophy. Some of those things can be applied to today’s society, some of them can’t. Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, which is probably his most famous theory, as well as Krishnamurti’s essay on cultural conditioning of a mind, they both focus on cultural values and living within a culture and can still be seen in today’s society.

To sum up, Plato’s allegory of cave depicts the human condition, each of us is a prisoner chained down with distorted illusion of reality. To gain individual autonomy one must awaken the unconsciousness, we must kill our imperfection and liberate one’s senses. We cannot accomplish individual autonomy by watching what’s on the screen, but rather using our own consciousness, begin a Gnostic path, and enlightened each other, hence we can build our own philosophical ideologies and get out of the ignorance, that is the cave.
Whether it’s in the news, TV shows, or movies, it’s happening all the time. It also happens in our everyday personal lives. We get caught in a routine and keeping doing it and it bothers us if that routine is broken or that someone tells us that we should stop doing that daily routine. Plato wants us to look beyond the cave to see what is around us and what is real, not the fake reality that the world sometimes projects. Like Cooper in Interstellar, he stepped outside the “cave” to find a hope for humanity, and at the same time found the tesseract, or the outside of the “cave” again, and found the knowledge he needed to help his daughter figure out the gravity equation and save humanity from dying out.
