Imagine going into hiding for many years, not being allowed to talk louder than a whisper with only a diary as a friend. That happened to Anne Frank and through her diary, we can understand societal challenges that happened when she was alive. Diaries can be used as a way for people to share their thoughts about what is going on and help connect with others. Diaries can also be used to provide first-hand information about events that have happened. Considering how easy it is to get a feel for the tone, and vivid first-person details, diaries are the best medium to help understand societal challenges. in Anne Frank’s diary, she writes “I feel terribly upset. I couldn’t tear myself away while Miep told these dreadful stories…” (Frank 39). In that section, phrases such as dreadful, terribly or tear me away, words like that can help elicit a negative connotation. Through connotation and vivid descriptions the reader can become immersed and really understand the struggle. However, diaries can also show the happy times. Anne Frank wrote, “ We ping-sponges are very partial to ice cream, especially in the summer, when one gets warm at the game, so we usually finish up with a visit to the nearest ice-cream shop, Delphi or Oasis, where Jews are allowed.” (Frank 5). In this sentence, it shows to the reader the happier times of living back then, but also provides a very important tidbit about life for a Jew in Germany. The phrase “... nearest ice-cream shop, Delphi or Oasis, where Jews are allowed.” (Frank 5) shows that before the war really even began there was still discrimination against the Jews. All of these details can also help the reader connect to the text and really imagine themselves there as well. In addition to helping the reader understand the tone, diaries can also provide helpful first-person details.
Such as the exact date of when something happened to them. For example, Anne Frank writes, “ Super news of the invasion. The Allies have taken Bayeux, a small village on the french coast, and are now fighting for Caen. It’s obvious that they intend to cut off the peninsular where Cherbourg lies.” (Frank 246). In this passage, Anne Frank gives the big news of the day and explains in so it is easy to comprehend. She also explains it from her eyes, not from an outsider's perspective. Diaries can also provide interesting tidbits that someone back then could have found interesting. Anne Frank states in her diary, “ In his time Liszt was not only the greatest and most famous pianist but also the greatest ladies man-- right up to the age of seventy.” (Frank 247) So as you can see, diaries show first person details, that you can not find in other …show more content…
mediums. I am aware that others may believe that diaries are inaccurate.
They might believe this because, diaries tend to be more opinionated than, the more factual non-fiction texts. However, these opinions allow for a more personal look into a life back then. In addition, other mediums such as allegories, might not be clear enough to understand how serious a situation might be. Another text such as a poem would be helpful with the mood and tone, but it won’t give any information about what happened. Finally, people may argue that diaries may not be able to tell some facts but often an author's note at the end will fill in any missing information. In conclusion, diaries are the best text to understand societal challenges because it will provide first-hand information and elicit more feelings. Diaries can show emotions and can give a voice to people who may not have one. Diaries can spread ideas and help people channel their thoughts and energy. These thoughts and energy go into a text that if published can help others understand societal
challenges.

Do you remember when your sister used to write in her diary and how curious you were on finding out what she wrote in it? If you didn’t have a sister – do you remember keeping your own diary hoping that your mom would not find it one day and read it? At a young age, we all learn to keep a diary or journal. In elementary school, we may have been required to write in a journal in class replying to a question asked by the teacher like “How was your weekend?” or “How was your break?” Simple questions were asked to help generate ideas in our young minds and help us write our own story. But now that we are older, do we still have the opportunity to write our own story the same way we used to? Are we still able to release our emotions and reflect on events in our lives? Though many people see keeping a journal as childish or a waste of time, the effects of recording ones thoughts are beneficial.
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl was a very distressing yet amazingly written book. Who would have thought that such a little person could have such a huge effect on the world? Anne?s father lived for many years after the war and made sure that Anne?s diary was published. Her diary was published in 1947 and was then made into a film. This diary helps people remember what Jews had to go through and hopefully reminds them of how lucky they are. By remembering, it is hoped that something like this will never happen again. This book was intriguing while incorporating many life lessons. Discrimination, unfair judgment, and racism are only a few of the many lessons that this book has to offer. With that, after reading this book, we have learned to not take the things we have for granted because in a matter of seconds, days, months, or even years, it could all be gone. As Anne said in her diary, ?In spite of everything, I still believe, people are truly good at heart?.
