Narrative Statement As I envision my future, the first thing that comes to mind is being a social worker. There is nothing more I would rather pursue in my life plans. Any other career choice seems pale in comparison as I feel this is the right fit for me. When I was 16 years old, I received a devastating phone call. What I thought would be a phone call of my grandpa on the other line telling me how much he loves his “little granddaughter,” it was him telling me his diagnoses of lung cancer-stage 3A. An overwhelming tightness in my chest occurred as I was trying to catch my breath and wrap my head around the news I heard. My grandpa was extremely dear to me. He was my very first friend, my best friend, and the one who taught me how to ride a bike and swim. He also taught me to be nice to others, judge no one, and have respect for my self and every individual. …show more content…

This life is given to us with the intent for humans to help each other strive and the purpose to serve. With social work, certain characteristics are needed. Social work comes with many trials and tribulations as well as rewards. I believe that I posses characteristics that may help me succeed as a social worker. These characteristics include, my ability to listen to others, have empathy, courage, and strength. As a social worker, one must be able to listen carefully and have active listening, which aids in establishing trust and help understand each individual’s circumstance. My ability to express empathy for another individual is a strong characteristic of mine. All my life, I have been very empathetic for others and my friends and family. I have always been the person that my friends will go to talk, vent, or for advice because I have such an empathetic response allowing me to feel with the individual, understand, and have
