Social Work is a profession for the Brave hearted. A profession that requires authenticity, dedication, and perseverance while seeking to obtain short and long-term goals. Social Workers are change agents who advocate against biased, and unjust individuals, and systems. They seek to challenge social inequalities and are determined to obtain equity, and social justice for individuals, groups and communities that have been oppressed, marginalized, and are vulnerable. They are mandated to protect and come to the aid of those in need and in harm. I’ve always had a passion to help, and it brings me an abundance of gratification to have the opportunity to pursue a career that is solely dedicated to helping others. During the Bachelor of Social Work program at Wayne State University, I have learned a strong core foundation of knowledge pertaining to the Social Work profession. I have learned the significance of maintaining the professional standards detailed in the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics. Yet, one thing that I have learned is the importance of time management. I have become more organized which has increased my overall effectiveness. By having a set schedule to adhere to it allows me the opportunity to efficiently handle my personal responsibilities. I have endured a multitude of significant learning experiences while pursuing my Bachelor’s of Social Work. One of the most life-changing Social Work experience that I endured during my practicum was dealing with an irate resident at the homeless shelter. The individual was irate, and discouraged on if she would be able to regain custody of her daughter.
