Social Work Reflection

There were two things I learned about the social work practice by being at Big Brothers Big Sisters that I was unaware of. I learned just how important the assessment process is. BBBS does a great job utilizing the assessment process. After every initial interview, the match coordinator would type up an assessment to ensure that they are matching the “Bigs” and “Littles” with the perfect match. I was lucky enough to be able to actually write some assessments, so it was great experience for myself. Assessments are so important because it not only allows us to get to know our clients, but we also get the chance to see how they are doing at working towards his or her goals. Overall, I truly learned the value of assessments.

I always knew that I wanted to work with people, and leaning more about the social work profession made it more evident that this is what I want to do. I am a caring, understanding, yet tough individual. I especially would love to work with women who have experienced some type of abuse because I have a personal experience with that, and I truly would love nothing more than to be an advocate for these women. Many of the social work core values are values that my mother has taught me throughout my life, so I guess social work is kind of a natural calling for me. I am a determined person, and I would love nothing more than to impact a person’s life for the better. I know that many people are not going to be happy that they are seeing a social worker; however, I will never stop giving up on them.
