The Breakfast Club is a cult classic film from the eighties that centers around five teenagers in high school and their Saturday spent in detention. The movie is completely centered around the social interactions of the five characters and the blooming of their unlikely friendship during their detention. This development is the source of a majority of the plot points, as there is not much action or outside based plot points within the film. Due to the heavy focus on social interaction, various social psychology principles and theories are quite prominent within the film. Stereotyping is at the very heart of the film and several plot points revolve around these social psychology principles, but also aspects such as the social identity theory are important in the film. Stereotypes are portrayed in a rather negative manner, in Brian’s famous narration at the beginning of the film he states that they were “brainwashed” due to how they viewed each other before seven that morning. This seems to fit with how society tends to view stereotypes, even though we rely on our social schemas in similar ways without even being totally aware of it. The portrayal of social identity theory is also very effective, despite only being a major point in one scene. It created interesting conflict within the characters, considering that they wanted to be friends but realized that it would prove difficult within the social structure of their school lives. Stigma is the first sociology concept we will discuss in the movie The Breakfast Club.
The 1985 film, The Breakfast Club, directed by John Hughes shows how a person’s identity can be influenced by conflict he or she has experienced in life. First, John Bender is in the library telling everyone how he got a cigar burn on his arm from his dad. For example, his mother and father don’t treat with the most respect or any respect at all. They call him names and say he can’t do anything right. One day him and his dad got into a really bad argument and his dad burnt him with is cigar that he had. Because his parents treat him that way, he treats everyone he’s around very badly.
The stereotypes used in the film are mostly about the cultures as a whole. For the Japanese it was that their culture is collectivistic, which means they put more importance on the success of the group instead of the success of each individual. Breakfast Club film contained a wide variety of behavior and stereotypes. Each person had their on personality and taste at the beginning of the film. I believe that communication played the biggest part in the movie. It shows the way that people from totally different backgrounds can communicate and even agree on issues. The various types of communication and behaviors within the film will be discussed.
The Breakfast Club, showed viewers how people from all economic backgrounds have something in common. From the very beginning of the film, as each student is dropped of for detention, the assumption about what these kid’s home life is like, what type of child they are and what social class they come from is established. When the kids are sitting in the library, where they sit even screams social standing. Claire and Andy sit next to each other because, from what we can tell, they are in the same standing. The hierarchy is started right from the beginning. The other kids all choose seats behind them. This shows that the popular, upper class, come first, everyone else is under them.

The movie The Breakfast Club is a perfect example of peer relationships in the adolescent society. It shows the viewer some of the main stereotypes of students in high school you have a jock, a nerd, the weirdo, a rebel, and a prep. Over the course of a Saturday detention the different types of peers learn a lot about one another by hearing what each one has done to get into Saturday detention as well as why they chose to do it.
Identity is a substantial component of a person, it’s something that determines who they are and help establish themselves with people who you find enjoyable and shares similar interests. It could bring people together, and provide a sense of belonging and unity. However, there are times where these people who are within certain cliques are perceived more negatively or believe that all people within that group perpetually have a certain set of traits. While watching this movie I noticed many social psychology concepts throughout. I have never paid attention to these concepts when watching the movie before, so it was interesting to pay close attention and see how many came up. The movie displays foot-in-the door technique, social facilitation, deindividuation, ingroup, scapegoat theory, among many others. Being a very real and honest movie, it is easy to understand why so many social psychology concepts are present. Our textbook defines social psychology to be, “the scientific field that seeks to understand the nature and causes of individual behavior, feelings and thought in social situation” (Baron & Branscombe, 2012). There are many strong characters within the movie, and they display these concepts.
Social Psychology is the study of how we think and relate to other people. These psychologists focused on how the social situation influences others behavior. We see social influences everywhere we go, but might not notice it. Like when watching a movie for fun you do not notice it as much as when you are actually looking for the behaviors, like in the film The Breakfast Club. There are several examples of social psychological behaviors in the film.
John Hughes both wrote and directed the classic movie The Breakfast Club. The film is lighthearted, but it also carries out a significant meaning, which I believe to be equality. High school students, in particular, could relate to this 80s film; however, the message could apply to all human beings in this world. Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald are just a few of the incredible actors that teamed up in order to make this movie happen. With their wonderful adaptation to a high school setting, they gave an amazing, memorable performance that will be remembered for decades.
In the movie The Breakfast Club, five seemingly different adolescents are assigned Saturday detention where they learn that although they each fit a particular stereotype, they all have the same characteristics, but they are expressed differently because they have different experiences, strengths and weaknesses that makes them who they are. In the movie, Bender is the “criminal”, Brian is the “brain” and Allison is the “psychopath.” Each of their situations, strengths and weakness are similar to students that are in our classrooms currently or we may have in our classrooms in the future. For each student it is important to understand their learning differences and as a teacher, how I can use their strengths to help them become successful students.
In conclusion, society shapes our perspective on people which classifies them into various social groups. Each defined by different characteristics that can be physical, ideological or ethnical. This leads to a discrimination of them for their difference traits. For this reason in the novel social groups are represented in particular ways so the audience can reflect over stereotypical issues.
The breakfast club is an American comedy and drama film which was written and produced by John Hughes. It talks of an experience gone through by five students in a library at New Trier High School; the school went to by the child of one of John Hughes' companions (Kaye, 2001). In this way, the individuals who were sent to detainment before school beginning time were assigned individuals from "The Breakfast Club".
