Tweeting. Texing. Liking. Following. These words are used now more than ever because of the availability and popularity of social media. Fifty, twenty, and even ten years ago wifi and handheld phones were unusual concepts. Social media has one of the biggest effects on humanity today because it brings numerous people together and allows many to reconnect but can also be dangerous with hackers stealing personal information and cyber bullying. Young people and old folks it would seem are not using social media for the same reasons, but in reality they are because they are using it to connect with others. Aaron smith in Source C stated, ”Roughly two thirds of social media users say that staying in touch with current friends and family members”. …show more content…
The article in Source D explains several risks associated with the internet and social media with a few being anonymity and fake “friends”. Sometimes imposters can get more information out of users than is safe. Passwords, addresses, and social security numbers can be stolen by coercing the information out of an uncareful user. Hackers can get a hold of accounts and post comments contrary to account owners’ beliefs. Kidnappings can also happen when internet “friends” meet in person and one turns out not to be what was portrayed. Another growing concern among teens is Cyberbully. In Source A, Stephanie Pappas explains that cyber bullying is linked to depression. Many teens are victims of cyber bullying because social media is so popular and everything nowadays can be anonymous. Because of this suicide rates are increasing and depression is more common. With increasing use of social media, many negative effects are popping up such as depression and cyber bullying as well as hackers getting their hands on private information. Humanity is being greatly affected by these diseases and infections that keep on spreading through every household
Students post tons of media about themselves or other people at school. According to Document A states that the more students go on social media the more depressed they become. Document A also states that teens also follow their enemies
In the year 2016 almost everyone applying to a school or business has a social media account. College admission offices and businesses have the ability to check applicant’s social media before they accept them into their school or business. But they should not be looking at social media because it does not give an accurate portrayal of the person applying.
It can be extremely damaging to young adolescents. Many middle schoolers are already going through new changes that may be stressful, their bodies are changing as they go through puberty and they are starting to care more about their appearance. They are also experiencing new emotional changes and many face feelings of low self esteem and insecurities throughout these years. They are also experiencing new social changes and pressures and are very prone to displaying strong emotions. They also may face new frustrations and feelings of anxiety as they go through hormonal changes. Many are also concerned about the opinion and acceptance of their peers. Cyber bullying which may be visible to others online can be very hard on a young adolescent. It has an affect on the mental health adolescents. Cyber bullying can become a serious stressor on students in middle school. “Adolescents who are targeted via cyber bullying report increased depressive affect, anxiety, loneliness, suicidal behavior and somatic symptoms.” (Nixon, 2014, pg. 145) News stories recently have covered reports on suicide of middle schoolers who took their own life due to the trauma of cyber bullying. Many argue that cyber bullying may have connection to thoughts about suicide. “The results revealed that both targets and perpetrators of cyberbullying were more likely to think about suicide, as well as attempt suicide when compared to
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
haven't seen, and keep them updated on your day to day life. The Internet has become an important part of our lives, especially social media. I disagree with the idea that you can make real friends on the Internet because it's not safe and it does not provide basic needs that sustain a friendship.
Brooks (2015) states that social media negatively affects efficiency and well-being. The participants took a survey to find out how much different types of social media affects users and how much time is being spent on them. Brooks (2015) explains that social media usage creates lower task performance, increased technostress, and lower happiness levels. Technostress is a stress or negative impact that technology has on you whether it be not being able to work your technology or not understanding the information. They often breathe heavily and will feel as if they are out of control.
Some of the effects of using social media can be depression, addiction, cyberbullying, and exposure to inappropriate content. One of the most concerning effects of social media is depression. When teens create an online identity, they often display an unauthentic self. This “other” self is often what the person wants to be. Having to jump from the online self to the real self can often lead to depression.
The internet is extremely vast and the multitudes of people of the world have access to it. Now it has evolved into phones, so now it can be in the palm of our hand. This has given us faster ways to gain contact with others, and various different ways to do so as well. Social media is a satisfactory example of the faster contact we have. Since social media is on the internet many have access to this as well, including colleges and employers.
I find social media a perfect way to stay in the loop of what is going on with my friends. Although Eva likes to post pictures of her favorite celebrities, I enjoy using twitter to stay up to date on my favorite sports teams and players. We all can agree that although we do not post selfies or constantly update social media on what we are doing at that very moment, we enjoy benefits social media gives us.
“We barely have time to pause and reflect these days on how far communicating through technology has progressed. Without even taking a deep breath, we’ve transitioned from email to chat to blogs to social networks and more recently to twitter” (Alan 2007). Communicating with technology has changed in many different ways. We usually “get in touch” with people through technology rather than speaking with them face to face. The most popular way people discuss things, with another individual, is through our phones. Phones have been around way before I was born in 1996, but throughout the years, they have developed a phone called a “smart phone”. The smart phone has all kinds of new things that we can use to socialize with our peers. On these new phones, we can connect with our friends or family on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Technology has also developed Skype, a place you can talk with people on the computer with instant voice and video for hours. The new communication changes have changed drastically from the new advances made in technology through our smart phones, social networking sites, and Skype.
ISIS uses media greatly in getting their messages out to the world. There usage of media has been effective for its organization thus far, as it has radicalized many individuals. It has impacted our society negatively; we have experienced many recent backlashes as a result of ISIS using media to spread their messages. ISIS is using media as its primary tool to get their message out because this type of tool allows them to release not only words, but also extremist videos and pictures. Words are a powerful way to send messages out across the world.
As time flies, the world was changed. It is quite common to see people walking and talking on the cell phones all of world. But it was impossible over the last two to three decades. People can get the information about buses from the electronic bus-stop boards in major cities. They also can book Amtrak and airplanes’ tickets online. This is a new world. In other words, this word is called “Digital world”. A lot of people contact their friends via some social apps like Facebook, Twitter, Wechat, QQ and LINE. In fact, a lot of social apps’ users are teenager and young people. Sometimes those teenager and young people, who were born after 1980 (Digital world) and had long access to tech, digital and Internet, are called “Digital Native”. Some people thought that the digital world was bad thing. Another believed that the digital things made life easier than before. In my opinion, I am a digital native and I like the new world-the digital world because this world helps me get the easier life. I also believe that the digital world is better than before.
“When you look at why this is happening and what some of the factors may be, we only need to look at today's world and the amount of pressures teenagers face: Bullying, issues of belonging, academic pressures . . . these factors can lead to enormous stress,” said by Gary Blau. (Albernaz) Mental depression is an illness that many people face, and it is increasing in the country because of the hardships many people face. Social media is an aspect of life that can either harm or help a person with depression.
There are about one and a half billion users of social media worldwide. It can be used to meet new people, find old friends, chat the day away, join interest groups, or even to share pictures. Social networks were mostly created so people could meet and find new friends. What most users of social media don't know, are the dangers of using social media. One example is when you meet a person online, because they are not always who they say they are. If someone is not who you may think they are, who could they be? They can be a stalker or a person that wants to steal your identity; which could be done easily thanks to new developments of new technology. Also thanks to new technology it is now easier for people using your information to track you. Posting personal information can risk your family and friends lives. Social media can be used as a weapon against you. It can even lead to a kidnapping, or even someone's death. Many people use social media to help to waste time, but could also become an unhealthy addiction. Also social media can damage your future. When you are a teen you tend to post pretty much anything you want. This is dangerous because you can post too much personal information. What most teens don't realize is that what they do on social media now can affect them for the rest of their life. It can even come back to haunt you in the future. Social media is dangerous because it makes it easier to be stalked, identity theft to happen, kidnappings and murders, and also can ruin your future.
Depression can negatively affect the way a person feels, thinks, and acts. This is why being depressed can have a negative effect on a persons’ academics. The person may not be able to effectively answer questions on tests and exams because they are overcome with a great sense of sadness. Thus, they could fail even though they might have studied because their mind was warped due to the depression. Social media can play a big part in a lot of teens depression because of the content on these sites. Things like cyberbullying which is one of the leading causes of depression is ever present on social media sites. Although students may not be depressed by using social media themselves they might become this way by seeing those who are depressed spread their emotions across social media. According to De Choudhury who is an assistant professor at Georgia Institute of Technology,” Major Depressive Disorder is characterized by episodes of all-encompassing low mood accompanied by low self-esteem, and loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities. It is also well-established that people suffering from MDD tend to focus their attention on unhappy and unflattering information” (1). This gives evidence on how being depressed can have a bad impact on students’ performance because instead of feeling motivated to do well in school and achieve greatness, the
