Social media is a group of electronic platforms that people can post pictures for other people to see. It was invented for people to connect with each others that they cannot see every day. The horrible truth is that social media is ruining people’s self esteem and causing mental health issues. I believe that although there are many good uses of social media we can all agree that the negatives outweigh the positives. Some people think that social media is a good way to vent out your emotions and but I think that this essay will change your mind. Some of the ways people can hack in to our account or even get your information without hacking include: catfishing, phishing and logging into our accounts via pour easily findable emails, usernames etc. Catfishing is when you pretend that you are someone else to lure someone into telling their information. There are many catfishing accounts on every social media account Kim Lacapria from Social Daily News states “83 million Facebook accounts are fake or duplicate in nature.” (LaCapria March 23 2013). Also, according to nextshark.com one in every ten online dating site accounts are fake. Finally, according to datingadvice.com 53% of online dating accounts are fabricated to make themselves seem better. My next point is phishing. Phishing is when you try to take someones information. Often phishers send a link to someone, this link normally hacks their account and takes their information. Marika Samarati from government states that there is an average 400 000 phishing websites are viewed every month. Because of social media and its users description of a “perfect life” it is making people feel worse about theirs. Some effects of social media are depression, thoughts of self harm and suicide, and finally anxiety. Depression is a mental health disease that negatively affect how you act, how you think and how you feel. In many cases social media can be linked to depression Jeff Nalin from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America states “When teenagers scroll through their newsfeed, it's easy for them to think that all of their friends and classmates are perfect, making them feel left out.” (Nalin) The more people on Social media the higher depression rates. According to a survey conducted by psychnews.com people that use seven of the eleven big social media platforms are three times more likely. psycom.com states that the depression rates in adolescents has gone up almost 3% from 2005 to 2014. Next there is self harm and/or suicide, this is when you have bad mental health and decide to take your own life. The Associated Press of New York Post states “Teens’ use of electronic devices including smartphones for at least five hours daily more than doubled, from 8 percent in 2009 to 19 percent in 2015. These teens were 70 percent more likely to have suicidal thoughts or actions than those who reported one hour of daily use.” (Associated press, Nov 14, 2017) This proves that social media is linked with suicide and
