Social media is ruining our love lives with many who will do anything in this world for us. The biggest reason this is happening is because we are spending more time with our phone than those that are very close to us. We as humans are so addicted to our phones that the upcoming teens don't really know how to approach someone in person because they have been on the phone meeting people for so long. Many of people also get addicted to attention which can bring on many more problems than just relationship and family. Also the more time you find yourself spending on social media the more you will distance yourself from your family and friends only to grow closer to someone you met on an app. Relying on an app to meet someone new is very dangerous, when meeting someone on an app people can pretend to be someone they really …show more content…
Seventy percent of students report seeing bullying on the internet more than do in person. This makes students feel like they aren't important anymore because you hear many stories every day about students getting bullied. Many students think if they do it over their phone the victim isn't going to let anyone know. Which in some cases they don't, and try to handle it themselves but many of times they will not be able to handle all the stress and then try to commit suicide. Twenty percent of students think of suicide because of cyberbullying and one out of ten actually attempt suicide. Suicide rates of teens are rising more and more each year. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S. today and if we don't do something about social media it is going to keep arising. Cyberbullying is one of the top reasons of suicide and if social media wasn't a part of this world we would more than likely have lower rates for suicides. This is another reason social media shouldn't be apart of this world
Studies also found that 6.4% had intentionally cut bruised or harmed themselves and that 8.1% had though about suicide and 1.3% had actually attempted suicide. This evidence shows that social media is bad for teens and preteens. If social media got banned then there would not be any sort of problem like this.
Social media has changed the way people communicate with each other and in turn, has affected our ability to empathize in both negative and positive ways. One of the most harmful consequences is the rise of cyber-bullying. Another negative issue has been the trend of trolling in comments sections of websites, chat rooms, and other online venues of communication. In spite of this, there have been constructive consequences due to social media such as the ability for family and friends to keep in touch on a regular basis. Because of social media, many people are finding support and resources to help them when they fall on hard times or experience tragedies like death and illness. Overall, social media is an exciting new world that changes as it grows and it will be up to society to utilize it for good.
In a world full of technology, it is tough to escape the grasp of social media as it has been incorporated into our everyday lives. We almost instinctively pull out our cell phones in the middle of a dull conversation and glance at our Instagram feed without a second thought. Many of us are guilty of spending unreasonably large amounts of time without even acknowledging it is a problem. What if these small actions are leading to a misconception of what society should be. In the end, are the risks severe enough for the problems to stop? What if social media is affecting our relationships with others, our grades, and our privacy? In many ways it is. Social media is negatively impacting our generation.
Many people have access to social media daily. Sometimes people do not even think about how much they rely on social media. Many jobs would not exist if it were not for the social media; jobs like computer repair and even the people who created the computer and social media websites would not have jobs. People of today need to take a moment and realize and think about if all this social media use is
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Even though social media can bring you closer to those people, it destroys the relationship with the people who are reachable. It disconnects the user from the reality. Some might oppose by saying that they can learn abundant new things from social media. Social Media is not all about bullying or insulting, but it can be about exploring new things by reading someone else’s blog or posts from a news reporter. You can learn things from it that you have never heard of.
With all of the attention on social media, negative and positive, the media has caused several controversies throughout our nation. People ponder that social media is the reason why there’s bullying, incorrect grammar, and lack of social skills. Though social media can be beneficial, teens need to be extremely careful what they post online. Social Media was created for people to communicate, share information, ideas, and to be entertained. From old time buddies and gals catching up, to just now receiving a friend request from a stranger you don’t know, the media can be beneficial, but dangerous at times.
In conclusion, it becomes very apparent that social media takes away a lot of human contact. Too many people are becoming comfortable talking behind a screen, and are having problems with face to face conversation, which then can lead to social problems in the work field and everywhere else. Since social media is taking away a lot of human contact, and is already causing a lot of problems; as technology advances we have to worry about how social issues are going to increase as well. Social media is just going to keep effecting the way people communicate, and only in a negative way.
Communication plays an important role and becomes an essential part in our daily lives. Today we have taken communication to new level as social media and social networking. They have had a tremendous impacts on the word, on our culture and in business as well. Social media websites are some of the most popular on the internet, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They are the places where people can interact with others easily and expose themselves to strangers. Our generation and the younger ones have more opportunities to grow up with the new development of technology that will shape the way they live of communicating and sharing ideas. The social media causes some problems that lead to less social interaction and negatively affect students academic, but it also brings benefit to people that creates new social connections to bring people from all over the world to be closer.
The first reason why I see social media ruining the lives of teenagers is because students have been getting cyberbullied on a daily basis. When I was 11 years old, a group of girls created a group chat with me in it and started pointing out my every flaw. I was already going through one of the hardest times with my family, but none of those girls knew. Teenagers are clueless so other students lives. No one knows what each other is going through at home. Not to mention, they think that since it is on social media, they won’t get caught or in trouble. If social media/ texting was controlled more, this wouldn’t be such a huge issue.
“First, many targets report feeling depressed, sad, angry, and frustrated.” (Hinduja and Patchin). These are just some of the bad effects that cyber bullying is causing for today’s teens. One of the worse effects of cyber bullying is the link between cyber bullying and suicide. “Finally, cyberbullied youth also report having suicidal thoughts, and there have been a number of examples in the United States and abroad where youth who were victimized ended up taking their own lives.” (Hinduja and Patchin). This alarming fact should be the wakeup call to the U.S. that we need to do something about this problem and fast. Cyber bullying simply does not just hurt someone’s feelings, but it is taking lives of our youth. The first step to help prevent this issue can be to have our schools inform the students of the dangers of cyber bullying. “Furthermore, school district personnel should review their harassment and bullying policies to ensure that it allows for the discipline of students who engage in cyberbullying.” (Hinduja and
Social media has caused a substantial decrease in face-to-face time, stopped people from working effectively, and has caused an increase in bullying. Social media as defined by dictionary.com is “websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts”. People use social media for networking, education, and entertainment. Some of today’s most popular social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Facebook is used as a basic social media site.
Social media has nothing but negative effects on people’s minds. Social networking can become very addicting and people can get wrapped up in the drama and excitement of the cyber world. It would only improve our society today if social media never existed to our knowledge. Our society today feels so connected with social media that it interferes with our lives making every task even harder with the temptations.
Social Media is defined by Merriam-Webster as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)” (Merriam-Webster), and for many Americans is a method of social interaction that is used often on a daily basis. It has been determined that one in five people use social media at least once a day and that 19% of Americans between the age of 15 and 54 are on sites like Facebook and Twitter(). It’s no longer common place to send handwritten letters or birthday cards, now writing on a wall, sending a tweet or snapping a picture is accepted. Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either that. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited.
There are about one and a half billion users of social media worldwide. It can be used to meet new people, find old friends, chat the day away, join interest groups, or even to share pictures. Social networks were mostly created so people could meet and find new friends. What most users of social media don't know, are the dangers of using social media. One example is when you meet a person online, because they are not always who they say they are. If someone is not who you may think they are, who could they be? They can be a stalker or a person that wants to steal your identity; which could be done easily thanks to new developments of new technology. Also thanks to new technology it is now easier for people using your information to track you. Posting personal information can risk your family and friends lives. Social media can be used as a weapon against you. It can even lead to a kidnapping, or even someone's death. Many people use social media to help to waste time, but could also become an unhealthy addiction. Also social media can damage your future. When you are a teen you tend to post pretty much anything you want. This is dangerous because you can post too much personal information. What most teens don't realize is that what they do on social media now can affect them for the rest of their life. It can even come back to haunt you in the future. Social media is dangerous because it makes it easier to be stalked, identity theft to happen, kidnappings and murders, and also can ruin your future.
