Enacting Social Justice Through Education “Education by its very nature should help people to develop their best selves’ (Noddings, 2003, p. 23)”. Melanie Walker in her article, A capital or capabilities education narrative in a world of staggering inequalities?, uses this quote Nel Noddings to articulate what the functionality of schools ought to be. I agree with Noddings that the purpose of education should be to create better citizens who will benefit the common good. But, I think that the key word in her statement is ‘should’. Although, this ‘should’ be the case, the current purposes of schools in the United States is to reproduce the social, economic and cultural hierarchies that the society experiences now. It essential states that all persons should be able to have access and protection of ten capabilities. The capabilities are listed as follows; Life, bodily health, bodily integrity, sense imagination and thought, emotions, political reason, affiliation, other specifies, play and control over one’s environments. She believes that social justice will be achieved when all people have the ability to fulfill all ten capabilities if they so desire. Walker expresses that the enhancement of capabilities should be the role education in our society and that using the capabilities approach to education will help advance social justice and equality. As I became more aware of how much people were treated inhumanely the more disgusted I became. But these feelings sparked a fire under me and has driven me stand up against the injustice and become an agent of change. I feel that though it was emotionally and mentally draining, it forced me to develop a new found awareness. We had to consider what it means to be human in America and why certain people were entitled to this while others are not. This is essential the same idea of the capability approach to education.
