The late 1960’s famously introduced the idea of the “anti-hero”, which is defined as an individual with heroic qualities who is not in the position of an archetypal hero. One such example is the movie Cool Hand Luke, from 1967 starring Paul Newman. The movie surrounds a prisoner named Luke Jackson who refuses to comply or conform to the norms of the prison. The powerful Captain and the mysterious prison guard, whose silver reflecting sunglasses was the inspiration for one of the main prison guards in the popular Stanford prison experiment, tested his acts of defiance. This paper discusses the movie Cool Hand Luke and how the prisoners, Luke and the themes in the film relate to the Social Psychology 1ZO3 course focuses of conformity, non-conformity, and obedience to authority.
In the movie Cool Hand Luke, the other prisoners in the prison often displayed conformist behaviour. Their compliance, which is when the prisoners’ behaviour conformed to the sources request, often ended in unfair treatment to them. One example of this is how one of the prisoners complied to a night in the box even though he clearly did not want to spend his time there. Furthermore, the prisoners were part of the bystander effect, which is when the greater number of bystanders in an emergency, the less likely any one by standing will help. This was exemplified when Dragline was beating Luke up, and none of the many inmates had done anything about this. One explanation of this occurrence is that since Dragline had power –the ability to influence and control the behavior of others, even against their will- over the prisoners, they stood there and did not help. While being a very popular movie in the late 1960s, Cool Hand Luke displays many concepts on the topic of social influence and persuasion, which were discussed in class. Moreover, the movie specifically dealt with the topics conformity, non-conformity and obedience to authority. These topics were shown throughout the movie across the characters, scenes and even the larger themes of the movie. The topics discussed bring up a peculiar sense of reality due to the fact that they were placed in a movie based on reality. The presence of such topics in prisons shed light on the fact that these topics may as easily be found in other institutions such as school.
How could 10 guards keep 50 prisoners under control? In the movie, “Cool Hand Luke”, guards used a variety of methods to control the prison inmates. They use three methods to discipline the inmate’s such as:“the box, leg-chains, and hard work.”
After reading Newjack, I clearly appreciate the difficulty, the chaos and the stress of an officers' job. I am less sure how they manage to do it, and I wonder at what cost to their sense of self it has on them. By contrast, with a few well-chosen stories, Conover humanizes individual prisoners: one who has lines from Anne Frank's diary tattooed on his back; a prisoner on the serving line who tries to sneak extra food to his friends; a young, emotionally needy prisoner grasping for attention from anyone, even an officer. As a result, the prisoners are often drawn “with more humanity” than the staff.
A quintessential element in the preservation of societies social order is a combination of social influences to conform and be obedient. The social influences help to control the individual psyches of entire populations to create a more cohesive environment. Conversely, there are also those who seek to challenge the social controls of society through non-conformity and disobedience. In the article “The Thematic Paradigm” exerted from his book, A Certain Tendency of the Hollywood Cinema, Robert Ray provides a description of the two types of heroes depicted in American film: the outlaw hero and the official hero. Although the outlaw hero is more risky and lonely, he cherishes liberty and sovereignty. The official hero on the other hand, generally poses the role of an average ordinary person, claiming an image of a “civilized person.” While the outlaw hero creates an image of a rough-cut person likely to commit a crime, the official hero has a legend perception. The motion picture A Few Good Men challenges the question of why Marines obey their superiors’ orders without hesitation. The film illustrates a story about two Marines, Lance Corporal Harold W. Dawson and Private First Class Louden Downey charged for the murder of Private First Class William T. Santiago. Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, who is known to be lackadaisical and originally considers offering a plea bargain in order to curtail Dawson’s and Downey’s sentence, finds himself fighting for the freedom of the Marines; their argument: they simply followed the orders given for a “Code Red”. The question of why people follow any order given has attracted much speculation from the world of psychology. Stanley Milgram, a Yale psychologist, conducted an experiment in which randomly selected students were asked to deliver “shocks” to an unknown subject when he or she answered a question wrong. In his article, “The Perils of Obedience”, Milgram concludes anyone will follow an order with the proviso that it is given by an authoritative figure. Two more psychologists that have been attracted to the question of obedience are Herbert C. Kelman, a professor at Harvard University, and V. Lee Hamilton, a professor at the University of Maryland. In their piece, Kelman and Hamilton discuss the possibilities of why the soldiers of Charlie Company slaughtered innocent old men, women, and children. The Marines from the film obeyed the ordered “Code Red” because of how they were trained, the circumstances that were presented in Guantanamo Bay, and they were simply performing their job.
During the movie, I found that these concepts that were taught in class helped me better understand and relate to certain clips of the movie. Throughout the rest of the paper, I will be going into a bit more detail about exactly what these concepts are and mean, following that I will be giving examples from the movie that demonstrate the concepts of conflict and politeness theory.
Inmates and correctional personnel have different views on how treatment should be carried out. Few men are ‘truly’ free and can firmly grasp reality, glorifying themselves as well as others. Beauvoir offers five types of men who are dishonest about their perception of their freedom. These men develop what Beauvoir calls bad faith. The sub-man, serious man, the nihilist, the adventurer, and the passionate man. These types of men are all around us and are often portrayed in movies. This analysis will evaluate the adventurer’s attitude. We shall see under what circumstances a young adventurer declares himself free and explore how he manages his new insight. While Beauvoir claims this man is close to morality, the adventurer is pretentious and ultimately turns into his tyrannical enemy.

A Few Good Men is a movie that adequately causes debate among renowned professors, philosophers, and psychoanalysts. The film demonstrates multiple qualities of commands and power in the military, specifically the Marines. A Few Good Men has an early distinguishable gender distinction, where women are subordinate to men, despite being higher in rank. Marines use a punishment known as a Code Red to discipline any soldier who fails to comply with any and all given orders. Philip G. Zimbardo is a professor at Stanford University who composed the article, “The Stanford Prison Experiment,” in 1973 (Zimbardo 240). Zimbardo’s article covers his experiment which tested college students’ abilities to adapt in either an authoritarian role as a guard or into a submissive role as a prisoner (Zimbardo 243). The guards were quickly subjected to factors, such as boredom, and began to expand their power by harassing the prisoners. The simple experiment swiftly deteriorated into a more realistic prison situation which exemplified the need for the college students to exert their power as guards. Erich Fromm is another prominent author who wrote “Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem” in 1963, shortly after the Cuban missile crisis (Fromm 258). His article mainly discusses obedience; Fromm divides obedience into an authoritarian conscience, obeying out of fear or to please, and humanistic conscience, listening to a person’s own morals and ethics (Fromm 261). Fromm explains rational and irrational authority by stating that rational is to benefit all involved and irrational only benefits the person in charge (Fromm 261). The norms of the prison are held up by sanctions, both by the prisoners and by the violence of the guards. Some examples of these sanctions are the degradation ceremonies established new inmates as inferior, violence by the guards enforcing their power over the prisoners, prisoners act in such a way that these techniques fail, and being sent to solitary confinement. All of these enforce their isolation and works to break them as a human being, reminding them their role as a prisoner and their lack of power.
