Cyber-bullying and anonymous online bashing are an epidemic problem in the 21st century. The use of online communication has integrated into society and counts for a significant portion of human social interactions. According to Pew Research Center, 68% of US adults report using Facebook (Smith and Anderson 2018). A platform such as Facebook incorporates a wide variety of shared ideas and opinions. The societal impacts of online communication are issues worth exploring. There are three variables of the theory that aim to anticipate social conforming behavior; the strength of the influencer, immediacy of the of the situation, and the numbers of influencers. These three variables aid in discovering how individuals are pressured. The pressure is distributed throughout the three variables. For example, if the amount of strength the target group is influencing increases, the group's immediacy will decrease. This concept goes both ways. Latané (1981) tested his theory on multiple studies containing stage fright embarrassment, bystander intervention, conformity and imitation, and tipping. Social influence is the process whereby attitudes and behaviour are influenced by the real or implied presence of other people (Hogg & Vaughan, 2011). There are three types of social influence compliance, obedience, and conformity. This essay will focus on conformity and obedience. These issues will be examined by considering classic studies and contemporary implications.
This essay concerns social influence in general. Aspects of social influence as such as majority influence and minority influence will be discussed in terms of their underlying psychological processes and how they differ. Majority influence or conformity refers to the desire to belong or to fit in within a particular group which involves adopting certain attributes, behaviour and attitudes of a particular group. As a result individuals consequently experience group pressure (in Baron, Branscombe & Byrne 2008). Minority influence on the other hand, refers to the influence that the minority exert over the majority in that the majority come to accept the beliefs and behaviours of a minority (in Baron et al. 2008).

For example; people join social media pages because they want others to like them or think that they are a good influence/ role model. This relates with the article because they know that the higher number of people following an individual the more attraction that person or business will receive. Another example; the reason that this article exists is because of this influence, people conform to what society wants, so if Facebook is socially excepted as the new way of ranking higher than another, it is only a matter of time until this influence will reach to everyone creating a Facebook
Social media has changed the way people communicate with each other and in turn, has affected our ability to empathize in both negative and positive ways. One of the most harmful consequences is the rise of cyber-bullying. Another negative issue has been the trend of trolling in comments sections of websites, chat rooms, and other online venues of communication. In spite of this, there have been constructive consequences due to social media such as the ability for family and friends to keep in touch on a regular basis. Because of social media, many people are finding support and resources to help them when they fall on hard times or experience tragedies like death and illness. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online.
