Growing in the Philippines I was taught to care for others and respect our elders. When both my grandparents’ health deteriorated I have spent a lot of time looking after them and brought comfort to them. Within that period I have realized that I would love to help more people like that. Observing the nurse, who cared for my grandparents and how well she has treated them in a professional and caring manner, I knew that this profession is something I would like to be trained as an adult nurse. When I have moved to the UK I have completed a Health and Social Care course, which has not been easy for me, as English is not my first language, but because of the support in my commitment I achieved a DDD in my course.

I have completed work placements at various elderly day care centers/residential homes which has enabled me to gain a practical understanding of what we have learnt in the classroom; whilst at the same time getting to make a difference to the lives of those we helped. For instance, ensuring that a patient’s privacy and dignity is maintained, whilst dealing with their personal care and the importance of record keeping, accurate care plans and hand overs when working in multi-disciplinary teams. After completing my BTEC course, I have done a placement at Croydon University Hospital, this has been a valuable experience as it has enabled me to work in a functioning hospital and experience the work of nurses and care assistants on a daily basis as they care for patients.The placement has made me realize that nursing is suitable career for me because during emergency situations I stay calm and deal with
I enjoyed taking this class. I did not know what to expect at first, but this class has proven to be challenging and very informative. I have learned a lot about the pharmacological principle of different drugs, which I will use in my practice as a family nurse practitioner. Each week we were given different case study, which we had to find a differential diagnosis based on our patient’s sign and symptoms and also choose the correct pharmacological agent to treat our patient. This was a time-consuming process to come up with the correct diagnosis and treatment. I learned about different pharmacological agents to treat different diseases. I also learned about different medication dosage, side effect and the mechanism of action for different drugs. I was introduced to a different database, such as Epocrates and Micromedex to look up different drugs. The case scenarios gave me the practice that I needed to become familiar with different medications, their action, dosage, side effect, adverse effect and their mechanism of action. By taking this class I am better prepared to meet the MSN program outcome.
I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. But more importantly, it facilitates a practical environment in dealing more closely with patients. Hence, it helps to provide the ultimate health care services to patients. I started working as a Social Work Assistant in a Welsh child protection team in August 2014 until I gained my social work qualification in October 2014 and started practicing as a Social Worker. The team that I work in gains a lot of its staff intake from newly qualified Social Workers and it appears to be well geared to developing and supporting people who may be unexperienced in social work, but have a wide and varied set of skills from other arenas.
Administration of medicines is a key element of nursing care. Every day some 7000 doses of medication are administered in a typical NHS hospital (Audit Commission 2002). So throughout this essay I will be evaluating and highlighting the learning that took place whilst on placement at a day unit.
Overall this semester, I believe my writing in this course has been one of my strongest areas and I am excited to keep getting better at this skill. With my mother’s help during middle and high school, my papers have improved significantly and now I think I have a firm grasp on writing for various disciplines, but particularly professional settings like social work. I picked up on APA format quickly after doing MLA for several years and it now feels like second nature to me. There are certainly still formatting areas to improve upon and learn more about, but at this stage, I think I am progressing steadily. Thirdly, I am able to find appropriate sources easily to reference in my activity analyses, which is crucial as I advance in the program.
With each passing day, new challenges for nurses are created. As of 2011, the baby boomer generation (those born from 1946 to 1964) turned 65. Between 1946 and 1964, approximately 76 million babies were born. Now that they are rising in age, these older adults are starting to need more hospitalization because of age-related issues. With the growing number of older adults seeking healthcare, there is a shortage in the number of nurses willing to take on the responsibility of caring for them (Hartman-Stein & Potkanowicz, 2009). I want to make sure that these adults never have a sense of loneliness because of their age. I also want to make sure that they have the same standards of living that they did before they got sick. Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
