Social Behavior and the Transition to College There was a study conducted to examine whether social achievement goals can explain the way in which students behave socially and how they adjust to it six months later. Social achievement goals can be divided into the following three categories: social development goal, social demonstration-avoid goal, and social demonstration-approach goal. These categories can be defined as a student’s desire to improve relationships and social skills, his desire to avoid negative judgments, and instead, gain positive judgments, respectively. The sample consisted of 52% female and 48% male in which 20% of the 276 college students were not freshmen. The researchers collected information about social achievement and self-esteem from participants using a questionnaire. Following this questionnaire, researchers conducted an observation to measure students overall social adjustment, that is, whether students endorsed a positive social ability. To further analyze students’ social competence, researchers conducted another observation to categorize each students on one of the following social adjustment category: prosocial behavior, overt aggressive behavior, popularity, socially anxious behavior, and internalizing behavior. Sungok and Allison (2012) found that social developmental goals are a predictor of positive social adjustment in the sense that it promoted a prosocial behavior. While Sarah has not been attending the University of Miami for too long, her experiences thus far have given her a very good understanding of her position in this academic community, and nevertheless, gives a representation of first year first generation college students. When students learn about social behavior and relationships it is easier to understand why the behavior of other people is different from others. Our society has many ways of socializing with people around us, and getting to know the right way is an important factor. Everyone in our society has their own behavioral reaction to things and other people, therefore knowing how to react to any type of behavior, and not bring up a problem is something very important. That there will be more peer pressure from your peers and an increase expectations that you have never faced during your high school days. “In the dorms you may find yourself among people whose backgrounds make them seem foreign and unapproachable” (Colombo, p.1). Colombo also states “If you commute, you may be struggling against a feeling of isolation that you’ve never faced before” (Colombo, p. 1).
Throughout the length of schooling, students go through various changes. In their first year of school, children are required to make the transition from being at home for the entire day to being in school for a number of hours a day. These transition periods happen many times through the schooling years, but the most drastic changes occur during the transition from high school to college, where students weather numerous lifestyle changes. While each individual student goes on their own journey, certain themes remain common between different students. Studies are done to look at these themes identifying the numerous differences and similarities.

As I went through the research process for this paper I conducted many interviews with former classmates who are now either attending a four-year university or a local community college. The original intent was to find out their reasons for attending the institution they chose to attend. As I accumulated information I began to see a glaring trend in the relationship between the social group the individual was a member of and the college they ended up attending. This then drove me to further examine the influencing factors in these students’ social lives, in a hope of identifying the degree to which they are influenced by each other. Thus, the first part of the paper explores the community colleges of the surrounding area and the programs that they have to offer to students. Meanwhile, the second part of the paper is more of a sociological investigation into peer groups and the factors that lead kids into choosing their institution of higher education. I chose to focus on the institution that is the community college due to the fact that a large number of my former classmates are enrolled in community colleges.
High risk students showed greater support, quicker processing, and enhanced recall of negative depression-relevant adjectives involving incompetence, worthlessness, and low motivation (Alloy, Abramson, Francis, 1999). For these issues, the counseling center should have a support group for students. Often when a person is depressed, it feels more comfortable to retreat into one’s shell, but being around other people will make a person feel less depressed. To prevent depression, being with peers dealing with the same situations in college can go a very long way in reducing a sense of isolation and worthlessness. Support groups can also give confidence to one another, give and receive guidance on how to cope, and share college experiences.
According to an article by Josephine Marcotty in Minneapolis’ Star Tribune from April 10, college students lead “hyper-enriched lives,” said Greg Kneser, dean of students at St. Olaf College. That’s what makes this generation of students distinct from its predecessors, he said. That is why more students who cannot cope with these feelings end up at college counseling centers with “increasingly serious mental-health problems.” 15 to 20 percent of college students nationally were diagnosed with depression. The second most common diagnosis was severe anxiety. According to the article, it is not unusual for mental-health issues to become apparent during a student’s college years.
When I began college I had a small group of friends, but when I was trying to introduce myself to new people it came as a surprise to them that my parents did not attend college. After the conversations ended, I felt uncomfortable with how to act or think because I had a feeling of misplacement when talking with my fellow peers. As a byproduct of the change in college culture, it will create a “friendlier” environment for the first generation. Students need to feel safe, rather than out of place.
What is the social value of college? The answer to this question is quite different when it is asked to multiple people. Some people believe that the social values that are learned in college can be learned outside of college, and others believe that college provides students with an environment to learn and practices social values in a controlled environment. One person that believes that people can learn social values outside of college is Dale Stephens. When it comes to people, who believe that college gives students a controlled environment to learn and practices social values are Michael S. Roth and Zac Bissonnette. In my opinion Stephens, Roth, and Bissonnette all have important points on the social value of college.

All or most of us have gone through it. The countless hours we spent filling out college applications, scholarship applications, visiting colleges, and taking the dreaded tests. Whether it was the PSAT, SAT, ACT, or other college entrance exams, it was a big hassle. After visiting such a great number of colleges, the advantages and disadvantages of the schools seemed to run together in my mind. The endless paper work and deadlines seemed as though they would never end. When I thought about college, it seemed like it was not real, like it was a figment of my imagination. I imagined what it would be like, wondering where I would go. The questions of "What did I want to major in?" and after I decided that, "What schools had my major?" circled around in my head. When filling out questionnaires for college searches I was asked about what size college I preferred, whether I wanted to be in a rural or suburban area. Did I really know how to answer these questions that would so greatly affect the next four years of my life?
