I have anxiety. These three words are what every 1/13 people struggle to say every single day of their life and only 1/3 seek help. That is two children from every class in your average school. It's shocking how many people suffer because of this yet the issue is thrown under the rug and put off as people being dramatic. I'm here to show you how anxiety is a serious problem, it affects everyone and how the media wrongly portrays it.

Anxiety is a monster that most people have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though anxiety is not actually a monster it still torments thousands of people every day, leaving them weak and scared. Anxiety defined means “distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune” defined by Dictionary.com. In the epic poem of Beowulf, one could say that the townspeople had anxiety when it came to Grendel because they feared what he could do to them.
Anxiety is an extremely common feeling that occurs in everyday life. If I go out and meet new people, I get anxious while initiating a conversation with them. If any kind of crisis will happen in front of me for the first time I will get anxious for sure. For example,

In comparison, fear is a feeling of tension that is associated with a known source of danger. I believe it is normal for us to have some mild anxiety present in our daily lives. It is a widely misunderstood disorder, where nearly 90% of people with social anxiety disorder are misdiagnosed. They are often misdiagnosed with schizophrenia, manic-depression, clinical depression, panic disorder, and or personality disorder (Richards 1-3). Misdiagnosis and undertreatment of anxiety disorders, according to "The Economic Burden of Anxiety Disorders," a study commissioned by the ADAA, costs the United States more than $42 billion a year and more than $22.84 billion is linked to the repeated use of healthcare services for symptoms that mimic physical illness. In addition, people with anxiety disorder are three-to-five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders when compared to those who do not suffer from anxiety disorders ("Brief Overview of Anxiety Disorders" 2) (3).
According to DSM V, Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), is defined as a persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others. The individual fears that he or she will act in a way (or show anxiety symptoms) that will be embarrassing and humiliating (DSM V, 2014).

Anxiety can be caused by many things, and everyone has different triggers. Something minuscule that will not affect a person might have a major effect on another person. “Approximately 20%” of adolescents suffer from Social anxiety disorder (SAD)” (Mehtalia, Vankar, 2004.). It’s safe to say that I feel that I’m an anxious person and that I have an anxiety disorder. My first example of being anxious is when I speak in public.

Anxiety helps us deal with tense situations like using our flight or fight reaction, study harder for an exam, or keep focus on important deadlines. Anxiety can be useful until it gets to the point of interfering with everyday life. Some people explain it as not being able to shut the anxiety off. There are five major Anxiety Disorders they include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Phobias.

For over three years, I have suffered from social anxiety disorder and shattered my social life in the process. Social anxiety disorder, also known as social anxiety or social phobia, is a psychiatric disorder where the sufferer has a fear of being in social situations, and is unable to interact with other people. This might appear as bashfulness to those that lack understanding of the problem. However, this is a problem that is much more severe than that. Social anxiety has the potential to ruin peoples’ lives. By fearing other people, you become unable to communicate with them, and therefore you are unable to live a normal, everyday lifestyle.
People who are feeling anxious often exhibit some physical symptoms that are easy for a person to identify, while others are harder to recognize visually. For example a person may feel restless, have a choking feeling, increased heartrate, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, hot flashes or chills, and numbness which people are unable to notice unless they the person with these symptoms tells them what is happening. A person would be able to see someone feeling anxious starting to shake, breathing heavily, or having sweaty palms. People that are feeling anxious will also exhibit behavioral differences. For example, they will begin avoiding situations, trying to leave situations they feel anxious in, becoming self-destructive, limiting themselves, and becoming attached to objects and people. People who engage in these kinds of behaviors are usually coping with the feeling of anxiety or trying to avoid feeling anxious to begin with. Anxiety can also change ones cognitive thought processes, causing them to question various aspects of their lives, even if they have no direct effect on them, or it the effect would not occur for a while. Anxious people have difficulty handling the unknown, often feel they are going crazy, and feel trapped. It is important to identify these behaviors and physical symptoms in oneself and in others to avoid a potentially dangerous situation and to prevent one from allowing their anxiety to become uncontrollable or to find someone help if it is already becoming too
