I believe I should be awarded with this scholarship because I can not depend on receiving a soccer scholarship when I have yet to receive any calls. I need help paying for my tuition, housing, and books. We all know how expensive that can be. It's not just those things I have to pay for, I also have to pay for lunch, toiletries, car maintenance, and other things adults have to pay for on an everyday basis. I already have a list of things to pay for, but i don't have a job. I want to be a cardiologist and help people who have heart diseases, heart murmurs and other major problems young and older people face. I want to encourage people to avoid these problems so they can live a long and healthy life. I've been told I would not receive a lot
of help from financial aid due to the amount of money my father makes. The only problem is, my father makes that money, not me. I am the one looking to pay for my education and that is why I should be awarded with this scholarship. Anything helps, big or small, i just want to accomplish BIG dreams.
The Leeds Scholars Program offers many academic benefits that I firmly believe will maximize the potential of any student. Because the Leeds Scholars Program is a rigorous process, the difference in my community of peers, the mentorship opportunities, and the specialized advising will essentially provide the proper guidance needed in order to fully succeed academically and professionally. For the reason that I have first hand experience, I have a strong belief that proper guidance is as valuable as the knowledge given in a classroom. Although I always saw myself as a scholar, coming from an underrepresented background I was always surrounded by pervasive situations. If it were not for the administration team at my high school mentoring me,
The soccer controversy dealing with gendered wage gaps only reinforces the idea that gender is a psychologically ingrained social construct instead of an innate quality, especially in a patriarchal society where women oppression is still prevalent (Risman, 1998). As Hope mentions, “this day and age is about equality and about equal pay. We are pushing that and to be treated with respect.” By conveying this statement, Hope and her teammates are not only expressing their concerns about the gendered pay gap in soccer and in other realms of the work field, but they are also illuminating the existence of a pay gap as a larger sociological problem; a problem where a woman makes 76 cents for a man’s dollar (Sklar, 2012). Similar to other sports like basketball and football, soccer is conventionally portrayed as a manly sport with a great amount of physical contact, rigor, sweat, pain, skill, concentration and will.
Having the college experience is everyone’s dream, especially High School students who are ready to get out into the world and explore. College is very important for furthering someone’s career, but no one thinks about all the costs and the stress that comes along with college. Tuition fees and costs are increasing more and more each year. Now days it feels like you have to be a millionaire just to attend a good college and get a good degree in what you were attending for. There are some students that do not have a lot of money and live on very little things with their parents, but indeed are very smart and have a 4.0 GPA. Those students are the ones that are unable to attend college if they cannot afford it. College tuition is too expensive,
I have been saving my 4-H money for college this whole time. This scholarship will help with books and other experiences I can put towards, as stated before my family has a low income and is unable to assist me. I wasn't expecting anything. I am not Entitled to anything my parents have worked for, only to what I
After four years of a new team every season, I went into my first practice of my fifth soccer season expecting the same to be true. Play on this team for one year and then be randomly placed on a different one the following year. Little did I know this team, especially the coaches, would leave a lasting impact on my life. I gained an invaluable support system that has stuck by my side for an upwards of nine years.
College football is beneficial for both the players and city. College football is more than a sport for entertainment; it’s a sport that has been the unifier for colleges, players, and most Americans. It brings people together; strangers standing side-by-side, jumping, getting excited, high-fiving one another, cheering on a group of fifty men playing a game. The cities that host the game are receiving more recognition. Intelligence Squared hosted a debate on whether the sport should be banned. One debater Malcolm Gladwell(2012) stated:
For many years now, advocates for giving out scholarships based only on financial need have been pushing to remove special abilities from the criteria to award the money. This proposed system is already in use in the form of financial aid. Scholarships were created to reward individuals who exhibited talent that would benefit the college. Therefore, the basis for giving scholarships should consist equally of scholastic achievement, athletic ability, and need. Scholarships are in place to reward special talents. They should remain separate from financial aid where the only determining factor is need.
The Bible states in Proverbs 22:7, “The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower becomes the lender's slave.” The rich NCAA and universities rule over the poorer student athletes. These student athletes are borrowing an education with their scholarships and in return are expected to become the slave of the university. The student athletes live in the debt of the university and frequently don’t have enough money for clothes, food, and basic needs. This is just one of the many reasons why college student athletes should be compensated for a percentage of what the university makes due to their success.
Coming from a family with no college education, a college degree has always been a lifetime goal and dream of mine. My mom and dad have worked in furniture factories since their graduation from high school, and I have seen their personal struggles, and it has only pushed me harder to want to attend college. My parents have always worked hard to bless me with all they could, but paying for college is out of their control, therefore I am heavily relying on scholarships. Receiving the Phil Jones Memorial Scholarship would mean everything to me and would be a tremendous help for me while at ICC and UMMC. If I could win this scholarship, it would help me achieve the goal of staying away from student loans and debt.

I find that traveling is so interesting as it gives me the chance to see how others live and experience their culture.
For this current academic school year, I received a nursing legacy scholarship, as well as a scholarship from the Marine Corp Scholarship Foundation. However, I did not receive enough to help pay for anything other than tuition. Books and room and board are being paid out of pocket, and because this school year in the nursing program is so strenuous, it is hard for me to work enough hours to pay for such things and then have the funds for other necessities such as food. Both of my parents are also going to school full time, and I have two younger siblings at home. My parents help me as much as they can, but given the circumstances I am currently trying to juggle around school, work, extracurricular activities, and other essential
With a scholarship, it can help me shape my dreams in being the first in my family to obtain a bachelor’s degree. With that degree, I would like to major in communications and be able to focus in broadcasting work in both the radio and television fields. I possess the skill of hard work. It shows in every aspect of my life from my desolate upbringing to my noted academic work which has placed me on the President’s/Dean’s list on several occasions and even into my volunteer work which has netted me hundreds of cumulative hours within the college. A scholarship would only help me further my overall success and bring all of my goals to
People all around the world wrestle, or they ride bulls but people think football is dangerous. With all the protective gear we have now a days, children will not feel even a little bunch to the shoulder. Think of all the positive things that will happen to little children if they start playing football. They will stay fit and healthy, they gain the ability to work as a team player, they become more responsible, and if a child starts to become really good at football he can gain a scholarship. Kids should be able to play football.
As the crowd begins their chants and anthems, the teams take their places upon the pitch. The ground is shaking underneath you and smoking flares are lighting up around the stadium. Welcome to the world of football. Soccer has become a way of life for many and an escape from reality. It is the game for any class and will steal your heart with the art that comes with it. Soccer isn’t just a sport, it is a religion many follow, but most importantly it brings masses around the world together. We call this, the Beautiful Game. If this claims to be the most popular sport around the world, why is soccer not considered a big sport and why has it never caught on in America?
