For many americans, sports are a common staple of a weekly schedule with intentions not in vain. It widely known that sports have many benefits that will be discussed in this paper. For one, sports have been proven to have educational benefits . In addition to this, children who participate in sports have increased educational and occupational aspirations as well as a surprising low injury rate for more physical sports. In summary, sports should not be removed or atleast drastically changed due to their educational benefits, increased drive in the players to pursue goals, low injury rate when put into perspective.

In relation to the topic sentence, the article also includes ”...a multi year study connected in Michigan has shown that children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school and increased occupational aspirations in youth”(Gould,pg1). All in all not only do sports teach players life lessons but also improve their passion for school. In conclusion, this paper has shown the benefits of high school sports and why they should be kept in schools. As shown by the educational benefits, increased drive in the players to pursue goals, low injury rate when put into perspective. So it’s recommended that the reader of this text if you find that a school is closing down its sport activities, then remind them that their sole purpose is to put the student first and show them of the benefits of sports and help work it out.
Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. This statement rests on the assumption that children would not perform any “physical actions that are bad for growing bodies” (Statsky 627) without organized competitive sports. This is simply untrue. Children jump from swings, climb trees, skateboard, “pop wheelies” and otherwise put themselves in physical peril with alarming regularity. Children’s free and unorganized play often results in broken bones and stitches, even for the most timid children.
There are way too many students all over the world today that are overweight, and even obese. A major way to reduce or eliminate these numbers would be to get more participation in high school athletics. Sports do not only provide a healthier body, but also teaches lessons for later on in life, not just good body health. It helps students learn to accept others, and also learn how to face tough decisions like adversity. Another big skill students would learn is how to accept others no matter what gender, race, or ethnicity. High school students should be mandated to participate in a sport in order to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Every year over 7,807,000 high school students, including me, play a sport through their school (they are counted twice if they play two sports and so on) (NFHS). I have found that playing basketball is a great way to get involved in the school and meet new people. Many studies agree that playing sports is important, one from Michigan State says that “Kids who participate in organized sports do better in school, have better interpersonal skills, are more team oriented, and are generally healthier” (Chen, “Pros and Cons”). However, in the past 7 years, sport participation in middle and high school has gone down by more than 4.9% (Facts: Sports Activity). Playing a sport is important, studies show that playing sports in high school not only builds character, but can also increase student health and fitness, and contribute to an athlete’s future success.
Lack of Funding in Sports Programs is causing schools and after school programs to drop sports all together. Educational departments are cutting funding for these programs and this is hurting children for many reasons. Everyone knows that sports cultivate physical development, but very few comprehend the fact that sports can also help kids excel in their academic skills. Sports, a very popular past time today, have been around since ancient times. Greek Olympic Games featured events from chariot races, javelin throws, to wrestling. In addition, a game similar to soccer was played in China by the second century BC. In England, a violent rugby type game was even played to settle feuds between villages. With the development of the industrial revolution and the creation of the first public schools, sports decreased in violence and were played more recreationally and constructively. Basketball was invented to help the youth in New England spend their energy in the winter months. Since the early 1900’s sports have been a key experience in the United States (“History of Sports”). I have played sports for many years, and the experience has helped me grow significantly as an individual.
