Effect of Altered Environmental Conditions on Snow Pea Germination
Research Question
What is the effect of exposure to different temperatures (-18, 2, 23, 30, 40 degrees Celsius) for short periods of time on the germination and sprouting of snow pea seeds?
Hypothesis
If the temperature of a growing snow pea’s environment is increased or decreased drastically, for short periods of time, then the snow pea plants will respond in different ways (for example, loss of leaves in cold temperatures, caused by unsuitable conditions for foliage growth, or wilting in hot temperatures, due to dryness and a lack of water).
Background Information
Effects of certain temperatures on the snow peas can be observed by measuring their growth in the time they

Some plant species lose their leaves in winter, entering a stage of dormancy, in which they can survive extremely low temperatures. (Wikidot, 2011) Most plants respond rapidly to low temperatures, making metabolic changes in existing tissues. Respones can also be long-term, such as developmental changes (e.g. promotion of flowering, breaking of bud dormancy, and formation of new, thicker leaves). (Schmidt, n.d.)
Fluctuations in temperature can alter critical metabolic processes of biosynthesis and cellular maintenance, and prolonged exposure to high temperatures is lethal to most plant species. Temperatures between 30-40ºC are considered moderately high, and temperatures above 40ºC are considered extremely high. In most plant species, growing tissue is damaged with brief exposure to temperatures above temperatures above 45ºC. (Munns, n.d.)

This experiment was carried out by planting snow peas in pots and maintaining them until they were at least 10cm in height, the environment in which the plants would be kept for a week was then prepared. Water baths were set to desired temperatures and plants were placed in plastic containers that contained the liquid from the water baths, while the other plants were placed in a fridge and freezer. These plants were kept in these states for an hour each day, for five days in a row. Our hypothesis stated that when the temperature of a growing snow pea’s environment is increased or decreased drastically, for short periods of time, then the snow pea plants will respond in different ways (for example, loss of leaves in cold temperatures, or wilting in hot temperatures). This was proven to be somewhat true, as the snow peas did respond in different ways but no trend line was
Cellular respiration is the process by which energy is harvested involving the oxidation of organic compounds to extract energy from chemical bonds (Raven & Johnson, 2014). There are two types of cellular respiration which include anaerobic respiration, which can be done without oxygen, and aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen. The purpose of this experiment is to determine whether Phaseolus lunatus, also known as dormant seeds or lima beans, respire. You will compare the results of the respiration rate of the dormant seeds, and the Pisum sativum, or garden peas. In this experiment, you will use two constants which will be the temperature of the water and the time each set of peas are soaked and recorded. Using these constants will help
Two members of the group were instructed to visit the laboratory each day of the experiment to water and measure the plants (Handout 1). The measurements that were preformed were to be precise and accurate by the group by organizing a standardized way to measure the plants. The plants were measured from the level of the soil, which was flat throughout all the cups, to the tip of the apical meristems. The leaves were not considered. The watering of the plants took place nearly everyday, except for the times the lab was closed. Respective of cup label, the appropriate drop of solution was added to the plant, at the very tip of the apical meristems.
We placed elodea plants into three different beakers and labelled them. Since, we are trying to find how temperature can affect the rate of production of carbon dioxide, we had to place them in different temperatures. So, we labelled the first beaker “Elodea heat” and placed it in a water bath that produced sufficient amount of heat. We labelled the second one “Elodea cool” which was placed in an ice bath filled with ice. The next one “Elodea RT” where the elodea was placed under normal room temperature without any interference. And we named the last one “No Elodea” where we placed no elodea in it and kept the beaker in a dark
The Brassica rapa plants were bred to live in the colder states of America, such as Michigan and Wisconsin. Up there they have very few times it is actually warm enough for plant growth. So to take advantage of those few short moments, Dr. Williams bred a ...
We used wheatgrass were 40 wheatgrass seeds, two empty pots, soil, and water. We first added soil for both pots and 20 wheatgrass seeds in each pot. My partner and I decided that we label pot one experiment which is “sugar and water” and pot two control which is “water” only. The experiment was for almost four weeks we had to make sure both get the same room temperature and water, so we can see the results after this amount of time. Both pots had same room temperature so both can have the same amount of sunlight also, the same amount of water which is a glass of water from the sink once a week. In the experiment pot we added a glass of water with one teaspoon of sugar and the control pot glass of water. Every week we used to see both pots grow almost the same. At the end of the experiment, my partner and I measured the length for both plants and we recorded the average for each plant, so we can know the rate of growth

Russia holds terrible weather conditions; in the summer temperatures are uncomfortably high, through autumn the temperatures begin to decrease, and rains and snow begins to fall. When winter hits the land is frozen solid to the extremely low temperatures, in the spring the
Cold Potato: that when the potato is cooled to 2-5 degrees the production of oxygen will be slowed as the catalase in the potato will become less active due to the molecules getting less kinetic temperature from the heat.
As a result of these factors, the flora has adapted to these conditions in a variety of ways including their shape, leaf type, root system, and color. One of the most prominent adapt...
Aim of the research: The aim of this investigation is to determine what kind of effect will the increasing temperature have on the plasma membrane of a beetroot cell.
the effect light has on the growth of pea plants. It will take place in an environment with controlled light, with equal amounts of plants being grown in the light and in the dark. All elements of the experiment other than light will be kept the same, such as amount of seeds in each pot, amount of soil in each pot and amount of water given to each plant each day. This will ensure a fair experiment. Prediction: I predict that in general, the plants grown in the light will grow better than those grown in the dark.

One of the impacts of climate change is that as the temperatures in cooler parts of the world change and become warmer, this will allow that place to be more habitable to other different types of food crops, thus expanding the area in which these crops can be grown. For example, less frequent freezes will allow crops like citrus to be planted and gro...
...drought is a more serious case in which plants have to either acclimate or adapt to the environmental condition in which it is living in to combat the heat stress. Deep root systems and early stomatal closure are a couple strategies that plants use to increase water uptake and decrease transpirational water loss. During rainfall, plants have more water available to them because of the increase in soil water potential and stomatal conductance. Frequency in precipitation pulses allows the plant to photosynthesize and transpire in moderation. An aim for future research is to study plant physiology at the community and ecosystem levels to further understand the water and carbon budgets (Loik 2007). A plant behavior under extreme drought conditions or increased rainfall variability can help predict future changes in CO2 assimilation and help preserve plant ecosystems.
...ts the flower formation. These types of strategy used by many farmers have an important economic impact since most of the energy for maintaining green house is at night. There is a need of further research developments in this area to link the minimum exposure during day and magnitude at higher temperatures .in inhibiting the process of flowering. The flowering time is less at 230C, but the number of buds per plant and inflorescences is low at cool temperatures..
