Do you want to learn how to play drums but aren’t quite sure where to begin? You may be asking yourself a number of questions like, “How can I learn to play like a professional?” The answer to playing like a professional is years and years of practice. Or also, “What equipment do I need?” For starters I recommend a simple setup consisting of a snare drum, a bass drum, cymbals, and toms. The snare is the center of a five-piece drum kit. In other words it’s the main part of the drum-set. The snare drum is responsible for the loud crack, usually on upbeats, that you hear during songs. The snare’s sound comes from its shell, which is generally made from wood like maple, birch, or mahogany, or from metals such as aluminum, bronze, brass, or stainless steel. …show more content…
The bass, or kick drum, is easy to find because it’s the largest drum in a drum kit. Most bass drum shells are also made from woods like maple, heartwood birch, and mahogany, but you can also find bass drum shells made from metals. When the bass drum is played, you use your foot on the drum’s kick pedal to produce a thumping sound. The bass drum is essential to the drum kit because it’s the most distinctive part of a band’s timekeeping. This drum keeps the entire band or ensemble on beat. Then we have the toms and cymbals. The toms, or tom-toms, are mounted either above the bass drum or held up by adjustable legs. In a five-piece drum kit, there are two types of toms: the rack toms and the floor toms. The floor and rack toms are most commonly used during drum fills. Like the other drums in the kit, the toms are generally made from wood or metal. In addition to these basic parts of a drum set, you can also add cymbals like the hi-hat, crash, and ride cymbals. These add accents to your music and can serve as transitions from one passage in a song to the next. Playing drum set takes rhythm, hands on treatment, and

In some ways similar to uses of Agbekor, the drummers tell historical stories and occurrences with their drums, similar to how the Ewe would express themselves after war, telling of there experiences. The overall instrumental density of the various Dagomba songs seem to be less than that of the Ewe, but that's not to say it's any less in depth. Their are two kinds of primary drums played in these performances; the gung-gong and the lunga. Firstly is the gung-gong, a cylindrical, carved wooden drum with a snare on each of the two heads. The lunga, specifically made from cedarwood, takes the shape of an hourglass with leather cords strung on the sides of the body.
Underground hip-hop is filled with groups such as The Pharcyde, The Roots, Jigmastas, and Jurassic 5 who use live instruments to not only enhance their lyrical talents, but also to give audiences a great show. All four of these groups are dedicated to preserving hip-hop culture. Emcees battle to prove they are iller, Djs do the same thing, and breakers, break dancers, poppers, whatever you want to call them, continue the tradition of mixing their dance art form of popping, locking and spinning using the music to help create different techniques.

Samba can be heard all throughout Brazil. It is a musical genre accompanied by song and dance that includes an ensemble of percussion instruments and guitar. The puxador (lead singer) initiates the samba, sometimes singing the same song for hours at a time. The responsibility of keeping thousands of voices in time with the drum section rests on his shoulders. Gradually, the other members of the escola (samba group) join in, and with a whistle from the mestre de bateria (percussion conductor) - the most exciting moment of the parade occurs as the percussion section crashes in. The surdos (bass drums) keep the 2 / 4 meter, while caixas (snare drums) and tamborins accent the second beat. This percussion ensemble, referred to as the 'bateria', often i...
The Bagpipes have been used continuously through the course of history and throughout many cultures. The history of bagpipes, much like its origins are elusive. The bagpipes were reported to have been played by Roman emperors to French and Scottish kings. ...ums in the percussion section. It does not have a definite pitch like the timpani. (Jason) Bass drums cannot be tuned like you can tune the timpani. Concert bass drums usually have loose heads that vibrate more for a darker tone. Drums aren’t the only types of instruments in the percussion category; they are just a couple of the instruments that fall into the untuned percussion category. These untuned drums are used for rhythmic patterns of the composition. These untuned instruments don’t have a distinct note, but they only make one sound, and that is the sound this stick with. Untuned percussion instruments are not the only instruments that are played in the orchestra. Tuned percussion instruments are instruments that have distinct notes that you can play. Marimbas are tuned percussion instruments; they have four to five octaves of notes from A natural, to G sharp.
There are more than fifty different types of percussion instruments, possibly starting with the antique cymbals and maybe ending with the xylophone. There are many different classes of percussion instruments. For example there is Latin percussion instruments, Classic percussion instruments, and Modern percussion instruments. Most percussion instruments are played by shaking, using hands or using a mallet or stick and have stretched membranes. Percussion instruments also have been used to emphasize rhythm and to heighten climaxes.(1) The drums are part of the percussion instruments and is one of the world’s oldest instruments. An instrument, that is the only orchestral drums of definite pitch, is the timpani, which is also called the kettledrums.(4)
In the article, “Musical Instruments of Oceania” by Eric Kjellgren. “Oceanic musical instruments include the broad categories familiar in the West, such as percussion, wind and string instruments, as well as forms that are distinctive to the religion. These vary from familiar types such as drums, flutes and the Hawaiian ukulele to unusual forms such as slit gongs and bullroarers” (Kjellegren 2010). The type of music Polynesian’s create and listen to is made from different instruments that we are familiar with. For example an instrument they use is the drums. “In addition to drums with heads, Pacific people create a variety of other drum like percussion instruments, such as the water drums of the Sepik region of New Guinea and the ground drums of Hawai’i, to provide rhythmical accompaniment in a diversity of contexts” (Kjellgren 2010). They also use flute and trumpet like instruments too. “Like conch-shell trumpets, ocarinas, also called vessel flutes, are predominantly fashioned from natural objects such as the shells of coconuts or small gourds, although examples made from manufactured materials, such as ceramic, also occur” (Kjellgren 2010). In addition to all those instruments the most well known string instrument is the ukulele. “…the Hawaiian ukulele, is derived from the braguinha, a small variety of guitar introduced by Portuguese settlers that was subsequently modified to suit local musical tastes. Today, larger guitars of various forms are used by musicians throughout the Pacific” (Kjellgren 2010). All these instruments used then are also used today to create many different styles of
Mainly the West Africans used percussive instruments. These drums came in all sizes ranging from ten to twelve inches to ten to twelve feet. Their drums were made out of hollowed out logs and gourds with a tight skin over the hollow. They also used idiophones to make music. They used a variety of bells, castanets, gongs, and sometimes they made small xylophones or small pianos. Aerophones weren't as prevalent as the percussions or idiophones. Some explorers made small flutes, horns and trumpets from elephant tusks.
The first major piece is the snare drum. The snare drum is used to accent the main beat in a rhythm. The second major component of the drum kit is the bass drum. The bass drum creates the low "thud" sound that an individual hears in the music. It is typically used to keep the tempo (the speed of the song) steady and consistent. The third and fourth pieces are the hi-hat and the ride cymbals. These cymbals are used to accent every and any beat within a rhythm. Finally, the fourth, fifth, and sixth important components of the drum kit are the toms. The toms are used to add flare and taste to music. Basically, the toms are put to use for something that sounds different. These small breaks within a rhythm are called fills (Strong 12-13). The modern drum kit is set up based entirely upon the percussionists personal preference. For example, many drummers will play with two toms, and many drummers will play with thirty-two toms. Usually, the personal preference will be judged upon how the drummer plays music and the style of music that he or she plays. Since the discovery of drums in 6000 BC, drums and percussion have drastically evolved in their construction and in their
