It is not just enough to become a Registered nurse these days. Healthcare and technology has evolved to produce a smaller, more interconnected world, healthcare costs have increased, which in turn has created organizational restructuring and change in practices; thus, allowing the need for nurses to develop critical thinking skills and take on leadership roles. To be part of a WOCN team, it is imperative to have excellent wound assessment skills, wound care techniques and knowledge of wounds, healing process, and appliances (Fitzpatrick, 2012 p. 200). The goal will follow the SMART format of being, specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound. Specific refers to this author’s SMART goal being focused on obtaining certification as a Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse (WOCN), and work as part of an interdisciplinary team in a hospital setting. The process for this goal will begin after completion of the BSN program. The accomplishment of this goal will encourage professional growth and an opportunity to help develop a more cohesive working relationship with other disciplines. Measurable refers to attending an accredited WOCN class and taking an exam. The school of choice is online based through the Cleveland Clinic, and according to the Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse Certification Board (WOCNCB), requires 16 weeks didactic class instruction and 120 hours of clinical experience with a locally approved board certified WOC preceptor (WOCNCB, 2015). In particular, the use of Florence Nightingale’s theory of nursing as the basis of my new practice had allowed me to begin with the basics and work my way forward toward a more modern and holistic approach to nursing care. While Florence’s work focused mainly on the military and her care of soldiers, she began to establish schools of nursing to promote nursing education and to encourage people to view nursing as a viable profession, (Alligood, 2014. 63). Nightingale’s focus may have been care of the military, but she made great strides on getting recognition for nursing and her theories still affect the practice of nursing today. In the article, Nurses as Leaders, the author proposes that nurse leaders have made great strides since Nightingale’s time when nurses were conscripted to help care for wounded soldiers. Such a setting required these early nurse pioneers to rely on critical thinking and quick action in order to save lives. The author goes on to discuss how a change in nursing occurred in the early 20th century as new management styles emerged, most notable the “Scientific Management,” model. This style placed doctors at the top, then nurse managers, and on down to bedside care staff. Introduction The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experience in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. In this paper, I will address two of my learning needs and my goals for each.
The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN’s) goal is to prepare future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) that are needed to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work. QSEN focuses on six main competencies; patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. As we have learned in earlier classes these competencies and their KSAs offer a base to help us and other nurses as we continue our education and become RNs. As we will learn in this class these KSAs go hand in hand with health assessment.

Patient care is the main reason I chose to be a career in the healthcare field. During training a Certified Nurse’s Aide is required to master twenty-one patient care skills. These skills include taking vital signs, assisting with bathing and dressing, changing bed pans, and assistance with exercise and mobility. It is important CNA’s know the proper way of helping patients ambulate, shave, and providing perineal care so the patient does not get a skin infection. Perineal care is often included in bathing and involves cleaning the perineum, the external genitalia, and the surrounding skin. A career in the medical field is always evolving, and always needing more hands. I knew from a young age that helping people is what I was meant to do, and from then on out every step I took was the way to a successful career in nursing. It is a profession that allows you to see people at their worst, all while helping them become their best. The most important task for nursing students is to create a clear pathway for our education, and to be sure to follow that plan accordingly. When choosing this career, I had to access my own strengths and weaknesses and really establish clear goals for myself and evaluate if I had what it takes to be a part of this diverse and skilled profession. I also decided not only not only do I need to set professional goals for this career, personal goals are important as well.

Self awareness in nursing refers to how glowing nurses comprehend themselves, their strengths, weaknesses, attitude and ethics in order to better transact with their patients. Self- awareness includes review of self, together with self confidence. Self -regulation express beyond one`s emotion and being trustworthy. For nurses to be able to empathize with their patients and treat them with compassion, they have to be self aware. When nurses are self aware, they are capable to adapt to, or certainly change their attitudes and deed in order to understand how unusual people take care of them hence improving the nurse- patient relationship. Nurses must reflect carefully on whether they can sustain in dependence in caring for a client and whether the relationship interferes with gathering the client’s needs. It is also essential to be sure that providing care to family and friends does not interfere with the care of other clients or with the dynamics of the health care group. Before making the conclusion, the nurse may possibly wish to discuss the situation with colleagues and the employer.
When asking a nurse why they became a nurse the first statement that they will often provide you with is centered around their love to care for others. To provide effective care it is important for a nurse to care for the whole person not just their injuries. Through the use of therapeutic touch and conversations as well as treating each patient as an individual, this enables more in depth care to be provided to each patient that a nurse treats. I hold this facet up to the highest standards as providing equal and respectful care to each client in regards to their emotional, mental, physical, and cultural needs makes all of the difference to a patient in the healing process and person-centered nursing.
Nursing and Qualities That I Possess to become a Good Nurse Nursing is the act of safely caring, protecting and improving our clients’/patients’ health and ability without causing any further harm or disability to them. Our primary goal is to restore and maintain good health physically, spiritually and psychologically. It is a science, such that one has to apply the nursing knowledge and technical aspects of practice. However, it is important to incorporate the act of patient-centered care, which is defined according to QSEN/NOF, as holistic care that recognizes the patient as the source of control and full-partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care with respect for the patient’s desire, values, needs and preferences. My nursing career began 7 years ago at SSM on Medical Oncology Unit. I was certified in Chemotherapy and Wound Care. Although there were thirty staff nurses, only two of us were certified in wound care and five were chemotherapy certified. Besides caring for my medical-surgical patients, I was also responsible for administering chemotherapy and monitoring cancer patients as well as assessing, documenting, and recommend the appropriate treatments for different types of types of wounds, including surgical openings, ulcers, bed sores, feeding tube sites, and abscesses. I gained a diverse range of clinical skills in Emergency Department, Cardiology, Neurosurgery, and Orthopedic Surgery as floating was a staff nurse's requirement. Every nursing
