In the movie Pitch Perfect the theories that best describe the small group communication seen in the film would be Functional theory and Symbolic Convergence Theory. The Functional theory focuses on the results or outcomes of the group's behavior and structure. This view sees this relationship as a tool for team members to solve problems and make decisions, it helps team members by encouraging rational decision making and critical thinking, and reminds team members to not make inaccurate and incorrect decisions. Therefore, plays an important role because it provides a means by which team members can achieve their goals, beat the Treblemakers and win the ICCA’s. For example, Beca suggests that the Bellas should try something new instead of the …show more content…
same original acapella routine. Next, the Symbolic Convergence Theory studies the meaning of Constructing Communication. In the group, members develop intimate code words and signals that only those in the group understand. When groups achieve symbolic integration, they have community awareness based on shared experience and understanding. For example, when the Bellas confess secrets that no one else knows about them. So, an example of group communication in term of group development is when the Bellas are practicing in the empty parking lot and are all working together in perfect pitch. Another, example is Beca since she can relate to the theories of development like Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. Additionally, Beca can relate to the pyramid because she has achieve each tier. Physiological needs–– she has food, drinks, she sleeps and breaths. Security Needs–– Beca has a job at the record store, sleeps in her dorm room every night, and has her father close by. Social Needs–– she is loved by some of her members on the Barden Bellas, her father loves her, also Jesse has feelings for her. Esteem Needs–– she has confidence to dance and sing in front of an audience, also she makes her own music which takes confidence. Again, aesthetic needs–– Beca has explored such as becoming a Barden Bella girl, she came out of her "shell." Self- Actualization Needs–– she creates her own music, she also led the Barden bellas song choice and dance for the finals.
As can be seen, the Bella’s have many roles. For example, Aubrey has task/individual, Chloe has maintenance, Beca has individual/task and maintenance, Fat Amy has task/maintenance and individual, Stacie has Individual/Task, Cynthia Rose has Task, and Lilly has Task. Also, Aubrey shows legitimate power because her seniority influences every Bella. Beca earns referent power. Amid, a key nonverbal communication is eye contact.
For example, Beca makes eye contact with her father, but then turns away even though he continues looking in her direction. It is an example that she does not care that he is there or the conversation. Another, key verbal communication is when Jesse tells Beca’s roommate, Kimmy, “always a pleasure.” Even so, a moment of conflict with the Bella’s was when Beca gets arrested for a broken window and everyone runs away, Jesse calls Beca’s dad and she gets angry and yells at Jesse. A way Beca works through problem solving is that she cools down and thinks about what would be her best action to
make. The type of leadership that most stands out to me from the film is authoritarian leadership, it is best shown through Aubrey and Bumper. Authoritarian leaders hold high position because of their intellect and behavior in groups. Aubrey shows behavioral superiority through her actions. For example, when the Bella’s were fighting Chloe tells Aubrey that she is too controlling. Bumper only accepts two new members in the Treblemakers and rejects Benji who was a good acapella singer. Lastly, creativity plays a role in the Bella’s new routine for the ICCA’s. For example, there is a scene where they are in the empty parking lot and are mashing up a song together in perfect pitch.
The presence of nonverbal messages in our communication is very important. Following the text, researchers have estimated it is up to “65 percent of social meaning we convey in face-to-face interactions is a result of nonverbal behavior” (131). The movie “Mrs. Doubtfire” is a typical example about the interactions among characters, also with audience. Several scenes in this movie show us the effects of nonverbal messages in communication, especially through the character Daniel, who disguises himself as a middle-aged British nanny in order to be near his children.
The movie Crash examines the interpersonal communications that exists between different groups’ of people. In this film, characters are highlighted by the contact that occurs when disparate people are thrown together in large urban settings. Crash displays extreme instances of racism and shows how the thought, feeling, and behavior of individuals are influenced by actual, imagined, or implied presence of other human beings. My analysis will focus on Social Cognition and how people process, and apply information about other people and social situations.
My analysis is on the film The Goonies. While I view the movie and determine the various norms, behaviors, roles and interaction between group members, as well as individuals the examination within the realm of film can present many of the same components. Thus, our group selected this movie to analyze based on its formation of a cohesive problem-solving group full of unforgettable characters. The Goonies portray many different theories and aspects of small group communication.
The relaxed body language Vicky has adapted also indicates openness, kindness, genuineness reflects in her eyes, while she maintains eye contact on some occasions with Lucy, Adler and Rodman (2003) mention that the eyes are the most noticeable, when communicating and have a very powerful impact. Vicky can be seen as liberal individual because she encourages freedom of communication further her use of dress code, body language indicates this. Vicky’s paralinguistic tone was soft and friendly but, her facial expressions bring out warmth such as when she’s smiling and turning her head towards Lucy. Thus, gives Lucy the indication by judging her verbal and non-verbal meta -messages, that she can confide in Vicky and her views will be heard.
Another example of non- verbal cues from the movie is when Regina is looking at Katie while the other two girls are yelling at her to leave and Katie turns her
The movie Bridesmaids has been my favorite movie since the first time I viewed it, with just the perfect amount of humor and real-life difficulties to satisfy. After I started learning about interpersonal communication I realized how many of my personal relationships use the concepts we have discussed as well as how I have used the concepts while becoming who I am now.

First, it is imperative to understand the history regarding Bella and Dante’s relationship with Eric and Elizabeth. In November of 2008, Eric and Elizabeth (as foster parents) received Bella and Dante, at the tender age of two months, in their home because of alleged child abuse (severe injuries to bone and brain trauma). Throughout the prior year, Eric and Elizabeth dedicated a tremendous amount of time and effort assisting these children with medical and rehabilitation services. In addition, recovery is progressing at an accelerated pace and acclimation to the family and home is complete.
A month after the wedding, Bella calls her dad, Charlie Swan, and says that she is sick and quarantined. Charlie relays this to Billy Black, Jacob's dad, and Billy relays it to the pack. Jacob thinks that Bella is actually a vampire now and attempts to lead an assault on the Cullens for breaking the treaty. Sam, the alpha of the pack, forbids an assault on the Cullens without seeing Bella's immortality for himself. Jacob heads off on his own to avenge Bella. When he arrives, he discovers that Bella was sick, but it was from her pregnancy, not a disease. Jacob begs Bella to abort the fetus and save her life, but Bella is determined that she will live long enough to have the baby and be transformed into a vampire. Jacob runs off, and phases due to his anger. This accidentally reveals Bella's condition to the pack, and due to the lack of knowledge on human-vampire babies, the pack decides to kill the baby and Bella immediately. Jacob objects, and when Sam uses an alpha command to force Jacob into submission, Jacob accepts his bloodline as the true heir of the pack and breaks free of Sam's control. He then runs off to warn the Cullens of the pack's planned assault. However, while en route, Seth, one of the younger pack members, joins Jacob and makes note of the fact that neither of them can hear the others; they have formed their own pack. They warn the
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the main character Buffy Summers is the chosen Vampire Slayer, even though she does not want to be the chosen one, but there is always some type of danger in her town. As she is battling demons and vampires, she is struggling to live a normal life, but soon learns to embrace and accept her destiny. Buffy was a very popular show with seven seasons won two Emmy awards a Golden Satellite award and multiple Saturn awards. In every season Joss Whedon was able to incorporate something different to make each season stand out. A recurring theme throughout the episode “Hush” is that sometimes talking is not the most efficient way of communicating or showing affection.
Nonverbal communication can be shown by many different gestures, body movements, and understood by all the different channels. For example, when Dory believes that Marlin has entered her personal space by following her too closely she reacts by using proxemics to intimidate Marlin. Dory purposely enters Marlin’s personal space to show dominance and her gestures show “affect display.” Dory’s affect display is “the movements of the face that convey emotional meaning- the expressions that show anger and fear, happiness and surprise…” (DeVito 144) It is a nonver...
These novels tell the dark love story between Bella Swan, an average, somewhat shy high school student, and Edward Cullen, a mysterious and strong vampire. Rape culture is evident throughout these four novels. For example, when Bella’s best friend Jacob kisses her against her will, she tries to fight it and then gives up “acting on instinct…I opened my eyes and didn’t fight”. Charlie, Bella’s father, asked Jacob why Bella hit him, and when Jacob said “because I kissed her”, Charlie said “good job kid”. At another point in the novels, Bella admires the bruises on her skin after having sex with
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
Effective communication encompasses many concepts. For a leader to be effective, one must be able to build relationships between different parties. In order to build a good rapport, one must be able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of those involved, and within oneself. Acknowledging these differences will allow for a better collaboration between team members. A leader must also have the ability to put conflict resolution theories into practice. Allowing differing points of view may challenge the original idea and will make for a more thorough decision making process. Although this may seem counterproductive, it actually ensures the best possible outcome. One must be consistent in the message presented yet be flexible, approachable and maintain a positive attitude. Allowing for different perspectives to be heard will allow team members to feel valued. This flexibility helps to solidify the concept that everyone is in this together; thus establishing an environment where all team members can have a buy-in. Encouraging team members to voice opinions and give feedback produces an atmosphere of constructive give-and-take; a real t...
Working in teams provides an opportunity for individuals to come together and establish a rapport towards others within a group. Teamwork is classified as people with different strengths and skills who work together to achieve a common goal. When a team works well, specific objectives are fulfilled and satisfied. Teamwork plays a crucial role in implementing and fulfilling a common goal in a team project. Each member plays a role and takes on different responsibilities combined together.
