How much sleep is really needed? The average adult male needs seven and a half to nine hours of sleep each night. Sleep is a very important act in everyday life because it keeps the body healthy and stable, it keeps the mind focused for a full day, it alters feelings and emotions of the correct amount is not obtained, and it causes car accidents, sometimes fatal, when drivers are driving while sleep deprived.
Each person needs a different amount of sleep in order to keep their body healthy and stable. According to Smith, Robinson, and Segal, the average child, from five to twelve years of age, needs ten to eleven hours of sleep each night while teens only need eight and a half to ten hours of sleep each night. The average adult, eighteen years of age or older, needs seven and a half to nine hours of sleep each night. These studies by Smith, Robinson, and Segal are only the averages, so that means that an adult could make do each day on only six hours of sleep while another person may need ten hours. Therefore, each person’s body and mind need a different amount of sleep each night in order to function each day. “Nevertheless, it’s important to pay attention to your own individual needs by assessing how you feel on different amounts of sleep”(“How Much Sleep Do We Really”). Sometimes, the body can function with a little amount of sleep or maybe it needs a longer amount. It all depends on a specific person’s body at a particular time. Sleep deprivation (SD) is a common phenomenon encountered by many individuals with different professions. [3] These professions include healthcare, security and drivers working at night. [1] The average length of sleep that an individual needs is between 7 and 8.5h per day. [quoted in 1] However, this varies between individuals with different age and gender. Pilcher and Huffcutt found that both total and partial SD give adverse effects on human functioning. [2] Researchers have concluded that sleep deprivation affects cognitive performance [1,2], motor performance and mood of an individual. [2]
Health is a complex concept, and when we talk about health we refer to body health and to the health of the mind, the health of relationships between us and those around us, the spiritual health. Looking online on one of the additional resources recommended, www.nimh.nih.gov, I have noticed that one of the symptoms of most diseases that affect a person's mental health is lack of sleep. Lack of sleep not only worsens man's mental health, but also causes serious imbalances in metabolism, immunity, general mood, and last but not least, affects the ability of learning and memorizing among students. Today, about 20% of people will report that they get less that 6 hours of sleep a night on average for sleep. On average the human body needs at least 8 hours of sleep. The rate of Americans associated with sleep deprivation is constantly increasing as we move forward in the 20th century. Many things throughout life can cause sleep deprivation, which leads to many acute or chronic issues throughout your life.
Sleep is one of our basic needs to survive and to function in day to day operations, but not everyone needs the same amount of sleep. Some people can survive on very little sleep, i.e. five hours a night, and some people need a lot of sleep, to the extend that they are sleeping up to 10 to sometimes 15 hours a night (Nature, 2005). According to Wilson (2005) the general rule states that most people need from seven to eight hours of sleep. The deprivation of sleep in our society in continually increasing with the demands in society increasing work loads, the myth that a few hours of sleep is only necessary to function properly and that sleep is sometimes considered as killing time (Nature, 2005). Sometimes sleep deprivation is also caused by other situations like sleep disorders, i.e. sleep apnea, chronic insomnia or medical conditions such as stress (Wilson, 2005).
I was able to successfully complete four sleep pattern logs, including two week days and two weekend days. After comparing my sleep logs to each other, I believe that I have an adequate amount of sleep each day. Sleep is something that is important for growth, creative thinking, restoring and rebuilding memories, recuperation and protection of humans as individuals (Meyers, 98). Getting adequate sleep has great effects on our bodies.
One question that people seem to be unsure about is exactly how much sleep is enough sleep? In Inside Insomnia: How to Sleep Better Tonight, Dryer says that the ideal amount of sleep may vary from person to person. She states that while seven to eight hours may seem to be the accepted average, there are no fixed norms. Some people sleep two hours nightly, while others sleep nine to twelve hours nightly without complaint. She goes on to say that as long as the hours of sleep that one has gotten leaves them feeling energetic and alert the next morning, then that person has met their sleep needs.
Much of society mistakenly believes that each individual needs eight hours of sleep in order to have a full night’s rest. This is untrue because the amount of sleep you need has a large dependence on the many factors that influence healthy energy. Age is a large indicator of how much sleep is relevant to an individual. Studies done by Milner (2008), “Benefits of napping and an extended duration of recovery sleep on alertness and immune cells after acute sleep restriction” show that an adult needs nine hours a day in order to carry out work productively, feel rejuvenated, and maintain contented moods.
