In today’s modern and fast paced society, teenagers have had to rush through life and begin adulthood earlier than the generations before. Many teens have also been expected to make this step in life without the help of a parent or mature adult, because they are too busy with their own lives. The media has replaced parents’ jobs of teaching their children about life, and the media surrounds teens with mature themes which affect teenagers in a negative way. Many teenagers have lost a section of their lives by having to skip to adulthood where they are unprotected from many negative parts of this world. I agree with David Elkind that “teenagers have lost their privileged position…” and that unlike generations of teenagers before, this generation has had to rush into an adult world. These young adults deal with excessive, everyday stress, the corrupted media’s influence, and greater access to drugs and alcohol in school, which are all forcing these teenagers to grow up faster and live in an adult world.
Everyday, teenagers have to struggle with balancing school, homework, extracurricular activities, and many other things that fill their hectic lives. These teenagers have had to mature in order to manage their time and complete all their work that has to be done. Especially with their parents having to live in their own busy, over scheduled lives, teenagers have had to learn to do and plan things on their own, without the support of parents. I have experienced the chaos of adult life myself, and sometimes I am so stressed I get to the point of tears, because there are so many things to be done in a limited amount of time. American culture in today’s society portrays teenagers as mature adults, and no longer as a privileged and protected generation where a unique culture is created. Teenagers do not have a leisurely and relaxed life, but have similar stresses, issues, and realities that adults deal with. Teens in high school are now expected to be matured and able to face the challenges of the real world in our fast changing society. The existence of theft, violence, illegal substances, and other negative influences in high schools create an adult environment that modern teenagers have to deal with every day. These negative influences and circumstances many teens experience make them turn into adults faster than ever before.
Leon Botstein, the author of “Let Teenagers Try Adulthood,” serves as the president of Bard College, as well as a professor of arts and humanities. Botstein wrote this article after the tragic shootings at Columbine high school in 1999. This event triggered something inside Botstein causing him to think negatively about the American high school system. In the article “Let Teenagers Try Adulthood,” Botstein explains, in his own words, of the corrupt happenings of present day American high school (368-369). Although Botstein may have high credentials, he provides no evidence to support his negative claims and opinions about teenagers and American high schools.
Teenagers already have to deal with being at high school for 6+ hours but also have to do homework (which can be can also be 6+ hours with AP classes). Teenagers also often have to deal with sports, jobs, clubs, and then there’s familial issues they have to deal with. Community service work should not interfere with sleep or school work. There are things every year that puts pressure on students. Freshman year being the first year of high school so they’re just learning how it works. Sophomore year can be the toughest for most being the transition after freshman year and dealing with tougher classes for the first time. Since, the students take college courses while in high school, they’re not really mature at that age because they’ve been used to being watched all the time. So, when they get freedom; either it spoils them or makes them mature before age. For example, in this age, everyone likes partying and stuff and when there’s no one to stop you, you’re definitely going to waste your time on all this childish stuff (Although having fun isn’t a bad thing but like someone said, “excess of everything is bad”). Many people like to go wild at this age but not all of them are same. Some try to manipulate their time for their best. Because they know that these charms are not going to last forever. American teenagers are often criticized for being irresponsible and immature. Some in the older generation will also state that kids are taking too long to move out of the house. These views of young adults are pessimistic and demeaning to the current generation. While the adolescent stage has been extended, American kids are taking an ample amount of time to accept the responsibilities of becoming an adult.
Schooling has a lot of problems that need a lot of solutions. Many of these problems stem from the fact that the American school system is notorious for wasting the time of students and teachers. Students rarely get the chances to learn and experience topics that not only interest them but are also topics that have the potential for being important in their future careers. Time is also wasted during standardized tests that do not give American students an accurate representation of their intelligence compared to the intelligence of others worldwide.
Did you know that elephant owners in Asia can keep their elephants in their yard with a simple piece of twine and a post in the ground? I’m sure you’re probably thinking, “How is that possible? Elephants are strong, smart, and have potential to do huge things.” The answer has nothing to do with the twine and the post; but it has everything to do with the twine around the elephant’s mind. The thing is, teenagers are a lot like elephants. We are strong, smart, and have incredible potential, but somehow we are held back by a tiny piece of string, held back by a lie; the lie that teenagers are rebellious, good for nothing, lazy bums. Today I am going to be talking about how this lie affects the relationship between adults and teenagers, the relationship between God and teenagers, and finally the relationships teenagers have with each other. If everybody, adults and teenagers alike, work together we can get rid of this horrible lie.
Youth of today are taking longer to complete the transition into adulthood compared to youth of twenty-five years ago. Changes in education and the benefit system may be responsible for the altered state of transition in current youth (Keep, 2011) which is an assumption that will be explored. In regards to this; this essay will cover youth transition and will look at how the restructuring of polices and legislations have affected youths transition in to adulthood. Furthermore the manner in which political ideologies and perspectives have altered factors such as education, employment, housing and benefits will be examined. Once a full explanation has been provided; the fundamental question that needs to be answered is; are the teenagers of today embattled or empowered?

Despite much popular mythology about 'the generation gap', such standards are startlingly similar to parental values, though the similarities are masked by different youth styles or expressions. Such groupings clearly have a developmental potential in enabling young people to make the social adjustments necessary for them to operate in adult society.
No matter which culture is examined, there are many different aspects to the well-being of the teenager. Many important aspects of well-being concern physical traits or habits, such as hygiene, body weight, and appearance (Feldman, 2012). Other aspects of well-being involve cognitive development, such as an adolescents ability to perform in school or think in shades of gray. The final aspect of well-being examines social and personality development, for example, how teenagers socially interact, their emotional state, and abuses of illicit substances (Feldman, 2012). In all of these aspects, an adolescent can find their identity and a sense of well-being, but they can also experience Erikson’s definition of crisis. That is why the adolescent age group must strive to maintain a strong sense of well-being while searching for their identity.
In America, the society runs on what teenagers want. From Nicki Minaj to the junior section at Sears, most of what the people see, hear, or touch is aimed at the teenagers. Being an adolescent is probably the most exciting and most popular time period in a person’s life. The teens seem to have it all, but what about the parents who raise them? The parents of the teenagers never get any credit during this time period, although they have every right to. Parents and teenagers should strive for a strong, lasting relationship for these years, though most times there isn’t one. The relationship between teenagers and parents is the most vital bond in the family because this relationship should and will prepare them for the next step in life.
Teens today face a lot of pressure. Many students deal with difficult life situations that hinder them from focusing on their futures. This can lead to a loss of interest in school and school events, such as a sports, clubs, or after school programs. Teens start to prioritize other things over their education. Every year, over 1.2 million students will leave school without earning a high school diploma in the United States alone (“11”). That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day (“11”). The United States, which used to have the highest graduation rates of any country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries (“11”). Students may not realize that by dropping out of high school they are more likely to commit crimes, become parents at a young age, use and abuse alcohol and drugs, and live in poverty (“Drop”). While most parents realize there are normal struggles between parents and teens as their sons and daughters struggle for independence and identity, they are often shocked by the length and intensity of the conflict. They are stunned by apparent rejection of some of their most sacred values and confused by their teenagers "acting up" and "acting out." In attempting to become psychologically independent of their parents, teens often attempt to move completely away from any control or influence by their parents.
