‘The word skeleton comes from the Greek word skeletos, meaning “dried up”. The parts of the skeletal system the bones and other structures that make up the joints of the skeleton are anything but dried up. Strong yet light, the skeletal system is made up of living material, with networks of blood vessels running throughout.’ Humans are born with approximately 300 bones and at skeletal maturity this amount will decrease to around 206 as bones eventually fuse together. The body’s bones make up the skeleton, a solid structure in which the body is built whole. Second to the teeth the bones are the hardest tissue inside the body. Intramembranous ossification mainly occurs during the formation of the flat bones of the skull, as well as the mandible, maxilla, and clavicles. The bone is formed from connective tissue such as mesenchyme tissue rather than from cartilage. The bone is formed from connective tissue such as mesenchyme tissue. Stem cells, mesenchymal initiate the process of intramembranous ossification. A small cluster of mesenchymal cells will begin to replicate and form a group of cells called a nidus. Once the nidus is created the mesenchymal cells will no long replicate within. Certain mesenchymal cells will offset into osteoblasts, which line up around the surface of a spicule (bony matrix) and secrete osteoid increasing its size. Once trapped within the bone matrix osteoid transform into osteocyte that occupies a chamber called a lacuna. As this growth continues the spicules become trabeculae. With the continuing growth, trabeculae become interconnected and woven bone is then formed. This network of trabeculae can also be referred to as primary spongiosa. Forming around the periosteum, osteogenic cells originate which then increase the growth and a bone collar form. Eventually the woven bone is replaced by lamellar bone. Intramembranous ossification is the process in which the flat bones of the cranium ad clavicles are made. This type of ossification is broken up into several different steps. In each of these steps, there are various types of cells that do unique things to aid in ossification. All of these different cells stem from one cell known as a Mesenchymal cell. This cell is a type of stem cell that can differentiate into all of the different connective tissue cells. Differentiation is a characteristic of these cells that allows them to transform into various cells during the growth process; this is aided by methylation. So far, various techniques have been used for reconstruction and regeneration of maxillary and mandibular bone defects. Autogenous bone grafting, guided bone regeneration (GBR), distraction osteogenesis and nerve transpositioning are among these regenerative techniques (1-8). Decision making for the treatment could be influenced by the type, size and location of the bone defects (2, 3, 9, 10). GBR had high success rate in treating small alveolar defects such as dehiscence or fenestration. Regenerative bony walls around the defect with ingrowing blood vessels can begin osteogenesis (11) larger bone defects with insufficient regenerative walls and an low quality avascular bed need varied amount of autogeneous bone graft from extra oral or intra oral donor sites, however, the patient may suffer from complications in donor site as well as bone graft resorption.(10, 12-15)

Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a systemic, debilitating disease of the skeleton, characterized by significantly decreased bone mass in combination with the deterioration of bone microarchitecture. Osteoporosis has three types of categories, the first category is type 1 which occurs in women after menopause and results from declining levels of estrogen and other sex hormones in the body, this could also occur in men due to low levels of the sex hormone testosterone. Type 2 is called Senile Osteoporosis, which occurs in elderly men as well as elderly women because of decreased bone formation due to aging. Type 3 is caused by long-term use of medication, usually with steroids and drugs, to treat elipsy. Osteoporosis, which literally means “Porous Bone”, is a disease in which the density and quality of bone are reduced (Kackowski, 2013).
Today, there is an enormous amount of understanding of the anatomy of bone formation than it was available to Duhamel du Monceau and John Hunter when they made the then prolific theories of bone growth anatomy. Duhamel proved, in 1742, that the bone is first formed in the periosteum and grows in superposing layers. Hunter, through his experiments showed that bone grows in length by juxtaposing layers and the medullary cavity (Trabecular bone) grows by resorption of inner layers of bone. Osteoclasts are responsible for the breaking down of tissue. The osteoblasts and osteoclasts are both responsible for remodeling and rebuilding of bones as we grow and age. The production of osteoclasts for resorption is initiated by the hormone, the parathyroid hormone. A child’s motor development is more of a slower progress, from going to gross motor skills to more fine motor skills in a few months while physical development is an apparent process. The environment affects children in their physical and motor growth, as they learn and adapt to new stimuli everyday as they develop. Separately, these developments start at different times, but function hand in hand as a child grows. Mastering fine motor skills is a very important process needed for physical and cognitive development. It is during early childhood that most children develop these skills, however there are many children that do not. A young child’s fine motor skills are developed through a vast array of activities that aide the child in doing little things such as grasping a toy as an infant, and buttoning buttons as a toddler or tying shoes when they are a preschooler. Fine motor development is the development of the small muscles in the hands and fingers. Many crucial daily activities depend on strong motor skills, such as writing, using eating utensils and getting dressed, among other things. Physical and motor development are two similar but different areas that describe child development. Physical development encompasses all of the various changes a child's body goes through. Those changes include height, weight, and brain development. Motor development is the development of control over the body. This control would involve developing reflexes such as blinking, large motor skills like walking, and fine motor skills like manipulating their fingers to pick up small objects like Cheerios. It is important to objectively study physical and motor development in children to gain knowledge on what characteristics are considered typical for each age and stage of development. This will enable me to be aware of when a child or children are developing at an irregular pace, and devise recommendations or find experiences and other resources that can aid in stimulating their development and to work towards closing achievement gaps. This particular assignment was to observe the selected child and reaffirm the importance of studying physical and motor development, and to develop ideas on how to involve it in my work as an early childhood professional.
