As a human service professional, there may be times when situations may emerge and an individual might be uncertain of the proper action to take. A human service professional must look at all points of view. In addition, they must establish a list of problems and examine the multiple viewpoints. Professional helpers who administer the client with autonomy must encourage self-reliance and support the client’s independence. For example, Lisa is 20 years old pregnant and is in denial of being addicted to heroin. Lisa arrived at her appointment to see her social worker Janice with her aunt. Before attending the appointment her aunt reported to the social worker that her niece just found out that she is three months pregnant and she is addicted to heroin. The aunt would like for her niece to enter a twelve step program to get clean before having her baby. Janice met with Lisa and her aunt notice and she recognized that Lisa was a little high. She discussed with Lisa of the idea of entering in a twelve program, she became very distraught and hostile. In the Human Service professional we are bound by a code of ethics, we have a duty to our clients to help them during a crisis. When faced with dilemma’s we can use this code to help in decisions, to distinguish right or wrong, and set a standard on how we should conduct ourselves. It is standard to ensure people that are in a venerable state are treated with dignity, and respect. In this Human Service field we have three Associations that have a code of ethics in place to help us in our profession.
