What is dilemma? Dilemma means when one has to select a choice in a difficult situation. Now what is ethics? Ethic means selection between rights things and wrong things and knowingly chooses the right side of the situation. In today’s society we are facing ethical dilemma on regular basis which force us to use our judgment relevant to the problems. According to the philosopher 's point of view our moral values helps to choose the right path and teach us to behave in the society. Similar concept applies in business too, we have to select between right and wrong thing and be on the right side. Ethical direction is really important when crisis occurs at workplace. During this kind of crisis workers and leaders has to stay strong in order to get through the situation. In the Film we saw a character name Nick who is the spokesman of the tobacco company. He advertises the tobacco company in a positive way to gain the profit. His job is to fool the people and sell the product. However he doesn’t only fool the public he plays the same word game with his son too. In one of the scene of the Nick’s son Joey asks him about the disadvantage of the tobacco. In this situation Nick gets stuck in to dilemma whether to the truth to his son or plays the same word game by saving his job’s reality and continuing building good relationship with his son. Ethical dilemma is a situation where people have to make complex decisions and are influenced based on personal interests, social environment or norms, and religious beliefs (“Strategic Leadership”, n.d.). Leaders and managers in the company should set guidelines to ensure employees are aware and have a better chance to solve and make ethical decisions. Employees are also responsible for understanding their ethical obligations in order to maintain a positive work environment. The film presents how industries, media and the government interact to influence the consumers’ decision. While the use of rhetoric, such as fallacies and twisted truths, is evident throughout the film, it is most evident midway when the chief spokesman, Nick Naylor, assists his son with his assignment. The son, Joey Naylor, enquires why the American government is the best and in response, the father argues it is because of America’s ‘endless appeals system’ (Thank you for smoking). His response seamlessly captures the tone of the movie as much as it represents the extensive use of a combination of fallacious arguments and twisted truths. The tobacco industry is a very unethical industry, due to the long term effects of tobacco on humans. The industry also does not assess the ethical and social responsibility the best way that it should. There are many factors that make the industry unethical; some of the reasons are the way the cigarette companies around the world Advertise, the way governments and cigarette companies make a huge profit from the sales of cigarettes, and the labeling health risks. I do believe however that there is something that the tobacco companies can do to better their strategy as far as their ethics go. I think that they should, always be looking for the best interest on their consumers, as well as advertise strictly on the effects that the cigarettes and what the people are getting for their money.
