Single Parenting Mental Illness

I belong to a society where being a single woman, and mental illnesses are both considered as stigmas. I also happened to be raised in circumstances where I had to deal with both situations.

My mother raised me on her own. In a culture which paints the single parent in the most negative light, she instilled fearlessness and positivity in me. My father suffered from bipolar disorder, but denial kept him from seeking the proper help which eventually led to the breakdown of my parent’s marriage. I think it would be fair to say that ever since I have been old enough to understand the circumstances which lead to my upbringing I have wanted to explore and attempt to help those who suffer from mental illness.
