She got to go on a Junior Elite team at the age of 6. Simone also claimed a record of 3 straight world titles. She even won 14 total world championship medals. Simone had a very busy life. Simone had to be homeschooled in high school because she trained so much every day she would miss school a lot. On Monday and Wednesday she trains from 12:30 to 5:30, and on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Fridays she trains from 9:00 to 1:00. Whenever she falls down she comes right back up and never ever gives up. One of her best accomplishments was the 2016 Rio Olympics. Simone was so good in gymnastics, that she could have competed in the 2012 Olympics at a young age, however her coach said she would have to turn 16 to compete so she would have to wait for another four years to be in the Olympics. So she could not compete. Simone led her team , the final five ,to win the Olympics. Simone also has a special quote for the people who inspire her: “If you're having fun, that's when the best memories are built.” Simone’s signature move is a double flip with a half twist. Simone was born with a talent. She is America's top gymnast. Simone worked so hard and so long . When Simone was born, nobody knew that she was going to inspire people with her skills or with her talent. She had a hard time adjusting to a new life. She even had to leave two of her siblings behind. Despite her difficult past, Simone still followed her dreams and never
Gabby Douglas was the first African-American female gymnast in Olympic history to become the individual All-Around champion. In the 2012 Olympic Games, she won gold in the team competition and the individual competition. She is a gymnastics phenom. From the beginning of her career to where she is today, she has been a true trooper through everything. Gabrielle Douglas is an inspiration to me and many others because she overcame being homeless, moved in with a new family, and won Olympic gold in gymnastics.

“Being in such an intense sport, surrounded by people in the same boat as me, has really brought me closer to my team. We get to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.” They push her to become the best gymnast she can be; she describes her team as a family. They cheer each other on and are the biggest support system to make her better. Being around the same group of people nearly every day through their struggles and successes has really brought the athletes of the Classic closer together.
Have you ever just thought and engaged on curiosity on how it feels like to stand and balance on hands of people? Being thrown high in the air with just trusting three people to catch you? Lifting people together while exhibiting strength and trusting that the stunt won’t completely fall? Lastly, having the guts to cheer, shout and to put on that cheerful smile despite all the pain and sacrifices you made just to complete the routine? These people are extraordinary athletes. These athletes just don’t perform difficult stunts but they also uniquely combine the factor of performing and getting the crowd’s attention through their routine. They are called Cheerleaders. Most of the people who aren’t familiar of the content of the sport would think that Cheerleading is just for the purpose of performing and cheering for their own team or school, but to Cheerleaders, it’s more than just those conditions. It’s just something more special than that. It’s a vision and of course, pure passion.
Gabrielle Douglas, also referred to as Gabby, is the 16-year-old African American woman who made history by winning a gold medal in the individual all-around gymnastics portion of the 2012 Olympic event. Instead of acknowledging the fact that Douglas became the first African-American woman to win that particular competition, people on social media sites joked on how she was in need of a relaxer for her hair. Tiya Miles, the writer of “Why focus on Gabby Douglas’ hair?,” strongly states her opinion about the comments toward the situation. Her argument about the topic is overall strong and informative because it gives the reader many points-of-view to acknowledge before he or she develops an opinion. Miles states that criticizing comments made Gabby Douglas’ achievement an undermined factor. She stresses that Douglas’ hair is a n...
Kerri Strug is remembered today for her performance at the 1996 Summer Olympics, but very few people know the rest of her story. Kerri was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. The Strugs were a family of five, and Kerri was the youngest. She had both an older brother and an older sister. Although Kerri had many outstanding accomplishments as a gymnast, her vault on July 23, 1996, earned her a place in gymnastics’ history. Kerri was limping because on her first attempt she fell and sprained her left ankle. After she finished somersaulting through the air, Kerri stuck the landing on one foot and then collapsed in tears. Kerri’s story is one of great courage (“Heart” 12).
Glamour and money are not the only components surrounding sports; many athletes experience what can be considered the dark side of sports. In the article The Meaning of Serena Williams by Claudia Rankine, some not so glamorous aspects of her life are highlighted. One of the most prominent rough parts of her life includes the racism that constantly surrounded her as an athlete. Whether it be the name calling and humiliation, or being paid less compared to a white woman, Serena has endured it all through her career; it is how she handles such cases that promotes her positive character.
Child’s birth name was Julia Carolyn Williams on August 15, 1912 in Pasadena, California. She was the eldest of three children; Dorothy Dean and a brother John III. I scramble upstairs with a pillow in hand and plop myself down in front of the VCR. I press the play button and resume the movie. I will sit here for over an hour, mesmerized by the combination of ice and skates. A few tears may roll down my cheeks as I am secretly being touched by this love story.
But according to Dilley-Knoles in “Making the Grade: Academic Success in Today’s Athlete,” he seems to believe the total opposite. He points out “attention has not always been solely about games and competitions” apparently the “spotlight” has recently been “redirected to academics (Dilley-Knoles). Today, athletes wanting to participate in athletics have to meet specific criteria before being on a team of some sort in high-school (Dilley-Knoles). Knoles explains how over the last few years, the National Collegiate Athletic (NCAA) has created certain standards for academic performance for those students who are in sports (Dilley-Knoles). Certain programs have been created to reward sport teams that do well academically, and penalizing those that don’t (Dilley-Knoles). Although Gabby Douglass was the first women of color “of any nationality and the first African-American gymnast in Olympic history” to become the “Individual All-Around Champion,” I believe the photo shows that athletics was more important than academics (Mike). The young girl below her suggests that she’s more focused on school because she might have not had the same opportunity as Gabby did. Athletes, similar to Gabby, find the pursuit of athletics to be “lucrative” which is something that society values through money (Kannan). In “Which is more important, sports or academics, and how can the choice are

"Whoosh!" was the sound of the wind blowing into his face as he raced through the mountain's monstrous decent. As he raced through the Pyrenees, he thought about everything that had occurred in the past couple of years of his life. He felt his heart pounding as he pedaled through the dirt and rocks. Cycling is a tough sport that only certain athletes can endure. The long and painful climbs up a 2,000 foot hill are not the easiest things to do, but certain athletes have done well enough to call themselves champions of the sport. Lance Armstrong has succeeded so many times in this strenuous sport, that he has earned his title as the greatest cyclist. Lance was born on September 18, 1971 in a tiny suburb of Dallas, Texas called Oak Cliff. Because his mother was pregnant with him when she was only seventeen years old, Lance grew up without a father figure, but to him it did not matter. Soon after, when he turned three, his mother Linda Mooneyham married Terry Armstrong who later became Lance's new stepfather. With the financial aid of Mr. Armstrong, Lance's mother moved the family into a more upscale suburb called Plano, where Lance grew up. Lance's mother was not the wealthiest woman alive, yet she always found ways to give Lance what he needed.
Kristi Yamaguchi has also been able to overcome diversity in the world of skating. Being the first ever figure skater of American-Asian descent to win an Olympic gold medal, she showed people that typecasting or prejudice would not exist in figure skating. She demonstrated tha...
Not only is Sasha Uskov a criminal from his actions, his thoughts and behavior confirm that this is his true personality. To begin with, Sasha doesn’t accept the blame for himself. The story states, “He was not blame; it was the fault of the circumstances,” By saying this, he is trying to move the blame off of himself in an attempt to justify his actions. Sasha also thinks the whole issue isn’t a big deal because everyone does it and it’s normal to forge a person's name. This is not the case and Sasha is only attempting to convince himself that his criminal acts are perfectly ordinary. Secondly, Sasha’s nonchalant thoughts only prove his criminal nature. A moral person would care, if they feel they are truly innocent of charges, about whether
