An apostle is an messenger. Simon Peter, Andrew, James son of Zebedee, John, Philip, and Bartholomew were key Apostles that had dedication to serve Jesus and carry out Jesus’ mission. Jesus selected them because he thought they were able to disciple to his followers and be an example of Him. The Apostles were important foundation stones of the Church and their faithfulness to the Church was shown throughout their lifetime. Some of Jesus’ Apostles denied and betrayed him, hurting Jesus, not his true followers but some didn’t and stayed with Jesus through all the hardship. Simon Peter, the first disciple and one of the most known disciples, had much faith and strength but also much weakness and shortcomings throughout his lifetime. Impulsive and emotional, Peter is best known for denying Jesus when the pressure was on. Even so, as a disciple he was dearly loved by Christ, holding a special place among the twelve. He lived in Bethsaida and Capernaum and was a fisherman before Jesus called him. He knew his mission was to point people to the Messiah. Andrew lived in the shadow of his brother, Simon Peter through most of his life. Even though Andrew was less famous than his brother, he led Peter to Christ and many others. During Jesus’ ministry he used five loaves of bread from a boy, brought forth by Andrew, to feed the five thousand people who had gathered to hear the word of God. Andrew was a person who thirsted for truth and found it in the living water of Jesus Christ. Andrew died a martyr by Aegeas, crucified on an X-shaped cross, which is still called Saint Andrew's cross and is one of his apostolic symbols. The X-shaped cross also meant a symbol of two crossed fish because he was formerly a fisherman. He wanted to be different than Jesus by not having the same shape
