Everyone has done something they wish they had never done before. The outcome may be good or bad. Sometimes you might be happy with what you did and think nothing bad will happen after. These undesired consequences are what we fear when we decide to do something whether we like it or not. This is what these two stories have in common by two different author’s. In Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, Liesel is adopted by a new family after her brother had past. She cannot read but she decided she wants to and starts to steal books for herself so she could learn. In “The Book Thief” Liesel, the main character, lies about things. As an example, she lies about being able to read the test she was taking. In TBITSP, Bruno lies about what he does outside when really he goes to see a Jew somewhere he isn't allowed to be close to. For Liesel, in the text she says that she can read what the paper says; of course Sister Maria says she cannot and doesn’t believe her. She goes up and reads it,the problem is… she restated a line from “The Grave Digger's Handbook.” Sister Maria told her, “Liesel-the corridor.” Meaning that she is being punished. The other kids were laughing at her because she couldn’t read unlike everyone else who could. In TBITSP, there is one moment where Bruno is interrogated by Lieutenant Kotler by asking, “Do you know this boy” in a loud voice. Bruno does know this boy and is his friend. Instead of saying yes… he lies and said no. His friend; he hadn’t seen him in almost week because of what happened until the next time he went to the fence where they meet. In The Book Thief, author Markus Zusak tells the tragic story of Liesel Meminger and her experiences in 1939 Nazi Germany. Although it is considered wrong to tell lies, it seems that literature has offered us situations where telling lies isn’t necessarily bad. Of course, lying often has a tragic outcome, but not always for the person or people who told the lie or lies. Oftentimes, these unfortunate outcomes are directed at the person about whom the lie was told. Furthermore, these stories have explained that dishonesty can result in success for both the liar and the target. Maybe we have been teaching the wrong values to our children.
The Book Thief and Nazi Germany The heavily proclaimed novel “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak is a great story that can help you understand what living in Nazi Germany was like. Throughout the story, the main character, Liesel goes through many hardships to cope with a new life in a new town and to come to the recognition of what the Nazi party is. Liesel was given up for adoption after her mother gave her away to a new family, who seemed harsh at first, but ended up being the people who taught her all the things she needed to know. Life with the new family didn’t start off good, but the came to love them and her new friend, Rudy.

Lying is an issue that has been debated on for a long time. Some people believe that lying is sometimes ok in certain circumstances. Some people believe lying is always acceptable. In contrast, some believe lying is always bad. Keeping all other’s opinions in mind, I believe that lying is a deficient way of solving problems and is a bad thing. I claim that only certain situations allow the usage of lies and that otherwise, lying is bad. Dishonesty is bad because it makes it harder to serve justice, harms the liar individually, and messes up records. Furthermore, it should only be said to protect someone from grave danger.

The main character Harvey Swick couldn’t complete his duties, missing the help of the illustrations. The minor, major, and main characters all had their own unique and interesting pictures. The protagonist, Liesel Meminger, lives with a foster family, the Hubermann's, and has a deep love for literature. However, at the time, books are hard to come by so Liesel is forced to steal books from Nazi book burnings and the Mayor’s library. Liesel’s reading allows her to escape from the trying times of the war to the imaginary worlds of books. However, Liesel as Liesel matures, she discovers that books and words can not only be used for good, but for evil as well. The books that Liesel discovers throughout the novel directly contribute to Liesel’s growth as a human being and come to define her morals for life.

In The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, beauty and brutality is seen in many of the characters. Rudy, Liesel, and Rosa display examples of beauty and brutality often without realizing what exactly they are doing, because it is a part of their human nature. Zusak not only uses his characters, but also the setting of the novel in Nazi Germany to allude to his theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature. The time in which the novel is set, during World War II, displays great examples of beauty and brutality, such as the mistreatment of the Jews. As a result of this time period, the characters have to go through troubling times, which reveals their beautiful and brutal nature in certain circumstances. Zusak uses his characters and their experiences to demonstrate the theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature in the novel.
Throughout history, there have been many noteworthy events that have happened. While there are many sources that can explain these events, historical fiction novels are some of the best ways to do so, as they provide insight on the subject matter, and make you feel connected to the people that have gone through it. An example of a historical fiction that I have just read is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, a story about the life of a German boy who becomes friends with a Jewish boy in a concentration camp during the holocaust. The author of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas portrays the historical period well,and uses many details from the real life holocaust to make his story more believable. This book is a classic, and is a very good look on how it feels to be living in Nazi Germany.
In conclusion, the messages these stories have been trying to convey have not changed much but the way they are connecting to the audience has. Dr. Seuss conveys his message by allowing young Gerald McGrew to become more empowered and change things through his own free will; whereas, Daywalt uses crayons to show that they can be used for anything and don’t have to be used for things that are typically colored in a specific way. But, we can see that though the messages are the same the ways that the illustrations are different show the greatest difference between the two stories and how they connect to their audiences. Dr. Seuss shows that a child 's creativity is unlimited and can create things that haven’t been thought of. However, Daywalt is trying to tell his audience that is it okay to be creative and change things as you wish.
As time evolves, so do the words that are essential for our everyday survival. The most obvious difference between humans and animals is our ability to master the art of speech. Often, people will say the “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, a simple nursery rhyme that helps ease a bullied child from abusive words and taunts. But does that really help cure the emotional pain? Words can illuminate and motivate the minds of people but can also shadow their self-esteem through psychological trauma. In The Book Thief, we see how fundamental words were to shape the reality of millions of people caught in the fire of World War II.
