Despite the increase in awareness against discrimination, racism has proved to be a challenge in most developed and developing countries. Racism is a form of discrimination where a person is unfairly treated due to his or her skin color. Discrimination based on the outward appearance of a person can also be defined as a halo effect in relation to the personality of a person. In the short stories, “The Birthmark” and “Battle Royale” discrimination based on the outside appearance of characters is significant.
Battle Royal starts with a narration from about a person who seeks to define himself by seeking answers from other people. The narrator realizes earlier that it is only himself who has the power to control his destiny in discovering his

past. The story talks about blind men who besides the narrator, are described as those that discriminate against him. The narrator seeks to gather information about his life and that of his grandparents who are recorded as ex-slaves eighty five years from the time of narration (Ellison, 1995). The narrator who is the main character in the story, is affected by this freedom which rhetorically kept African-American and the whites in United States separate just like fingers on the hand are. The Birthmark story talks of a brilliant scientific named Aylmer and is the main character in the story (Hawthorne, 1959). Aylmer gets married to a beautiful wife by the name Georgiana who he abandons his work in order he can get married. Georgiana happens to have a curious birthmark which most men confessed made her more beautiful but envious women perceived it quite differently. Aylmer at one point asks his wife if she ever thought of getting rid of the birthmark. In addition, Aylmer found the birthmark to be the only flaw in his wife`s stunning beauty. The story develops after, Georgiana realized that her husband was serious with his question. Having in mind that Aylmer was a brilliant scientist, she knew that if it was possible that he could work to find a solution to the mark. This point brings us to the history behind the existence of the birthmark. Georgiana in an attempt to answer or in the case to give explanations to the reasons she would not have the birthmark removed; she discloses the discrimination that she experiences because of the mark. Georgiana, is disappointed with her husband who terms the mark as shocking. Georgiana also confesses that in the past, she has received comments about the mark from people who termed it as charm. In Battle Royal, the narrator finds some information from his grandfather who is described as a very hardworking man. The grandfather passes this information on his deathbed, the narrator however finds the information to be disturbing tough it is termed as an advice. The information contradicts the old man`s reputation as a hardworking man living conventional life by depicting him as one who is dangerous and could cause trouble. The narrator who clearly is a black man is haunted by the final words of his Grandfather throughout the story. The narrator is impressed by the fact that he finds favor in the eyes of the white. The reason behind the disguise in the narrators name and one reason why we never get to know him is because of the theme “Invisible Man’. This is the main title of the novel and as symbolic as it is, the author intentionally refuses to expose the narrators name for the story to complement the title. Georgiana is depicted as a woman who with high esteem in that although she receives mixed reaction about a mark on her cheek, she lets none of that into her (Montgomery, 2006). However, her husband Aylmer who is a scientist and philosopher is disgusted by the mark. Aylmer justifies his actions by describing the mark as being symbolic of mortality and is determined to let the mark disappear. Georgiana is hurt by her husband`s sentiments to an extent that she cries which reminds her of her past.
Aminadab comes into the limelight when the mark on Georgiana`s face starts to fade through his hoarse chuckle which was familiar to Aylmer. Aminadab is also described as Aylmer`s servant, he is however not mentioned anymore in the story except in the end after the death of Aylmer when his chuckle comes again. He is also depicted as being strong, grubby and is very active though he is also depicted as being disgusted by Aylmer`s obsession about the birthmark on Georgiana`s cheek.
The point of view employed in both stories plays a major role in helping us interpret the message in the stories. In Battle Royal, first person point of view is employed which allows us to get insights about the narrators early life and his mission in the story. This point of view is employed to give the viewer`s information on the feelings of the narrator, his opinions as well as influence the reader`s opinion about the story. If this point of view was to change, then the story would change as well as it would be hard to get the feelings that the narrator

uses. Contrary to the point of view in “Battle Royal”, “The Birthmark” employs third person point of view. This direction symbolically explains the concept behind the controversial crimson hand. The point of view in this story also brings out the theme that while man can destroy he has no power to create. The third person omniscient point of view that the story embraces enables the author to effectively explain the characters. The author is able to critically express the character`s feelings, opinions and thoughts which adds insights into understanding the text. The point of view also enables the author deliver information and eliminate bias. Battle Royal is full of symbolism in many different ways but most significantly, the story is symbolic of the struggle that the African-Americans had to go through in the struggle for independence.
The hardships that the narrators experiences in delivering his speech, symbolizes the hardships that the blacks went through. The naked blonde who danced in front of men before the fight is symbolic of other side of women who were viewed as the minority. The colors of the American flag painted on the woman`s body signified that the whites controlled the blacks. The circus in the young man`s dream at the end of the story symbolizes that the black boys in the dream are treated as
animals. Georgiana`s birthmark is used to symbolize mortality. It is used significantly by the narrator to indicate that nature is flawed in some way and as a reminder that everything must eventually die. The mark also marks Georgiana as mortal and flaws her beauty as the only blemish on the otherwise perfect skin (Hawthorne, 1959). Aylmer perception about the birthmark is that, since her skin is perfect, any mark on it is shocking. Alchemy means everything to Aylmer in that he feels he can fix everything that is not perfect which he compromises over his love. Battle Royal is made up of the themes of discrimination, racism and anger. The author, Ralph Ellison who wrote the story is trying to express his opinion on social issues which are very important but are regularly ignored. The Birthmark portrays the themes of love, guilt and science which covers the life of Aylmer and Georgiana. The author is addressing the social conflicts in marriage which is common in most families. Fear in Battle royal is evident in the African-American`s fear of not conducting themselves in the way the whites expects of them. The fear is an example of discrimination tool that people live in fear in their own country. Georgiana overcomes her fears as a woman and faces her husband who is in a contradicting view of the birthmark on her face. Despite the increase in the awareness against discrimination, racism still remains as a challenge to most developing and developed countries.
The symbol feet represent political action simply for how they were demonstrated amongst this graphic memoir. The cinematic techniques shown provide the whole meaning of the book series and its title. Feet are used throughout the book, showing that the people who marched to influence desegregation. The sign saying counter closed is an object that expresses a discriminative feeling. Simply for putting these signs when African Americans sat down to be served, immediately the servers told them they were not to be served. Bar stools or lunch counter are also symbols with a substantial meaning of segregation. At diners usually customers are treated first come first serve. But when it came to African Americans, they were asked to leave even if they sat down on the bar stools. Lewis and his companions express the feeling of humiliation. Buses also objects with symbolic meaning of seclusion. In every public transportation provided, races were always divided. Either if it was the bus to bring people from town to town, or children who went to school. The court house is also a meaningful object with a feeling of isolation. In the south, court houses gave no justice to ones who were anything other than white. If any black person was convicted of a crime, they were considered guilty no matter
At first, the boys are taken to a room where a nude woman is dancing. When the boys turn their heads away, they are yelled at for not looking. The tone of the rebuke implies that the blacks were not entitled to most of the ‘good’ things being white could bring them and that they weren’t really good enough for them. The boys then compete in the Battle Royal. This classic example of symbolism shows the fight African Americans have been putting up against an oppressive system over time and how it was necessary to persevere and have courage even when hope diminished. The boys fiercely beat one another. This may perhaps also represent in some small part the extent to which a united comm...
For many year humans have been trying to fight against discrimination in their communities, but it's an uphill battle that doesn’t seem like it’s been fully wiped out yet in our society. Discrimination and Prejudice has been a key issue that has affected many people around the world. In the movie that we saw in class, “My Cousin Vinny” (1992) it focused on these key issues of prejudice, discrimination, stereotypes and even eye witness testimonies. In the movie it focuses on these key issues while bringing a little humor to the viewers. In this paper I will be going into more detail of how this movie really brought to light these key issues.
There was one symbol in the story that stood out especially in my mind and that was the stripper. She was a tall blonde-haired woman with a tattoo of the American flag on her stomach. I think the stripper symbolized the perfect American white woman, something a black man can strive for all his life to obtain, but would never receive. This was a symbol of the many things that a white man could have whereas a black man could not.
Symbolism was one of the most common and effective figurative languages that were used in the novel. Symbolism gave Ellison the freedom to add double levels of meanings to his work: a literal one that was straight forward and a symbolic one whose meaning was far profounder than the literal one. For example, the quote “live with your head in the lion’s mouth” is a symbol. While one might not notice the symbol, the lion symbolizes the wealthy white supremacists and the head symbolizes the blacks. However, a symbol’s interpretation differs from one individual to another, depending on the understanding or familiarity of the context. The theme of this story, which was blindness, identity and supremacy, was greatly emphasized by Ellison’s use of figurative language, especially symbols. In the story, Ralph Ellison uses the blindfold as a symbol of oppression as well as blacks’ struggle for equality and an ironic symbol of individuality and insight.
In my opinion, Ellison 's most blatant form of symbolism is the battle royal itself. "In the period before the Civil War, these contests often involved slaves fighting bare fisted (and sometimes blindfolded) at boxing matches. Today, this form of combat is a staple of professional wrestling, but at the time this story was written, the battle royal was relegated to back rooms and more clandestine functions and almost always involved African Americans fighting in front of a white audience." The battle is symbolic of the fight for social equality and freedom. Also, before the fight begins, the narrator sees the stripper that is being made to dance for the men. The stripper is another symbol of inequality in that time period. Women as well as blacks were believed to be inferior to men in all aspects of life besides child bearing. The woman is objectified by the white men and treated less than human, just as the African American boys were. Furthermore, Ellison describes a tattoo the woman has on her stomach, a small American flag. This is further evidence of symbolism. The tattoo symbolizes the freedom and equality the black men desired in that time. The symbolism illustrated by Ellison further addresses the lack of social equality faced by the African
...ith money on the floor and tell the blacks to get the money. The blacks dive on the rug, only to find that it is electrified. The whites push the blacks onto the rug so that the whites can laugh at the black people’s pain and suffering. This demonstrates the stereotype of whites in charge of blacks and blacks being submissive to the whites. The white people are forcing the blacks to do something for the whites’ entertainment. The narrator wants to overcome these stereotypes and have his own individual identity.
The story clearly illustrates that when one thinks of their ideal lifestyle they mainly rely on their personal experience which often results in deception. The theme is conveyed by literary devices such as setting, symbolism and iconic foreshadowing. The abolition of slavery was one step forward but there are still several more steps to be made. Steps that protect everyone from human trafficking and exploitation. Most importantly, racism is something that needs to stop, as well as providing equal opportunity to all without discrimination.

The tone of this implies that the blacks were not entitled to most of the ‘good’ things being white could bring them and that they weren’t really good enough for them. The boys then compete in the Battle Royal [Ralph Ellison Battle Royal, 2003]. This classic example of symbolism shows the fight African Americans have been putting up against an harsh system over time and how it was necessary to continue and have courage even when hope diminished. This may perhaps also represent in some small part the extent to which a united community’s harmony may be disrupted and damaged. Afte...
Welty tells the story with “some dreams and harassments and a small triumph or two, some jolts to [Phoenix’s] pride, some flights of fancy to console her, one or two encounters to scare her, a moment that gave her cause to be ashamed, a moment to dance and preen…” (quoted in Moberly, 109). The early harassments evoke symbols of slavery such as coming through the “dark pine shadows” in slave garb, “dark striped dress…an equally long apron of bleached sugar sacks…all neat and tidy” (Roberts, 95). The “chains about my feet” and the uphill climb is descriptive of literally being a slave in chains. Being caught in the “pretty green bush” (Rogers, 96) that turns out to be a thorn bush is a figurative hard worn path to equal rights, with unseen snags and pitfalls. “Purple stalks” (Rogers, 96) and the buzzard and through the “old cotton” (Rogers, 96) represents the mourning of the African American people,...
Racism is often considered a thing of the past, with its manifestation rarely being acknowledged in the United States today. Race: The Power of an Illusion, is a documentary that addresses the legacy of racism through its significance in the past, and its presence in society today. To understand racism, it is vital to understand the concept of race. Race is a social invention, not a biological truth. This can be observed through the varying classifications of race in different cultures and time periods. For instance, in the United States, race has long been distinguished by skin color. In nineteenth century China, however, race was determined by the amount of body hair an individual had. Someone with a large amount of facial hair, for example,
Symbolism helps portray what whites think of slaves. According to the quote, whites or slave owners define blacks’ skin as an experience in a jungle. A jungle represents danger or even mystery. A jungle is filled with surprises and one may not know what to expect. Specifically in this novel, white people created this scenario to describe
The first major symbol in this story is the battle royal itself. The battle royal symbolizes the struggle for equality in the black community. The fight shows how the black Americans try to overcome the brutal treatment and the fear that comes from the violence of segregation and slavery. When the narrator is in the elevator with the other fighters, he thinks that he has the option in participating in the battle, but in reality he has no choice. This event introduced another theme of a reward that cannot be attained. This battle is also a representation of how the white men feel dominant and feel pleasure in keeping the black men fearful of them. In addition to the white men’s sense of dominance over the black men, this event is also pointed towards black society when the narrat...
Multiple examples of the outsiders are revealed at this point of the short story in which the battle royal takes place. The white naked woman who is dancing and has the flag tattoo is very symbolic. She does not want to dance for the men, but she must because she is too controlled by the white men hosting the battle royal. Even though she is white because she is a woman is still considered a minority. She and black men who are about to fight in the arena are both looked at as if they were worthless. This highlights that it was not just black people who did not have full human rights in the 1950’s, but also women. White male considered themselves superior the both African Americans and woman and for that had to be treated with respect at all times. While the naked white woman is dancing, the black men are staring over her beauty and the tattoo of the American flag on her thigh. This makes a very good point that the black people just want equality and freedom, but at the same time were confused and afraid by it. It is easy to comprehend this when the narrator says: “I wanted at one and the same time to run from the room, to sink through the floor or to go to her and cover her from my eyes and the eyes of the others with my body; to feel the soft thighs, to caress her, to destroy her,
Racism is based on the belief that one’s culture is superior to that of others, and this racial superiority provides justification for discrimination. Racism begins with categorising by race, and therefore stereotyping particular cultures. A simple definition of prejudice given by St Thomas Aquinas states prejudice as “thinking ill of others without sufficient cause” (1. pg 21). Racism is a major issue in today’s society, affecting a large number of the world’s population and causing political and social turmoil. To evaluate the true meaning, effects and views concerning racism in today’s world, a number of literature sources were researched including novel, films, short stories, poetry, song lyrics, textbooks and magazine articles.
