Racism is often considered a thing of the past, with its manifestation rarely being acknowledged in the United States today. Race: The Power of an Illusion, is a documentary that addresses the legacy of racism through its significance in the past, and its presence in society today. To understand racism, it is vital to understand the concept of race. Race is a social invention, not a biological truth. Created by a white man living in a society that had power to enforce his ideas, this model laid the foundation for racism, or the notion that one race is superior to another (Croteau & Hoynes, 2013). The United States is a racialized society, with racism deeply embedded into its history. The most renowned display of racism in the United States is the enslavement of Africans by white people. This is one of the many instances that highlights the government’s implementation of institutional racism, which has been experienced by people of many different races. In this documentary, American citizenship, the Federal Housing Administration, and real estate appear to be the focal portrayals of institutional racism. For hundreds of years, being white was essential to gaining American citizenship. In 1922, Ozawa, a Japanese businessman attempted to gain citizenship. However, the Supreme Court denied his request, stating that he was scientifically classified as Mongolian, not white. Three months later, a South Asian man, Thind, proved to the Court that he was white because he was scientifically classified as Caucasian, and therefore …show more content…
For instance, the Asian American population has, on average, the highest level of education and the highest income among all races. Due to this, the racial discrimination this group had to endure throughout history is overlooked. Nevertheless, the manifestation of this inequality can be observed by the Asian communities still present in the United States, such as Chinatown in San Francisco. These communities appeared after white people brutally attacked and killed Asians because they felt the Asians were stealing their jobs and lowering their wages, driving Asians out of cities and forcing them to rely on each other and their own businesses for survival (Croteau & Hoynes, 2013). In addition, since Asians were not considered qualified for American citizenship throughout most of history, they are often still considered foreigners today. Another example of inequality today can be seen through real estate and the wealth gap between whites and minority groups. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 ended the discrimination against non-whites in the housing industry, but racial inequality still remains. When white neighborhoods began to integrate non-whites, white people sold their homes after their realtors instilled the fear of their homes decreasing in value. Realtors bought white homes for less than they were worth, and sold them to non-whites at inflated rates, a process known as “block-busting”.
Race-thinking: what is it? Isn’t the world past the issue of race? Do races even exist and if so, what does it mean to have a racial identity? Is colorblindness possible and how important is it? These are the questions Paul Taylor addresses in the book “Race: A Philosophical Introduction”. Paul Taylor is a self-proclaimed “radical constructionist” who will maintain that race is very real in our world and in the United States as a whole (p. 80). Taylor takes care to ensure he addresses the real needs concerning racial dynamics in the U.S., referencing historical events, prevailing policy affairs, and even pop culture to explain that everyone capable of forming opinions ought to have some sort of grasp of the concept of race-thinking. As Taylor will analyze, race and race-thinking “has shaped and continues to shape private interactions as well as the largest political choices” (p. 8). In other words, race-thinking encompasses everything we do and every interaction we have. In this paper I will attempt to interpret and expound Taylor’s views and definitions of race, concepts associated with race, and input my own interpretations as they are appropriate.
The last chapter of the text varies depending on which edition is read. After buying the second edition I was able to acquire a copy of the first. The last chapters were an interesting correlation to the periods in which they were published, though they are both similar. After the 2008 election, Taylor rewrote the last chapter of the text to reflect the new conversation brought about with the election of our first black president. In the first edition, chapter six undertakes how race affects the increasingly prevalent topic of immigration and globalization in the United States (among various other things). Taylor stresses the importance of defining immigration administration as a racial structure, regardless of the insistence of supporters that they are simply enforcing laws. He makes his point by explaining that the common, go-to assertions and concepts about what qualifies as American (and what makes our country what we believe it to be) come from customs that were created “in the fires of classical racialism” (p. 195). This is particularly true with the unspoken, yet routine supposition that America is a country made for, and accommodating to, the white man. This understanding dates back to the time the first European settlers came to America and has been unwavering ever since. Taylor cites examples including the United States prison system and it’s radically uneven population. It seems strikingly obvious that there are a disproportionate amount of minorities, begging a discussion about the supposedly unpartisan nature of our laws and criminal codes. There is also mention of the consistent U.S. intervention in Haiti; all but eliminating it’s capability to be self-sufficient.
In the film “Race the Power of illusion” the actual genetics of what makes us different are attempted to be finally put on paper, only to find out that our exterior features do not correlate people together due to similarities and that those who may look completely different could actually be more similar than previously assumed, completely eradicating this idea of separate races. Race: The Power of an Illusion was an interesting 3 part film. After watching this, it made me questioned if race was really an illusion or not. It is absolutely taboo to think that the one thing that separates people the most may be a myth in itself. “We can 't find any genetic markers that are in everybody of a particular race and in nobody of some other race. We can 't find any genetic markers that define race.” (Adelman and Herbes Sommers 2003). Racism is something created in the U.S made to create supremacy for the creator. Racism is not just the way someone thinks, it is something that has is manifested in our society to separate us and can be traced to our everyday activities.
In society, race clearly affects one’s life chances. These are the chances of getting opportunities and gaining experience for progression. The social construction of race is based on privileges and availability of resources. Looking at society and the formation of race in a historical context, whites have always held some sort of delusional belief of a “white-skin privilege.” This advantage grants whites an advantage in society whether one desires it or not. This notion is often commonly referred to as reality.
Through research of DNA samples, scientists have been able to declare that race is not biologically constructed due to the similarities between human genes. Nevertheless, in reality, people still emphasized on biological aspects such as skin color, or hair texture to categorize others into different races. This in turn, denied the true identity of race, which it is culturally constructed. Ethnicity, by definition is also culturally constructed, therefore it greatly resemble race. There is no real clear line to distinct the two.
Social Construction Race Race has been one of the most outstanding events in the United States all the way from the 1500s up until now. The concept of race has been socially constructed in a way that is broad and difficult to understand. Social construction can be defined as the set of rules determined by society’s urges and trends. The rules created by society play a huge role in racialization, as the U.S. creates laws to separate the English or whites from the nonwhites. Europeans, Indigenous People, and Africans were all racialized and victimized for various reasons.
One day while watching the history channel I noticed that the main focus of the history was either on the evolved development of science or the Caucasian race. In that moment I asked myself, what did I know about my own history besides slavery and all the historic events after that? I became upset with the fact that I came up with nothing on the history on African Americans before slavery. In my 21 years of life I have took a total of 12 history classes and none them talked about African American history before slavery. Once I did research on African American history from articles, to books, and to documentaries I wondered why none of this was taught to students or shared with the world. I would to explain and describe a theory called “political whiteness” and gave details on why I believe that it is a big part of why African Americans don’t know their own history.
Race, in the common understanding, draws upon differences not only of skin color and physical attributes but also of language, nationality, and religion. Race categories are often used as ethnic intensifiers, with the aim of justifying the exploitation of one group by another. Race is an idea that has become so fixed in American society that there is no room for open-mindedness when challenging the idea of racial categories. Over the years there has been a drastic change with the way the term "race" is used by scientists. Essentially, there is a major difference between the biological and sociological views of race.
Scientific racism, a concept created to enact racial classification during the new world, is purely based on instilling a certain ideology that places the Aryan people above everyone else, hence allowing a dictation of who is right and wrong within society. These pseudoscientists would even remark that society should not fear the inferior race’s death because their lives are not equal in value. Scientific ideas about race may have died off during the collapse of the Nazis in Germany, however, the basic ideology of whites having a natural superior over dark skinned people have never gone away and are still present in the minds of many individuals today. Furthermore, the history of science used to promote a racist doctrines have made racism a stronger ideology, though it is non-existent in the realm of modern science, the mark it has left in society is undeniably painful and perilous. Even though, racism back up by science has had long lasting effects that continue to influence the minds of many, some people may think that the substantial gains in the last 100 years by minorities are clearly indications of racism being
The concept of race is an ancient construction through which a single society models all of mankind around the ideal man. This idealism evolved from prejudice and ignorance of another culture and the inability to view another human as equal. The establishment of race and racism can be seen from as early as the Middle Ages through the present. Soniah Shah says that “laws excluding Chinese from becoming citizens, owning property, marrying, or attending public schools with whites were enacted in the mid- to late-1800s.” Through disenfranchisement, discrimination, and subjugation, asian citizens denied same rights as whites. Back then, racism was much more normative, and it wasn’t seen as unnatural for a white man to treat an asian man as inferior. Today, however, Asians are upheld as the model minority.Yet, this is a myth, as it is not true for all of them. The overall earnings of asians vs whites is based upon statistical averages, which means that wealthy business owners are lumped in with impoverished immigrants.
