Silent Generation Those born before 1943 are referred as silent generations or veterans. They are also called traditionalist. The people of this generation grew up during World War II and great depression era where they were the part of the fight or were the children at that time. Patriotism, hard work, team effort and dedication defines this generation. They are also the first true innovators of many vaccines for deadly disease like tetanus, polio, tuberculosis etc. Some calls them as the wealthiest generation .In today’s world, silent generation are majority who are retired and mostly seen during the time of voting. Social issues: During the World War II there were so much disruptions that the values of this generation was greatly affected by this. World War II was happening as the 1950’s were happening and it soon drew to a close. This brought more men home from the army and thus led to the “Baby boom.” The baby boom was started as part of a security aspect for if there was another war there would still be a child to carry on the name. However, many men from the army just missed their wives and decided to have a few kids. This was a big impact on the 1960’s because those youths involved in the baby boom were starting to become adolescents and young adults as the 1960’s counterculture ideas started. Another aspect of this baby boom was that they didn’t really recognize the hard work that their father had to endure to provide them with a good life. The Baby Boomers were called into the Vietnam War and expected to follow in their father’s heroic footsteps; but unlike their father’s generation they failed to live up to the expectations. The Baby Boomers rebelled against the state and popular culture, developing flower power, free love, and equality. The Vietnam War conflicted with many of the generation’s values, resulting in internal conflict with many of the nation’s youth. Some men joined the military to fight, while other dodged the draft, creating conflict within a generation. Overall, the Baby Boomer generation symbolized individuality, dishonor, injustice, failure, and wasteful sacrifice.
The generation of women, who were born between 1946 and 1964 or the post WWII era, are commonly referred to as the ‘Boomer Women.’ In fact the whole generation of babies born in that period was known as the Boomer Generation. People returning from the war were facilitated to have a home and build up families and this consequently led to the Baby Boom.
The beginning of this generation marked the economic growth and an expansion of the middle class post WWII. Families could afford to own houses, cars, and newfangled appliances because of the GI Bill and booming industry. Children were afforded luxuries their parents could have only dreamed of. Families could not only provide a comfortable middle class lifestyle for their Baby Boomer children, but also save their money and send their children to college. As a result, Baby Boomers were more educated than their mothers and fathers, and were often first generation college graduates. They were raised with values that reflected their Traditionalists parents’ values: money equals security, work hard equals success, and loyalty to employers were all important qualities (Money et al., 2014). As nurses, Baby Boomers are very committed to the organization, a trait enforced by their parents. They are also strong willed, competitive, and tend to challenge authority, perhaps a result from the political and civil rights turmoil they were raised in (both from the Cold War and the Vietnam War). They want to be valued and noticed by their employers, and strive for promotions and job opportunities because these are characteristics that their parents instilled in them. In finding that generation Y yields almost equal numbers of intrinsic and extrinsically motivated people, we can confidently conclude that generation Y should not be stereotyped as being mostly one or the other. Accepting that this generation of workers encompasses a plethora of behavioural characteristics and can be motivated by different means, managers should be able to affectively create a work environment that allows for individuals of different motivational tendencies to work together and successfully accomplish work tasks.
They have idealistic tendencies and are extremely willing to sacrifice personal time in order to achieve success in the workplace. Even though Baby Boomers are typically seen as micromanagers, they are good at building collaborative relationships with their coworkers and networking. Many Baby Boomers feel that their life’s purpose is to work hard, respect the chain of authority and hierarchy in the workplace. This is due to the fact that Baby Boomers were brought up in a work atmosphere where the chain of command was always respected (Kapoor, Solomon, 2011). Baby Boomers also work very hard for promotions and believe in sacrificing personal for the sake of being successful; they started the ‘workaholic’ trend and believe in paying their dues and step-by-step promotion that comes with age and time worked at a company. They also like teamwork, collaboration, group decision-making and believe in loyalty toward their employers (Tolbize, 2008).
