Nneora Favor Ezeanya Principles of Sociology Writing Assignment 1 Due February 19, 2018 Having read my sociology textbook, listened to my sociology Professor lecture, and heard general views from my mates in class, norms to me are the ways of life expressed daily by a group of people in a given space. For example; a norm in my birth country, Nigeria, is to show a sign of respect when a younger person meets an elderly person especially in a rural setting. This could be; kneeling for the ladies and prostrating for the guys. Another way of showing respect is not calling older adults by their first name and putting appropriate titles when speaking with them. Having travelled abroad to further my education, I realized it was normal here for a …show more content…
A positive sanction could be a smile, a reward such as awards and recognition. It could be a positive comment showing one's support and encouragement. Negative sanctions on the other hand are negative reactions that people express when an individual has not done well or has done something considered bad within the culture. Negative sanctions could be; being reprimanded by one's parents or people around them, a gesture showing disapproval, comments showing anger, or disappointment. In institutions, a negative sanction to a student who has done wrong could be to withdraw the student from the school or to suspend such a …show more content…
For example, in terms of the value communication, being able to find a person whom you must have lost contact with and being able to communicate with them wherever they may be in the world on Facebook shows how these value is expressed. The value of Enterprise or business connection, is also expressed when people use their page or timeline as a means of advertising their enterprise or any business they might own or be a part of and being able to share videos or workshops, and links related to their business. This provides an avenue for other people to see, reach out and make connections if interested in participating in that kind of business. Facebook is a common social media platform where one can go on and know the things happening around them and, in the world, generally. People broadcast news or information they have heard and feel the need to share with other people. This expresses the value of being able to connect with the world wherever you are without having a television and cable. It is also a norm for people to constantly update their profile picture, profile information that sometimes shows achievements educationally, marital status, pictures also showing birthday celebrations, weddings and so on. People are able to see this and congratulate, cheer, and write lovely words to them. People also feel free to post whatever they want which
6. Norms - Norms are 1. a description of the frequency at which a particular score occurs, which allows scores to be compared statistically. and 2. a learned, socially based rule that prescribes what people should or should not do in various situations.
A norm is a group-held belief about how followers should perform in a given environment.[1] Sociologists describe norms as informal identifications that administer society’s performances, while psychologists have adopted a more general classification, recognizing smaller group divisions, like a team or an office, may also endorse norms detached or in addition to cultural or societal expectations. [2] Norms running counter to the activities of the primary society or culture may be conducted and retained within small subgroups of society. [3] For example, Crandall (1988) noted that certain groups like cheerleading squads, dance troupes, sports teams, and sororities have a rate of bulimia, a publicly recognized life-threatening disease that is much higher than society as a whole. Social norms have a way of maintaining order and organizing groups. [4]
Social norms are the implicit or explicit rules a group has for the acceptable behaviors, values, and beliefs of its members. Implicit social norms are introduced to us at a very early age, and exert a powerful influence on our behavior into adulthood. Our culture is ruled by social norms. In many situations, people 's perception of these norms have a big influence on their behavior. Implicit social norms are not openly stated, but found out when disobeyed. Implicit rules are rules we conform to as a society, and generally these rules make living together more comfortable. Social norms are important because they define the nature of a group, clarify relationships among members, and express values. They are also important because they create cohesion within the society, and members of that society are very aware when such norms are violated. Social norms are often strictly enforced and offenders are often disliked for their conduct. Also, some norms are more strictly held to in certain situations than in
Reflecting back on Joel Stein’s view that Facebook is just a place for self-branding, it is evident that this is false. Facebook is a place where someone can rhetorically analyze someone else and find out who they exactly are. Although people can post anything they want others to see, this is true off the screen as well. When people first meet, they only show the other person what they want them to see. Someone who uses Facebook more than someone who does not will have more of a relationship with the audience due to a stronger ethos, pathos and logos.
Society teaches us as individuals how to behave, interact, and even think. There are several components to creating norms in society. Some of these are called values, norms, sanctions, folkways, mores, and taboos (Henslin, 49-55). Each of these is a crucial part to creating what we live and
Lets start by understanding that cultures are a melting pot of people’s beliefs, language, behaviors, values, material objects, and norms. Norms are written and non-written “expectations of behavior” that govern a certain location, place, or culture (26). These norms also vary from culture to culture meaning what is a norm in the U.S may not be a norm in India. For example, a norm in America would be tipping a waiter after a meal. Another would be acknowledging someone as you walk past him or her, typically done at work or in a public place. In all, norms are folkways, mores, taboos, and written laws that are an established standard of one’s behavior.
When you were a kid, your parents most likely told you things like “hold the door open for the person behind you” or “chew with your mouth closed”. Have you ever wondered why you had to do these things? Phrases like these are considered to be social norms. Norms are rules or behaviors that are found acceptable by a society. People should be aware of the norms within their society because there are often sanctions associated with them. If someone follows a norm, they are likely to receive a positive sanction, such as a compliment or a smile. If someone breaks a norm, they could receive a frown or be publicly humiliated. These norms vary among different societies and cultures and can lead to conflict when these different
Social norms refer to the way that members of a society are expected to act and behave. These norms provide structure and conformity for individuals within a society. They also provide a sense of “normalcy” amongst individuals within a society. In a society, “we tend to follow our own cultural norms without questioning them, because we regard them as the ‘norm’.” (Henslin,2012). To intentionally break a cultural norm, takes some thought and effort to consciously go against our inbred “culture within us.” When pondering about social norms that I could break and the reactions of others, I began brainstorming various social norms. One in particular norm came to mind. In American society there is a social norm that if you use the drive thru window
A Norm is something that is usual, typical, or standard. Therefore, a social norm would be an acceptable behavior that is standard in a social setting, community, or culture. For instance, a social norm is stopping at a red light, not picking your nose in public, and chewing with your mouth closed. These behaviors would be frowned upon if violated by others around you. Social norms, or behaviors vary, for example slurping in Hong Kong and Japan would demonstrate the enjoyment of your meal. If an American were to sit down at a restaurant and slurp their food, they would be making a scene and it would be considered rude and a disturbance.
Puja Mondal shared an article entitled “Social Norms: Meaning, Types and Functions of Socio Norms in Sociology” to the Your Article Library website. The article classifies norms into various different categories. There are prescriptive, proscriptive, formal, and informal types of norms. Also, the article categorizes norms relative to their importance to society (Mondal). Prescriptive norms are positive and indicate how certain people should behave in certain situations. Proscriptive norms instruct people to avoid certain activities. Formal norms are typically written down and include rules for punishment for those who violate. Informal norms are general knowledge and are not recorded. A law authorized by the government is an example of a formal norm. Informal norms include rules such as how certain people should dress or what certain people should look like. Another group of social norms that are commonly used throughout the world are the social norms regarding public behavior. These include shaking hands when one meets another person, having direct eye contact when speaking with another person, consuming alcohol in moderation, and saying please and thank you. There are also social norms regarding one’s personal behavior. These include showering or bathing, brushing hair, brushing teeth, and offering food or
Norms are a part of everyday life. Without norms the world would be in total chaos. Norms by definition are rules of behavior shared by members of a society and rooted in the value system. ( ) Norms are held at a high standard in a society and are valued by its members. Norms vary from society to society. What is considered normal in one society may not be acceptable in another society. Norms are a societies way of living if a member of society breaks that norm they may be looked at as strange or even penalized depending on what kind of norm is broken. Norms are broken into three categories which are folkways, mores, and laws. Folkways are customs or desirable behaviors that are not strictly enforced. Violating a folkway is not criminal, but violating a folkway may have you looked at as weird. Mores are the strongest form of norms they have great moral significance in a society. Violating a more is considered immoral or borderline criminal. The strongest form of mores are taboos which are unthinkable action within a society. Laws are the third category of norms that a...

In society there are unwritten rules or norms that are hardly noticeable, unless we take a step back to notice it. Norms are, “the basic rules of society that help us know what is and is not appropriate to do in any situation” (12). In society we have a variety of norms such as mowing the lawn, saying “please” and “thank you”, or asking a person’s permission to use their bathroom. There are still many more norms that can be added to the list and I never realized how many norms are in effect until I started thinking about them. We all just grow up knowing that these behaviors where the right behaviors to obey and abide by.
A person’s life is reflected on Facebook. Because so much of someone’s life is on Facebook, anyone can have a sense of what is going on in their life. This is beneficial for parents away from their children in college or just away from the nest. A visual image is more attractive than reading a lengthy blog about an individual's day. With Facebook someone can post albums at a time and can share a special event that just recently occurred. Instant messaging has improved the speed that users can communicate with each other. If they see that their friend is online all that needs to be done is a message with the word “Hey.” Facebook allows for users to connect with friends time zones away.
A norm is “an accepted standard for how people should behave that is usually unwritten and learned unconsciously through socialization”. Every society in the entire world has norms. An example of these norms are “the expectation that children should follow their parents’ advice, that people standing in line should be orderly, and that an individual should accept an offer of a handshake when meeting someone for the first time”. These are things that everybody in this world does every single day.
