For a project in the Sociology B1 class, I was required to observe and commit a social norm violation. The purpose of this project was to observe what today 's society considers "normal" and how it reacts to a violation of "normal" behavior. To further explain social norms, it is the expectation of what is "right" behavior according to society (Henslin, 49). I violated a social norm by dressing up as a movie character and playing a tin whistle in public. Society teaches us as individuals how to behave, interact, and even think. There are several components to creating norms in society. Some of these are called values, norms, sanctions, folkways, mores, and taboos (Henslin, 49-55). Each of these is a crucial part to creating what we live and …show more content…
Values vary between different societies; for example a society of musicians would value an individual 's knowledge and skill in music, whereas a society of gamers would value high scores and consoles. Values, according to sage journals, are needed as a preliminary means of orientation (sagejournals.com). Values leads into our second component, norms. Norms describe expectations of people to conform and express values the "right" way, according to that society (Alspemeier). Norms are also not meant to be violated, and if they are then those who violated them are considered "weird" or "unusual". These reactions are what is known as a sanction, and there are two types of sanctions; good sanctions and bad sanctions. A good or positive sanction expresses approval for following a norm. An example of this would be a teacher rewarding children for sitting quietly during class. A negative sanction is the disapproval for breaking a social norm. I received negative sanctions in the form of stares and glances when I violated a social norm. These components of society are a powerful way to ingrain certain behavior from large amounts of …show more content…
In Abercrombie and Fitch, I noticed that the majority of employees and customers were around my age. I received snide and even dirty looks for my behavior and appearance. However when I entered Macy 's, the majority of employees and customers were older and seemed to be more enthusiastic about my playing and appearance. And lastly, I entered Hot Topic who 's employees were around their 20 's and had a diverse age range of customers. No one seemed to take notice of me; I received neither looks nor cheers, the people here simply did not
In the world we live in today, deviance happens to play an integral role in within the societies that scatter our globe, whether we like it or not. Deviance describes actions or behaviors that violate the social norms of our society. These behaviors can violate formally enacted rules, such as laws that are put into place by government, as well as the informal type of “guidelines” that various cultures have informally established and shaped for themselves. As one may come to understand, norms are essentially expectations that are standard to a certain culture. These norms gently guide people in a society in “what to do,” and “what not to do,” in compliance with their societies' norms. With this said, it is important to keep in mind that social norms differ from culture to culture. One act that may be considered deviant in a particular society, may be generally accepted in another. Three main sociological theories of deviance include the cultural transmission theory (also known as the differential association theory), the labeling theory, and the control theory.
Value is someone’s moral standard of right and wrong, and is based off of one’s motivations or aspirations of life. Common values include loyalty, patriotism, and trust.
Values -Everyone has them. Where do those values come from? In literature, one can find the answer to that question by taking a close look at characters and their values. They can be compatible to real life experiences. Look at the two stories, "Abuela Invents the Zero" by Judith Ortiz Cofer, and Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. The main characters in the stories are Constancia from "Abuela Invents the Zero" and the Four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth from Little Women. These two stories demonstrate how Experiences can shape, and change values.
There are many things that influence our behavior from internal influences to social norms. Social norms are implicit or explicit rules that govern how we behave in society (Maluso, class notes). Social norms influence our behavior more than any of us realize but we all notice when a norm has been broken. Breaking a social norm is not an easy task and often leads us feeling uncomfortable whether we broke the norm ourselves or witnessed someone else breaking it. Sometimes however, you just have to break a norm to see what happens.
What is Sociology, and what is the relationship with social norms? “Sociology is the scientific study of society and human behavior” (Henslin, 2015, pg. 4). Norms are “expectations of ‘right’ behavior” (Henslin, 2015, pg. 49). The relationship of the two would be that society upholds itself following the norms in our everyday life. If we follow he norms of society we could be given sanctions, there are positive sanctions and negative sanctions. For instance, I’ve observed norm violations that in the most part they are given negative sanctions. Later in this paper you will be given the different scenarios of social norm violations that I’ve experienced.
From what I understand, the norm is not something as the constitution, but more like the social morality. This is easier to do; I don’t need to try to do something weird because I already had many experiences like that. I’m sure many people have done something anybody think that was normal, however it turns out something so stupid that makes them embarrassed a lot every time they recall about it. With my personality, I have no sense for what people call normal, for instance, about fashion, entertainment or something like that, I means something about the way of life of the modern young people. The unchangeable mistake I always have whenever I hang out with my friend every time in a while is my sense in fashion. I usually just wear the pants I used to go to school or go out to do something, and wear a shirt inside and a jacket outside if I feel cold; I am pretty sensitive to the cold even in the summer. So the reaction I always received from my friend is a good laugh from them. To tell the truth, I have so used to it to the extent I don’t even feel trouble by it anymore for it is just...
Social norm is a way of dressing, talking, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors. Most people in this world define themselves through their clothing, hairstyles, and experiences. Each person has a different behavior, which is due to the differences in traditions, cultures, education and experiences. The environment and social norms directly affect the person’s behavior. The way we behave is not right or wrong, but only what our society allows us to. In our society, we have a number of society norms that we accept. For example, the way we should behave in public, it is important for us to move away from strangers, and respect our elders. The family is one of the first avenues by which children begin to form their understanding of social norms. Parents are constantly teaching their children what is appropriate and what is not appropriate.
Dana Williams, in an article entitled “Why revolution ain’t easy: violating norms, re-socializing society,” describes how social norms are spread. She explains, “Norms are transmitted through a process of socialization, by which every member of society is subtly trained to appreciate and follow these norms” (167). Social norms are transferred from person to person, through socialization. As people speak with one another, these norms are spread throughout a population. People learn of norms through other people. Social norms are not simply written down, uploaded, and stored in a file for people to access whenever necessary. Through socialization, every member of society learns of social norms. Every member is skillfully trained to value and live by these norms. Over time, social norms have just became a part of life. People have accepted these rules set forth by society and have learned to follow them. This process of learning social norms can be compared to the school system. At one point in time, there were the first teachers of all time, who came up with lessons and the school routine. Eventually, the students these teachers taught became the teachers. Generation after generation, former students become teachers. Just like this, social norms are passed down from generation to generation. Children learn from their parents, who learned from their parents, and so on. Social norms continue to be passed from person to

Our society has programmed us in such a way that we create values that pertain to our unique culture and social life. Norm violations sometimes make people feel uncomfortable, ashamed or embarrassed whether they themselves are violating a norm or witnessing someone violate one. The reactions people have during committing a norm or viewing someone do so is what makes it a violation. The feelings and reactions themselves can be a type of sanction whether it is a positive sanction or negative sanction. Negative sanctions are described as, “expressions of approval given to people for upholding norms or expressions of disapproval for violating them” (Henslin, 2015, p.49).
Social norms refer to the way that members of a society are expected to act and behave. These norms provide structure and conformity for individuals within a society. They also provide a sense of “normalcy” amongst individuals within a society. In a society, “we tend to follow our own cultural norms without questioning them, because we regard them as the ‘norm’.” (Henslin,2012). To intentionally break a cultural norm, takes some thought and effort to consciously go against our inbred “culture within us.” When pondering about social norms that I could break and the reactions of others, I began brainstorming various social norms. One in particular norm came to mind. In American society there is a social norm that if you use the drive thru window
Every day of my life the sociology of “norms” is at work in my daily life. It works on a subconscious level, keeping me from acting “strange”. These norms are my guiding light to acting “normal” and fitting in with the societies that I am a part of, they tell me how to conduct myself and what my expectations of other’s behaviors should be.
Social norms affect how people fulfil multiple different things and how they act in various situations. Social norms and values differ from person to person. Whether that means one social norm is superior to one person than another. Groups have specific unwritten expectations about how people are suppose to act and treat others. Some of the unwritten rules of the social norms may obtain controversial actions and not every person is willing to both accept and follow the rules. Groups that focus on different things can have a set of expectations that are shared among the groups.
Social norms can be defined as a set of behaviors or conduct that are that being considered as wrong in a community. Different communities have got the various social norms examples; men not shaving beards, stealing and lying people normally avoid these behaviors due to fear of suffering from the repercussions.
The Values and Norms are affected by a certain number of factors inside the society such
